According to the New York Times, the upcoming Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder will be boycotted by "a coalition of disabilities groups" who object to what they say is "the movie’s open ridicule of the intellectually disabled."
The article continues:
A particular sore point has been the film's repeated use of the term "retard" in referring to a character, Simple Jack, who is played by Mr. Stiller in a subplot about an actor who chases an Oscar by portraying a mindless dolt. Mr. Shriver said that he had also begun to ask members of Congress for a resolution condemning what he called the movie’s “hate speech."
Have you ever refused to see a movie because you objected to the content?

No, not that I can recall...
1Puh-leez. I'm sure Mr. Shriver hasn't gone to Congress over certain depictions of minorities and women in other movies. I'm going to see the movie twice now!
2no - personally i haven't ever boycotted a movie - but i can understand when there are organizations who are against the message that's being portrayed. i hope that whatever happens with this movie that people realize that it's all in the name of fun and the intention isn't to make any group feel like they are being patronized in any way.
3yes, i boycotted the movie 'stomp the yard' because of its inappropriate use of the greek letters of an actual organization and because of its simplistic portrayal of black greek life. i also heard that some people are boycotting this movie because of robert downey jr.'s use of blackface. i don't think that i'm going to see this film.
4Isn't this supposed to be a satire--like making fun of Hollywood actors taking on certain roles just to win awards? Maybe I'm wrong or maybe it's just really unsuccessful satire, whatever the case may be, I won't see this movie because it looks absolutely stupid. I can't think of a time I've boycotted a movie based on its content.
5I boycotted Stomp The Yard b/c of the portrayal of the art of stepping. I'm all for innovation and creativity within a show but by what I saw in the commercial, I thought they went over the top. Then my girls who saw it talked me into seeing it (on dvd of course). By then they weren't getting my money so I gave in. It's not bad. I've made peace with that movie. Plus, Columbus Short is... wow. Lol.
6I boycotted something else but don't remember. It's been so long now, I don't even remember what movie. Lol. Other than that, it takes a lot to get me to see a movie in the theater anyway.
I heard the Council for the Humor Deficient and Irony Impaired boycott are boycotting this movie too.
Seriously, from what I understand, it's a satire making fun of Hollywood, not a film trying to get cheap laughs by making fun of disabled people.
7No, I really think openly boycotting films is ridiculous. How offensive can a movie really be?
8I boycotted the movie The Mexican years ago. I had family living there at the time and according to my cousin, the portrayal of Mexico was offensive. So I told her I would not see it. No harm really since it looked boring anyway.
9I also refuse to see anything with Tom Cruise and other actors I just plain don't like. What's the problem with not sitting through something you know that you'll hate by virtue of the actors in it?
That being said, I don't understand the boyocott of this movie. It's satire. I'm still deciding to see it because I know Tom Cruise has a minor role in it.
I "boycotted" the Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson and will probably not see another one of his movies again.
10There lots of movies I chose not to see - movies that insulted women or advocated violence - but I never called it a boycott. I think that movies can be pretty horribly offensive and I don't have a problem with a group calling for a boycott to attract attention to an insulting film. Irony and humor should be done intelligently to be effective, and perhaps calling a character 'retard' over and over doesn't hold to a high standard.
11I boycott and refuse to watch any movie with Angelina Jolie. I think she is a home wrecker and full of herself. The minute I see her face in a movie preview I scratch it off my list, no matter how interested I was.
12I guess I have never thought of it as Boycotting but there are many movies over the years that I have opted not to see b/c of the portrayal of women and relationships. I know that my NOT buying a ticket did not make any difference but why fill my head with things that just make me mad?
13I haven't ever boycotted a movie but I have walked out of movies before and the told friends the reason why and they boycotted. I don't appreciate any "satire" or "jokes" about mentally handicapped people or the use of the word "retard" or "retarded" in that context.
14I boycotted Fahrenheit 911. I will definitely be watching Tropic Thunder. It looks super funny.
