The challenge on last night's episode of Project Runway was nothing new: Take inspiration from the sights and sounds of New York City and turn it into something fierce. It may not have been the most earth-shattering challenge (they did it in season two, remember, with Daniel V.'s orchid-inspired winner?), but if I were a designer on the show, I probably would have really enjoyed it.

Some designers were lacking in original inspiration, though: The "street" designer Terri went straight for — what else? — graffiti! Meh. We've seen it before. Viewing all previous seasons of Project Runway should be required for all contestants. Hilariously throwing a wrench in the old "find inspiration from the city" idea, though, was the fact that it was dark and rainy outside, so we watched people whose clothing aesthetic is supposed to be more refined than the rest of ours suffer through the hideousness that is the poncho. There's lots more to talk about, including one of the best comments made from a guest judge ever and the most crushing critique I've heard from Nina in awhile, so read more.
Before we chat about the good, the bad, and the ugly, here are some of my favorite (and least favorite) moments . . .
- Sandra "nightlife aficionado" Bernhard was the guest judge . . . because they took pictures of nighttime for the outfits? Who knows. Regardless, she delivered the best judgment ever, declaring that a woman wearing Terri's dress would turn to someone following her down a dark street and say, "I have a knife and I will cut you up!"
- Argh! I will wage a one-woman war to ensure Suede never wins fan favorite if he doesn't stop speaking in the third person! And in front of Heidi, no less!
- Stella is always kind of needing help. Like when she couldn't figure out how to work the digital camera. Or when she was in the fabric store begging for help. As soon as I saw the printers in the workroom, I thought, "Great, Stella won't know how to work that, either."
- Yes! Keith uttered his variation of the reality TV phrase that someone's just gotta utter at some point: "You know I’m not here to become their friend."
- Biggest eye-roll of the night goes to weirdo Blayne who tried to teach poor Tim the phrase "Holla atcha boy." It was lame and stupid, but kudos to Tim for being a good sport.
- Nina actually said she had nothing to say about one design. "The worst review is no review!" declared Michael Kors. Ouch.
As for the best and the worst:
- Kenley — I could never pull off wearing the dress she made, and I think the majority of women in America feel the same way. However, I agree with the judges that it was original and surprising that she managed to pull it off. There was a bubble of tulle, and the shoulders practically looked padded, but she made its '80s vibe work.
- Keith — Ick. Michael got it right when he said that dress looked like toilet paper. I'm surprised that didn't get him the boot.
- Terri — Her dress was the one that earned Sandra's awesome praise and the judges were pleased with the outfit. The entire episode I had a nagging feeling that her "graffiti" look was not going to turn out well, so she really surprised me.
- Emily — That dress looked like a really bad outfit from my Barbie's old closet. The ruffles were terrible, and I didn't like the colors either. What was she thinking?
- Leanne — Oh my gosh, what an improvement! It's nice to see a designer really absorb the judges' feedback (in her case it was to edit her designs) instead of complaining that they just don't "get it." I thought her skirt was gorgeous and was surprised she didn't win. I would totally wear that.
- Jennifer — Her dress was really dumpy, and the judges were not happy with it at all. Heidi was so put-off by it that she wasn't even curious to see what else Jennifer could do. For all Jennifer's talk of surrealism and such, I too am unsure of her point of view, and she'll be in trouble if she doesn't pull it together soon.
What did you think of last night? Were you sad Emily got axed? Or do you think it should have been Keith or Jennifer? Were you glad Kenley won or do you think it should have been Leanne or Terri?

-I can't believe Leanne didn't win. Me and my bf (I finally got him to watch it) loved the skirt. I wanted to go buy it!
-I hated Blayne's outfit. How did he not end up in the bottom three. It was so ugly. I much prefered the ruffled dress to that mess.
-Hated Hated HATED Kenley's dress. What the hell?
-I loved the "Holla at cha boy" moment. So funny!
