The critically acclaimed and insanely well-received Broadway show August: Osage County will be adapted for film, with the playwright Tracy Letts on board to write the screenplay. The show took home five Tony awards and a Pulitzer prize. Variety continues:
August follows one volatile Oklahoma family in the aftermath of its patriarch's unexplained disappearance. Clocking in at more than three hours, the play began to attract buzz during its preem at the Steppenwolf Theater last summer.
There have been no discussions about cast, but producer Jean Doumanian has said, "So many actors and stars have come to see it on Broadway, and we've gotten inquiries. People are enthusiastic about the film version."
It's strange, I've heard nothing but gushing praise for this play from multiple people in the past month or so — and now it's going to be a movie. Have you seen August: Osage County? What did you think?

I am so proud of Chicago theater right now!
1One of my Broadway loving friends who saw this last Spring declares it to be the best play he's seen in many, many years. He'll be as excited as I am to hear this news!
2Let me explain my comment. Steppenwolf (where this show originated) is in Chicago....and the entire Broadway cast were the original Chicago actors! And many of them were tony winners.
3I love this play. I think it's my favorite non-Shakespeare play (I study Shakespeare) I have ever seen, and I am teaching it to my Freshman in the Fall. Good thing I am doing it before the movie comes out! Then they'd never read it. But it will be fun to teach and be able to show them scenes too.
4I saw the show at Steppenwolf (Chicago) when it premeired and it was amazing. I bet it will make a great movie!! Tracey Lett's newest play is at Steppenwolf right now and it's great too.
5Of course I'll see it, I used to work at Steppenwolf and would support any project they undertake. It would be great if Steppenwolf Films were to be a part of this. Fans of the theatre should check out the blog on their website- actors and directors and staff write some really interesting things!
6The play was shallow - it had as much depth as an episode of "Mama's Family" with Vicki Lawrence. I sat there predicting every moment: Now the mother will have her monologue, now she'll end up alone and play the phonograph, now she'll crawl up the stairs to the attic. I loved the actress who played the daughter - her entire characterization consisted of running her hands through her hair.
People gushed because there's nothing better around, but that doesn't mean it was good. It was more camp than insightful.
Never believed one minute. Steppenwolff specializes in white trash plays where the actors scream alot.
