Hooray! There's one very happy So You Think You Can Dance contestant wandering the world right now, and I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the voters' choice. Then again, after a season like this, it was really anyone's game — so to find out the winner and talk about the finale, just read more.
It's Joshua! Our little semi-trained popper ("a poppah!" says Nigel) and ex-football player, who just got his braces off, who wowed us with his vertical leaps and his versatility is America's Favorite Dancer '08! And based on the season as a whole, I think it was definitely the right choice. I know Joshua disappointed some people in the finale, but over the course of the past couple of months, he rarely let anyone down. He's a humble guy who looked flabbergasted when Cat told him he'd won, and he may have just given me a reason to check out Step Up 3D.
In the runner-up spot: Twitch, who scooted past Courtney and Katee to be No. 2 for the season. Honestly, that surprised me; I figured the top two would be Katee and one of the guys. But Twitch was more likable, and he did have his best night in the finale, which is a good time to really turn things up a notch or two and pick up some extra votes. I would love to see inside their magical results and know how close the voting was. It wasn't much of a surprise that Courtney was first to go, but after that, anyone could have ended up on top — I just thought Katee would be closer.
Overall, the results show had a lot of fantastic moments (and, well, the Jonas Brothers); here were a few more things that stood out to me:
- So, where do you think that $50,000 prize for Katee came from? Was the top girl always going to get something (or top guy, if the winner was a girl)? Was it special for her? SYTYCD has tended in the past couple of years not to reveal what you actually get if you win — "You'll be crowned America's Favorite Dancer! And, uh, some other stuff!" — and so it wouldn't surprise me if it was planned the whole season. But it does seem odd for the third-place dancer to get money while the second-place dancer doesn't and call it a matter of gender. Why not just give prizes to the top guy and girl if that's what you want to do?
- Overall, I was pretty happy with the judges' choices for the encore numbers — which is no surprise given how many of them were in my personal top 10. The best of the night, by a mile, was Will and Katee's pas de deux, which I thought was even more brilliant and moving than the first time they performed it.
- Also, seeing both standout Nap/Tab routines ("Bleeding Love" and "No Air") on the same night was pretty interesting. I may be unpopular here, but I still give the edge to "No Air" — though that may be because I like the song just that much better.
- A favorite little moment: Kherington picking up Gev during the dancer introductions in the beginning. Others: Mary screeching "Who was bucker?" to Lil C, Adam Shankman getting all upset about his loss to Miley Cyrus's M&M Cru at the Teen Choice Awards ("We smoked her! But she was hosting the show!"), and the rest of the judging panel trying to imitate Lil C's flowery language (the show is "a prestigious museum that features the most immaculate portraits ever to be painted on the dance floor," etc.).
- I have a feeling that the popping battle lost a little something in the translation to TV, but from what I saw, I was definitely on Team Robert. You?
- It may be cheesy, but frankly, I loved seeing the judges dance. All Idol could get was Paula's music video; Nigel was up there tapping with 10-year-olds!
- I'd totally forgotten this until her highlight reel, but Courtney was in the bottom three the very first week. Way to rally!
- Did anyone else have Donnie Darko flashbacks upon seeing Wade's Cirque du Soleil number?
- OK, so here's another thing that may make me wildly unpopular, but: The Jonas Brothers. I don't get it. I really went in thinking "Oh, now I'll finally be able to understand what all the hype is about," and instead I was just really disappointed, especially by the two singing Jonases. The one who plays guitar can stay.
- I don't think I've ever seen a routine to "Five Guys Named Moe" that I don't like. But where was our number with the top five girls? That would have been fun.
- Seeing some of the top dancers from previous seasons was great, especially with the little video postcard they recorded. Has Hok really been on all four seasons in one way or another? Also noteworthy: Lauren has crazy hair extensions, and Sara is a backup dancer (and singer!) for Avril Lavigne.

So, that's our show. Were you satisfied with the winner? Surprised by anything in the finale? And are you buying tickets for the tour?

As a huge fan of the show I must say I am a bit upset that in the final wire it didn't come down to Josh and Katee. Don't get me wrong, I did like Twitch- but I liked Katee a heck of a lot more. I would have been thrilled if she took the show altogether as she is an amazing dancer. I believe both her and Josh were never in the bottom three though I could be wrong.
1I agree about those jonas brothers buzz!
2It was an awesome finale, this is why every spring I go crazy waiting for SYTYCD to start. This season was #1 in my book and I didn't think any season could ever top season 2 with Benji & Travis.