The most "offensive" movies are usually the best IMO. I tend to watch independent films since they can fly under the radar easier than a typical hollywood movie.
15I refuse to watch Michael Moore's films. And I'm not a hardcore Republican by any means.
16I wouldnt go see a movie cause i didnt like an actor, or the plot sounded boring or stupid, but to get all politically correct is beyond ridiculous. Someone, somewhere is going to be offended over something, i dont worry about that, and neither should hollywood.
17I don't usually boycot movies but I tried to stay away from movies that feature actors i don't like. *cough* Tom Cruise * cough*
18I haven't boycotted a movie. Tropic Thunder looks freaking hilarious.
19Yes. Loads. I boycott for two reasons: 1) I don't agree with the subject matter and don't want to give approval with my money. 2) I don't want my money to go to an actor who will use it for a cause I disagree with.
I will no longer see Tom Cruise movies or Will Smith movies because my money will likely go to support Scientology. People say that my 6 bucks won't make a difference, but since people have gotten fed up with TC, his movies have started to tank and he's not making as much per film as he used to.
20I'm surprised the controversy is over the use of the "r-word" and not the RDJ in black face part of the whole thing. I thought for sure that would be the lightening rod.
As for boycotting...I've walked out of movies but only really out of boredom — so that's kind of a boycott against lameness?
21I don't go to see any movie that denigrates the image of African Americans.
22I boycott any movie with Jane Fonda.
23Mswender, may I ask why you boycotted Passion?
24If all films, especially comedies, had to be polticaly correct, it would be a sad, sad world.
25I saw a preview of this movie a couple of weeks ago, and it IS a satire and they are totally making fun of Hollywood and the things actors do to get awards like taking on the ugly roles, or the mentally handicapped roles, and even the "black-face" roles. They aren't making fun of ugly people, fat people, handicapped, or black people. They are making fun of themselves as actors.
I think it's ridiculous to boycott a movie that they haven't even seen. If they had, they would (hopefully) see the humor in it.
I thought the movie was hilarious, I haven't laughed so hard at a movie in ages and I am not usually a fan of the low-brow humor.
26I boycott anything, old or new, with Tom Cruise. His beliefs and comments regarding depression serve only to misinform the already generally un-or-ill-informed masses. Not all types of depression can be alleviated simply by the use of vitamins and therapy.
27I have boycotted movies before for their content. I can't think of many examples right now, but I do this all the time. I avoid movies like Beerfest that seem to revolve around objectifying women. I won't go see the new movie Hamlet 2 or something because it seems offensive to Christianity. The thing is, this is my personal decision to not see these movies. I like to think that if enough people like me don't give money to movies like this, people will get the point and stop making them. I don't think laws should be created to censor "hate speech" or whatever. It's a free country and I'd like it to stay that way. I find it really offensive when people say "that's retarded" or "that's gay", but I still think they have a right to express themselves and if that's how they choose to do it because they are ignorant or lack proper vocabulary skills, then they should be allowed to.
28I would never call it a boycott, but I have passed on movies because I didn't like the actor or the subject. I skipped Passion of the Christ because I personally found it offensive but I saw Apocolypto and enjoyed it. I can't see Tom Cruise movies any more becaus all I see is TC.
29I refused to see Fahrenheit 911 and Michael Moore's other films.
30I've never boycotted a movie. Most of the actors I like are in no way aligned with me politically or spritually but that doesn't keep me from watching their movies. I can't wait to see Tropic Thunder, looks hilarious!
31There's a big difference between boycotting a movie and choosing not to see one because you don't think it's your type of film. I've done that with plenty of movies. I've never boycotted one, though. I think filmmakers are entitled to freedom of speech just as much as anyone else, and to see such a furor over Tropic Thunder of all movies is, to be honest, a little bit surprising. I caught the film at an advanced screening and, while the humor is a bit raunchy (not gonna lie) it's hardly as offensive as these groups make it out to be. Not only does the film cover so many different groups and potentially touchy subjects, the point is that it's making fun at the industry that uses these groups and subjects for gain. It's a satire, guys, bottom line. And I, as a film junkie, loved it from the faux trailers at the beginning to the hilarious dance at the end (won't spoil it with any more details than that...)
