Zooey Deschanel's Janis Biopic Is Delayed

Mar 21 2007 - 12:00am

It's no secret that PopSugar and I love Zooey Deschanel [0], and I know the girl can seriously sing [0]. But I'm also a big fan of Janis Joplin, and I'm having a hard time picturing Zooey playing the ill-fated singer in a new biopic, called Gospel According to Janis [1]. I mean, it's not as disconcerting as Kirsten Dunst playing Debbie Harry [1] or anything, and Deschanel has the acting chops to pull it off. Like I said, it's just hard to picture, and I look forward to having my apprehension proven wrong.

Anyway, it will be a while before I get to see results: Deschanel recently revealed that the biopic is delayed [2]. Thankfully, it sounds like it's still going to happen soon, as Deschanel told MTV News:

"[The film's] on hold right now, so I don't know when we're going to start shooting. We were supposed to shoot in November, but it's one of these things [that] seems like it's been hard to get all the money and the rights in place."

For more details on the movie,

The majority of the musical biography takes place on the day Janis died at age 27 — the same age Deschanel is now — from too much heroin and whiskey. That day, the actress says, is used in the movie as a sort of microcosm for the singer's life. According to the MTV story:

The minds behind the film arrived at this unique approach only after several failed attempts at doing the film with a more traditional narrative, Deschanel said. "I don't think a traditional biopic would capture someone as unique as Janis Joplin. When they first came to me with the project, it was with a different point of view," Deschanel recalled.

I can definitely see Deschanel's point: Janis Joplin just seems too wonderfully off-kilter to be captured by a standard Ray [3]-style life story. And I really look forward to hearing what one of my favorite young actresses does with such great songs. But enough about me; what do you guys think?