3I think this season set the bar high, especially for hip-hop,Joshua and Twitch were good at almost everything they threw at them.
I was really happy that Joshua and Twitch were the top two, even happier that Josh won.
I do think it was weird that Katee got $50,000 and Twitch got NOTHING, and he was second? Although on the flip side I was really happy for her.
I'm sad to see the show end for the season, in my opinion no other reality tv show compares, and WHO ELSE THINKS THAT CAT DEELY deserves an award for best host ever!!!
I forgot to add, does anyone else think that something was going on between Cat and Twitch? I know it's a stretch but...
4They really got me thinking that Twitch might actually win, but I think that Joshua really deserved it. I knew he looked different somehow last night, so I am glad you said he got his braces off! Good timing.
I loved seeing Twitch and Kherrington together again, but I thought for sure that they would do the contemporary routine to John Mayer's "Dreaming with a Broken Heart". Oh well!
Buzz -- I seriously thought the same thing about Donnie Darko. I even said something to my mom (who I was making watch the show for the first time). Love that movie, but that dance was just weird and out of place in a happy finale.
Otherwise I really liked the finale. Seeing the best routines over again was fun and they did show most of my favorites
.
5Ooo I also agree with Buzz about the Jonas Brothers. I am not 12, so perhaps that is why I do not understand why they are famous. I changed the channel while they were on.
6Loved your recap. Buzz! Totally agree about the Jonas Brothers--and about Danny Darko! Joshua is a deserving winner, but I would have been just as pleased if Katee had won. I was surprised she was third; and her prize money seems so odd, especially when #2 gets nothing, not even a really nice sendoff. Loved seeing Nigel dance, even if it was with 10 year olds (I'm a sucker for any tap number) and Mary was fun to watch as well. Overall, last night was a great celebration of dance. I'm already looking forward to Season 5!
7I agree CurlyWhirl--I LOVE Cat--for some reason this year she's just been making me laugh--I've never thought about her and Twitch though, but I am usually doing one million thing while the show is on!
I agree with everyone about the Jonas Bros--all I kept thinking was these poor kids will be washed up like the Hansons in a few years! They sounded like them to me--esp when they were trying to rap or whatever!
As for the results, I would have been happy with any of those four. I didn't love every routine the judges picked--I thought there were some FABULOUS ones that got left out for sure.
This is def. one of my favorite shows though--I will miss it!
8I put the Jonas Brothers on mute haha. I refuse to acknowledge that they're popular.
9the jonas brothers were so random! its a dance show! i dont understand them!
10but anyway, i absolutely loved that they got the judges to dance. probably the best parts of the night. i love the finales on SYTYCD.
Great show. I skipped the Jonas Brothers! Loved seeing Mary and Nygel dance. I had no idea Mary had those legs. I always wanted it to be Katie and Josh so I am happy. I started thinking maybe there was more than friendship between the two of them!
11my husband and i couldn't understand why three little girls were singing on a dancing show...i refuse to understand that mini-phenomenon!
but JOSHUA is the stuff! he and katie were the best dancers by far. and is it just me or shouldn't they get married and have little dancing babies! They are both fabulous!
12The show was amazing. (Minus the Jonas Brothers nonsense.) Loved seeing all the best numbers again.
13I also thought it was fun to catch up with some of the old contestants - especially to hear that they're doing such fun things. But was anyone else wondering where Sabra was? I thought her absence was a little weird...
Glad I PVR'd the show so I could quickly skip through the Jonas Brothers' performance. I don't understand the hype either.
Poor Twitch totally got the shaft for coming in 2nd: no prize $$, no video recap, and the flower guy definitely pulled him off the stage to the side. It seemed really rushed at the end. They could have at least talked to Twitch! Oh well.
Can't wait until the Canadian version starts next month! Woo hoo!!
14Do we know that Twitch was Second? Couldn't it be that they announced eliminations in random order, and Katee was second? You'd think they'd say that. Thinking out loud here.
I was very pleased that Joshua won. He's truly 'brilliant', as Nigel said on Wednesday. I've never really watched the show before this year, and I was so hooked, I'm sad to see it end. Can't we just continue with all the same dancers and just watch pretty routines for the next few weeks, until the fall-season stuff starts up. My nights will be so lonely....
15Joshua YEA!!! I love him. He totally deserved to win. =)
16And I don't get the Jonas Brothers either.... they're just not talented. Sorry.
