To be honest, I actually think a Spider-Man spinoff focusing solely on Venom would be a good way to rejuvenate the Spider-Man franchise, since Spidey's stories themselves seem to be getting pretty tiresome. It seems like this idea is going to work out well for the X-Men series, as they devote one whole movie to Wolverine's story.
However, while it sounds like the bigwigs at Sony are interested in the Venom movie idea, they're not convinced that Topher Grace — who played Venom in the last Spidey flick — could carry an entire blockbuster superhero movie.
What do you think? Would you want to watch Topher venomize for a full movie? And if not Topher, then who?

he's not badass enough, but I do like him. Just not as venom
1I liked him as Venom. I think he could do it.
2Nope. He was the weakest part of Spidey 3.
3I love topher grace. Eric Foreman rules!
4I'm not interested in seeing any more Spider-Man sequels or spin-offs. I like Topher Grace, but I don't think he could carry this kind of movie by himself.
5Gosh no. He is absolutely NOTHING like what Eddie Brock was supposed to be and I don't know what the casting people for Spiderman 3 were thinking. I was so horrified at that movie in general. He's no Venom. Not one bit.
6He's a good actor but he was a HORRIBLE choice for Venom. He just doesn't have that evil side (nor did Tobey Macguire, for that matter.)
7Spiderman 3 sucks. He doesn't need a spinoff movie.
8sucked*
9maybe - i'm not so sure about it. he has held lead roles in movies before but none of them have ever been major blockbusters, and doing a spin-off to one of the highest grossing franchises kind of puts an expectation out there. we'll have to see i guess - cause you never know. he might step up and blow us all away.
10Having read Spider-Man for many years, I always thought Topher should have played Peter Parker. Toby Maguire is completely uninteresting to me and I found it difficult to watch him play my favorite superhero. So I would definitely support an all-Topher movie.
11I thought Topher Grace was so lackluster as Eddie Brock /Venom and he was only on screen for 30 minutes I can't imagine a full 2 hours of him on the screen.
12Topher is awesome. I quit watching 70's show cuz he left. He is great at comedy AND at action.
13I'm bothered by topher grace starting with his need to call himself topher instead of chris or christopher (he's soo artsy) and second by his lack of acting talent
14I ove Topher. I don't think I see enough of him in movies.
15oops *love
16Hes a great Eddie Brock, but a horrible actor and cant pull off the bad ass that is Venom. It just doesnt work.
17Yuck... they would definitely need to get someone else.
18I like Topher but he's a best friend not a leading man.
19I adore him so very much, but I don't think he's enough of a name to carry a spinoff, though he's talented. But all superhero films are total hits or misses and when it's focused on a villain... that just sounds very complicated.
20i cannot begin to express how incredibly disappointed in the casting for venom.
21he's my favorite spiderman villian, yet they get an actor known for his dorky and quirky personality traits?
yeah, i was pissed.
if they give him a whole movie as venom, i'll boycott
He'd carry another movie better than Wimpy Maguire could, but I'm not sure it's such a great idea.
22While I liked him a little in Spidey 3, he just doesn't fit the Eddie Brock role enough to Have an entire movie on his shoulders. His acting skills are good, but it's messed up to admit that his scrawny body forced the visual designers to make Venom look and move around like Carnage instead. Maybe that's who they should have cast Grace as ?
23well topher aint the exact picture you'd get from thinking about venom, physically, cause if i remember correctly brock is soposed to be buff, but hey who knows. i agree alot with comment 23
24He was a HORRIBLE Venom. No amount of acting, make-up, or CGI could make him even a decent Venom. He is the polar-opposite of what Venom is, and that is why he is the worst choice.
25They should cast Topher to be Eddie Brock. Special effects and CGI can handle most of the Venom details.
26no he sucked and hopefully they get to show the real venom (hulking and crazy looking" other than the skinny weak looking one they put in 3