1I thought Leeanne was going to win. That outfit had everything right. Seperates. Wearable. We definitely saw her inspiration. AND, she learned how to edit her clothing in such a short time. I am so excited that finally a designer understood what the judges meant and turned it around. Sure Laura did it with the black and white cocktail dress challenge, but it really meant something with Leanne b/c it didn't take all season to get there.
As for the "Holla atcha boy!" scene, I loved it. It was nice to see refined Tim try something edgy. Lol. He didn't look like a fool. It was a great moment. Now, that stupid poll asking if that should be his new phrase instead of "Make it work." was ridiculous.
2Oh and Stella's outfit... YIKES! Could her model breathe!?! She made her have love handles. Oy, I'm so not impressed by that outfit at all.
3I liked last nights episode. But I thought that Terri should have won. I really liked what she did and the judges gave her a lot of praise. I also really liked Leanne's design. The skirt was gorgeous and the fact that the skirt and top were separates but looked like a dress was super cute. She definitely made a great improvement from last week. I agree with you Buzz that Kenley's dress wasn't something that most women would be able to wear. It was cute and she pulled it off, but it wasn't very practical.
I hope that either Keith or Jennifer will be next to go. And I am SOOO OVER Suede and his 3rd person talk!!!
4I don't see why Stella didn't get kicked off. I absolutely hated her outfit. How was that "nightlife" and not "Stella doing her own thing no matter what the challenge was"? I thought Emily's was at least a little better than Stella's. I think Leeanne should have won for her improvement, and plus that skirt was seriously cute.
I thought there was no inspiration behind the black jumpsuit. Hm, we're looking for inspiration at night and you make a black outfit? REAL creative.
And Jerell needs to stop trying to make his own catchphrases. I noticed it more last week, especially when he said "I am SALTY." He, Blayne and Suade are trying to be the next Christian with the phrases, and it's just not working. Tim, however, could pick up "holla atcha boy" and it would be funny. I love Tim.
5"Holly Golightly goes to a Salvador Dali exhibit". If I hear Jennifer utter this phrase one more time.... it doesn't even make sense.
6I thought Jennifer should go. At least Emily's dress showed personality and attempted to create something fun and New York-ish.
7I actually laughed out loud when Keith said "You know I’m not here to become their friend." As if he strategically subbed in "become" for "make" so as to avoid being a cliche.
The moment between Blayne and Tim regarding "Holla atcha boy" was so awkward and dumb I wish they hadn't even included it.
8Leanne not winning was just wrong. How did that not completely embody New York at night? How did that purple cabana upholstery disaster win? I was utterly aghast. I think Project Runway might be losing a little style cred.
xoxo
9fleurfairy - Haha! Yes the more she describes her point of view the more confused I get.
10I wanted that skirt so badly! It was super cute!
11i thought jennifer should've gone home too, i think emily's could've worked if she would've not included the ruffles.
12I ♥♥♥ Stella. Not her designs, just her. I will be sad when she gets the boot.
Leatha for life!
13love terri and all of her work so far
leanne totally should have won this challenge
jennifer should have totally been out...the dress was fug
stellllllllllla and blayne are both up for the most annoying person EVER...they're neck and neck in a tie for me....
14Oh, and I actually hated Kenley's dress. When they called her name I assumed she was in the bottom three.
15While I don't think Emily's design was attractive, I do think her sewing was impeccable. If she had moved the ruffles around a bit or made them lie flatter, it would have been more appealing. I do not think she should have been eliminated at all and I was really angry that she was. Furthermore, if you look at hers and Blayne's next to each other, his was far, far worse and something NO ONE in their right mind would ever wear out on the town. He should have been eliminated last night. How did they overlook that he put a high neck, long sleeves and a below-the-knee hem on a nighttime dress?!?
16You know I really loved Kenley's dress. I thought it was cute and kind of funny. You'd definitely have to have a lot of confidence and a sense of humor to wear it though. I also liked Kelly's and Terri's.