But last nights show was great. Well, aside from the giant dancing bunnies. But other than that, great.
i actually really liked the rabbit routine. I just really heart bunnies. It most def reminded me of Donnie Darko!
17*I don't think Twitch was really second place. You notice that no one said "you are 4th place" "you are third place" and so on? I think Katee really got the second highest amount of votes, and that's why they gave her $50k, not for being the "top girl." They just announced it in an order that would highlight the Joshua/Twitch rivalry.
Let's all remember that Twitch took second place on The Wade Robson Project, so he didn't totally get shafted. He's got a lot of recognition and a lot of cred from making it to the finals of both dance shows, and there was clearly no love lost as he was the first person to be happy for Joshua, holding up his comrade's hand in victory.
*I think it was great to see the judges dance. Shows us exactly why their qualified to do this kind of stuff. And it was also nice to see Dmitry again! But where, oh where, Mary Murphy, is your assistant choreographer from S. 2? Bring back Artem, master of the Paso Doble!
*That Wade Robson Cirque du Soliel number definitely freaked me out. Three of those bunnies were incredibly scary, and one of them DEFINITELY LOOKED LIKE FRANK! You are so right, Buzz. I couldn't help but think of Frank, wearing his stupid bunny suit . . . Nonetheless, that routine was amazing and I absolutely must go to Vegas to see Chris Angel's Believe.
18I'm so sad it's over!! I loved all the dancers so much this year i never bothered to vote because I wanted them all to win! I so i'm more than happy that Joshua won- he's always been so sincere, like when he got the Mia Michaels contemporary piece and after it was over he said, "with Mia, it's so much more than dancing..." UUUGH! LOVE HIM!!
19I'm sorry but everyone who thinks Katee got second place is wrong. For the finale they always announce the winners in reverse order, so Courtney did the worst then Katee, then Twitch and then Josh won. That's a fact. If you don't believe me you can check the results on Dial Idol where you will see Twitch and Josh killed the girls in votes. Twitch definitely got second place, just as Danny and Travis did before him. (So yeah Twitch did get the shaft by not getting any money).
20I'm soooo sad the season is over. =( But this was the best finale yet, IMO. I loved seeing old contestants! Hok is still hot! I wonder if him & Lacey are still together. Sara looked a little chubs though (not dissin, just observing) but I still think she's a cutie. I agree legaleagle...where was Sabra???
Seeing Nigel & Mary dance was probably one of my favorite highlights...I never knew Nigel could really dance! He was pretty cute up there, hoofing w/ the little kids. And Mary...wow! She should definitely be able to show off those legs more often!!!
Yay for Joshua!! I totally teared up when Cat said his name!
21When I heard Joshua had won, I only thought one thing: what is wrong with America??? And than it made me really worried for the presidential elections...
22I loved the finale even though I missed the first hour! I totaly changed the channel when those jonas kids came on; I dont get them.
I was surprised Katee didnt win But Im happy Joshua won. I really want to know why Katee received $50k and Twitch didnt. Its weird and unfair. I hope that gets cleared up.
It was great to see what the past contestants are up to although I really wanted to learn what last seasons winner is up to. I forget her name but she was pretty cool too.
Ima miss this show. This is by far my fav dance show!
23Oh and it was cool seeing Nigel dance with the kiddies.
I don't get the hype over the Jonas Brothers at all. They are cute, sure...but the music is eh? I absolutely LOVED watching Mary Murphy and Nigel dance!! I also enjoyed seeing Twitchington do their Viennesse Waltz again, Katee and Twitch with "the door", and of course Chelsea and Mark with Bleeding Heart as well as Katee and Joshua do No Air. Great numbers! I LOVED Wade's Cirque du Soleil number but yes...Donnie Darko definitely! All in all this season was good. My fave season was last season though. I hope that Tabitha and Napoleon will continue to choreograph next season along with the other new one Sonia. I would also love to see Wade back more next season. He is my favorite male choreographer and Mia Michaels my favorite female. They are both genius!!!
24The one thing that really bothered me about the finale was that Twitch didn't get any kind of congrats or recap...obviously they'd run out of time by the end of the show. They should've cut out the Jonas Brothers and given Twitch the 2nd place send-off he deserved.
25Yes, it is a bummer for Twitch he didn't get a proper send-off...but I don't think ANY 2nd placer on SYTYCD has. So...
26Katee is the best and I wish she won, but I'm sure she'll do well anyway!