32I boycotted Passion of the Christ because Christian propoganda is obnoxious. Also, all George Lucas films because the guy's a douchebag.
33I understand boycotting a film if it is truly offensive but this movie is more about satire. So, I don't think it is appropriate to boycott this one. I will say that the previews do look pretty funny. I've never boycotted anything myself but there are lots of movies that I just haven't seen for one reason or another.
34What is offensive about the Passion?
35I wouldn't say boycott, but I didn't think World Trade Center needed to be made into a movie quite yet and refused to watch it...People shouldn't be profiting from a work of fiction based loosely on such tragedy.
As far as tropic thunder I don't really get their point...its a comedy and meant to be just that, not taken seriously. If models said they were gonna boycott zoolander cause it depicted them as "less intelligent" I doubt anyone would listen.
36I boycott all movies with subject matter that is an insult to intellect and ones with terrible portrayals of women. I don't want to give most movies my money because Hollywood keeps on make asinine sequels and generally awful formulaic crap.
37I don't like to watch movies that objectify women. My guy doesn't watch any Tom Cruise movies. He's a psychology major and finds what Tom Cruise said to be offensive.
38No, I don't think I have ever boycotted a movie. I don't think the use of the term "retarded" is bad unless you are purposefully making fun of mentally handicapped people. Sometimes, retarded is used to call someone out for being stupid or idiotic, it is not mean to offend someone with real mental issues.
39Well I got flagged for use of the "r-word" but all I said was that I think it depends on what context the r-word is used. If it is purposefully used to make fun of mentally handicapped people, then of course it is not appropriate. But if it is used to denote someone who is acting in an idiotic manner, then I don't think it's a big problem. I hate how everything has to be "PC" nowadays.
I personally have never boycotted a movie over an issue like this. Usually I skip movie if I hate the actor, or if the movie doesn't interest me. I also refuse to see certain sequels if they replace one of the lead actors with another person and expect us not to notice (i.e. the newest Mummy film).
40I boycotted Woody Allen movies for a few years after he married his daughter (ok, stepdaughter).
41Great Sommelier - I think some people boycotted Passion of the Christ because they thought it was Anti-Semitic. I personally liked the movie...
42Glad I'm not the only one - I boycott anything Tom Cruise related. I refuse to give my money to that guy (and he's a bad actor anyway
).
43I boycott any and all movies that seem to have an anti American/liberal leaning. Hollywood will always be liberal but I don't have to spend my hard earned money to watch that crap. If I'm in the mood for that I'll just turn on CNN
44@Advah -- then you're missing out.
His cameo in Tropic Thunder is one of the
funniest things I've seen in a LONG time... he truly injects comedy back into Hollywood. Well, this whole movie does, really, but he's a big part of that. And Valkyrie's going to be one of
the best movies of 2009, I'm wagering.
45WTF, going to CONGRESS about this?? Please, those people need better things to do. I saw the previews of TT and I thought it looked hilarious. Don't know if I'll see it in theaters, but I'll def see it.
46Honestly, some people are SO sensitive.
Sooo...where are the angry ppl protesting over RDJ playing a white guy pretending to be a black guy? And I have to ask..was there a problem like this when The Ringer came out? I would have found that way more offensive. Its a movie ppl, get over it.
47What's wrong with Jane Fonda movies?
And I don't think Will Smith is a scientologist.
48All this guy is doing with his little boycott is giving the film more publicity and I'm sure it'll make way more money than if he'd just let it go.
I think boycotting films is a little ridiculous. If you don't like the subject matter or actors, then don't see it.
49Actually Angelfromlsu, Will Smith is infact a Scientologist. He has been known to pass out pamphlets about the "religion" when hes on the set of whatever movie hes making at the time.