27I was really disappointed not to see Sabra!
28They DEFINITELY didnt send off Twitch right...kind of shoo-ed him offstage! That plus he was IN soooo many of the judges favorite routines!! He deserved a proper send off so yeah I'm with the rest of you : skip the Jonas Brothers and send off Twitch right!!!
Uhm I really like Joshua and I agree he deserved to win...but I am still sad for Katee.
I'm really sad the season is over
Really good finale all in all...loved seeing the dancers from past seasons, loved seeing our favorite dances again even if some did lack the luster of the initial performance.
29I'm with you buzz I don't get the JOnas brother but I think it's because I'm not 12 anymore. I'm fine with them as a concept though and if it's for real I like there wholesome image. in other words I would let my kids liten to them if I had any. As fo the hosst dancing I was stoked when Nigel tapped but I think mAry would have fallen prey to her own judging. I know she's older but where were the hips? Still I have to give it to her for getting out there.
I really was pulling for Twicth but in the end I think Joshua deserved to win. I think it is totally bogus that Katee got $50,000 and Twitch got nothing. I am happy for her because I think she deserved the money, but it seems like 1st and 3rd place get something but you get nothing for coming in 2nd.Maybe there is something and we just didn't hear about it.
I really like the dancers from other seasons coming back to dance but where is Sabre? I mean they haven't hardly mentioned her this whole season and they've had practically every other dancer from last season on and nothing from the winner.
I was also super duper pleased with the dances they picked from this season and I loved No Air the most all over again. Joshua and KAtee together equal no wrong to me. I also loved the door dance again,s o cute and cheeky and Twitch just gives that character life.
All in all I loved the show and I'm sad it's over. I will defintiely miss hearing Cat say the word judges. she's just too cute for words
30I loved the show - was sad that Katee or Twitch didn't win, though.
But, in my heart of hearts, I knew it was going to Joshua.
It was a really great way to end the season, and seeing the judges dance was fantastic!
I loved all the favorite routines they did, it was great seeing everyone again.
As for the Jonas Brothers, I guess I'm in the minority, I just love them. Nick Jonas (the youngest) usually plays guitar as well. For some reason, he doesn't til the end on that song. Which I find kinda odd, because then two of them are up there not doing anything. Maybe they'll redeem themselves to you, Buzz. haha.
Also - the first thing I thought of the Cirque de Soleil-Wade Robson routine was "OMG! Donnie Darko!" kinda creepy...but very cool.
I'm really sad that the season is over, because it was probably one of my favorites.
31I never watched this show before this season started and I tuned in, just in time to see the try-outs earlier this year and I liked Joshua and Twitch from the beginning. What a great show and for the first time in a long time, I am sad to see a show end. I am so happy for Joshua, he definitley deserved to win. And I loved Twitch, Katee and Courtney...I couldn't help watching them at times thinking how tired they must be!! Twitch is truly amazing in his own right and I wish as well that he would have had a better send off then just being scooted off the stage. I agree with everyone else that posted taking the Jonas brothers off the program to allow more time for Joshua and Twitch to enjoy their moment and have proper send offs would have been much more enjoyable to the audience and definitely more deserving to such amazing dancers. Here's hoping next season will be as great as this one...
32I actually didn't want Katee to make it as far as she did. Remember during the this seasons auditions she said she wouldn't try out again if she wasn't chosen for the second time? I really liked Courtney from the auditions...I was rooting for her and Twitch. Although after that 70's disco routine with Josh...I wanted him to win too. I think they're all winners
33I did not like Katee at the beginning either. I am glad they addressed that last week and she almost cried remembering it. I think she was just so emotionally spent at the time of the auditions. As for the 50K- who said that Twitch was number 2? They never claimed that.
34Lauren G he was. That's how they've always done it. The last two standing at the finale are 1st and 2nd place. Last year it was Danny and Sabra and before them it was Travis and Benji. It's a fact. If you really don't want to believe that though just look at dial idol where Josh and Twitch killed the girls in votes (but were pretty close to eachother in votes).
35And they specifically said Katee was getting money because she was the top female, not because she was 2nd place.
36I love Joshua, but I really wanted Katee to win, or at least get second. As likable as Twitch is, I just think that Katee was a far better dancer and deserved to be in the final 2 with Joshua.
37Blah. What a fricking let down. I've always been so excited after the finale, but this year I felt depressed. And it's not like I even hate Joshua, I just thought it was definitely the wrong decision. Katee or Twitch should have won.
"When I heard Joshua had won, I only thought one thing: what is
wrong with America??? And than it made me really worried for
the presidential elections..."
me too, Party. me too.
"WHO ELSE THINKS THAT CAT DEELY deserves an award for best host
ever!!!"
omg, seriously? Cat is the one part of the show that I HATE. When she says "judges" it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. I hate her so much.
I did love Nigel dancing and seeing some of the great dances of the season. I was SO disturbed by cirque du soleil. I will make sure that is never on my list of things to see.
38I think its great that Katee got the 50K. I honestly think that they would have given it to Josh or Twitch had they been the top guy (non winner)
39thought katee for the win was a sure thing. sad.
still bummed about mark and chelsie being off, but yes, i need to get over it.
and i really grew to love cat. she's a great emcee!
40oh yeah, Cat sucks. if i hear her say 'you know, a lot of people are born to do things. and i think you were born to dance" And shes always trying to sugar coat everything. if the dancers did a bad number she'll go 'but it was a really hard routine right' and the judges'll say no, its been done before and she'll say 'oh, but dont they look wonderful. gosh, i just want someone to shove her off stage one day.
41Cat just honestly loves all of the contestants and wants them to do well. I think it's fine for the host to try to boost morale, because it's not her job to critique. It's the judges job to critique, and this is one of the only shows on television where the judges don't spend their entire critique period cheerleading (I'm looking at you Paula and Randy) or being negative while refusing to supply any constructive criticism (Simon). The judges on SYTYCD are honest, above all else. And while I do think Mary got a little too cheerleady this season, if she really thought something was lacking, she wouldn't hesitate to let them know. Cat's job is simply to keep the show moving and keep the dancers in good spirits, and she does that really, really well.
42I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Cat. I honestly hated her first season, but since then I have grown to really embrace her and just find her silliness endearing.
43aw im so sad its over! i think it was right that courtney went home first out of the four of them, as much as i loved her. it really could have been any of the top three and i wouldnt have been surprised. i guess i was expecting twitch to win over joshua a little more, but both of them have performed great and are both very likeable. as a whole though, i dont think joshua (like katee) has had one bad number throughout the season, where as twitch has had a couple where he didn't do as great. i love how an untrained, street dancer won for the first time!
44--oh did anyone else notice that in the beginning highlight video they included the clip of Cat announcing that Will was the next dancer to leave the competition? that must have mad him feel GREAT, in the midst of watching all the HIGHLIGHTS from the season!
--i was so so so happy to see Will and Katee's routine again! it was amazing!!
I love this show, I don't know if in the US you'll be able to see this but in a few weeks So You Think You Can Dance Canada will start! One of the judges will be Jean Marc Genereux and some of the familar faces you'll see as guest judges/choreographers are Blake McGrath (season 1), Dan Karaty and Mary Murphy! Here's the website if you want to check it out: http://www.ctv.ca/mini/dance2008/
45I've been a fan of Katee since her very first routine with Joshua so I would've loved for her to win, but she got 50K which isn't too shabby. I LOVED the finale - who would've thunk that Nigel and Mary would perform for us?! Mary's got KILLER LEGS, it's a shame they're always hidden under that desk. The encore of the season's top 10 dances was fantastic but they always seem kind of lacking the second time around. I'm sad that the season is over and I probably won't ever see Katee and Joshua again, but hopefully Wade Robson comes back next season to work his magic on the new batch of dancers.
46What is wrong with Joshua winning and with America voting for him? How does that have anything at all to do with the upcoming elections? Is that really the proper use of than/then in that comment? So many questions....
47So I registered just so I can say you are all wrong about the Jonas Brothers. They are three talented heart throbs who have standards and a positive outlook, while the rest of today's society is on crack. The three of them are great roll models for kids and teens with the fact that all their lyrics ( which are written by the Jonas Brothers themselves ) are positive and contain no cussing, they know how to handle themselves and are so greatful and thankful for everything, and they are humble and don't have big heads. And for those of you who think they are a mini-phenomenon, you are way off because they are a huge deal, cuz you know sold out concert tours means they are totally unpopular or the fact that they have fans camping out for days at some of the "suprise" ( and free ) concerts they do means nothing either. And also if you think they are going to die off after a few years, go talk to the millions of dedicated fans.
48i see the jonas brothers mother has an account on buzz!
49Tutu i would have said the same thing about Hanson like 10 years ago....