And just in case nobody's seen this before:

17Leann should have won! Hands down. I liked the silhouette of Kenley's dress (which is strikingly similar to the Balenciaga Sprin 08 line...), but I thought the print was hideous, and the concept was not overly original. Stella and Blayne are both really aggrivating. I hate how so much episode time is devoted to Stella. Ugh....
18I thought Jennifer should have gone home. It looked really dumpy and poorly made. It was a toss up for me for the winner though, Leanne or Terri. I can't Suade or Blayne. Stella outfit was no surprise and I thought it was unoriginal.
19I'm so sick of Blaine trying to create a new catchphrase every episode, he needs to go.
20I am so suprised that Leannimal didn't win. I think they picked Kenley this week because Natalie Portman clearly robbed Kenley of her rightful win last week, so maybe, if Leann does well next week, she'll get the win she deserved. Her skit was so amazing this week. So amazing.
And Blayne really needs to stop trying to make -licious happen. It's never going to happen.
21Seriously, does Project Runway have any more original ideas? I could think of several ideas off the top of my head, but I guess they wouldn't be as "interesting." I didn't like a lot of the outfits last night and I really think Stella needs to go home because she only has one design aesthetic (LEATHER, wtf?)
Blayne: His graffiti-like dress was pretty cute but I wouldn't wear it.
22Daniel: Lovely and simple
Emily: I thought it was all right, she definitely didn't deserve to go home so soon
Jennifer: Boring and matronly, she should have gone home plus she has NO personality
Jerell: I think his dress should have won because it was creative and glamorous
Joe: Meh, mediocre clubbing outfit
Keith: I thought it was dress was kinda interesting but too white. It didn't remind me of toilet paper though...
Kelli: Very S&M, goth vibe
Kenley: HATED this dress. She looks like an 80s prom dress Barbie
Korto: Too boring, but I like the idea of a pantsuit
Leanne: Cute & classy, my second favorite dress
Stella: Hooker wear
Suede: The dress looked pretty hip, I think Beyonce would wear something like that for street clothes. Suede is REALLY annoying though.
Terri: She's wearing way too much, over the top and I don't like the dress shirt/pants combo
I thought that Emily should have stayed and Jennifer should have gone. At least Emily had personality and the black dress itself was made really well. And yeah, I can't wait for Blayne, Suede, and Stella to go.
23Leanne should have won for sure. That skirt was so cute, I would have worn it. I'm so sick of listening to Blayne and Suede. Who talks in 3rd person? Annoying!!!
24ok...but what about blayne's crack-head, wide-eyed moment staring at kenley saying "i'm going to eat you". wtf? totally creepy.
love leanne's outfit. really didn't like kenley's...not enough to win anyway.
and what IS with stella? she always seems shocked when tim says there's a surprise or an angle to the challenge. hello?! that's the whole point! and it is hilarious, yet annoying, that she is SOOOOOO needy. she complains about EVERYTHING.
25Leanne should have won and Jennifer should have gone home!!
26You are so right about Emily's dress looking like a Barbie dress.
Kenley's dress looks like the Balenciaga Spring 08 collection...thats probably why she won. My mom said it looked like a tumor was growing out of the model's hip.
Top 3 this week: Leanne (adore the skirt), Jerell (look at the train, wow), Kelli (daring, fits challenge)
27Also Liked: Korto (looks like a real woman could wear it, but not exciting enough for this challenge)
Meh: Suede, Joe, Keith, Stella
Oh god my eyes (aka fugly patterns): Kenley, Terri
Flameno hooker dresses: Blayne, Emily
Worst: Daniel (this looked like the same as those ugly brown dresses from last week, did he just reuse his leftover fabric?), Jennifer (pregnant dress and terribly constructed, she should have been out for the hemline alone)
tsp - I forgot about Blayne's creepy eyes staring at Kenley. That was soo weird.
Oh, and I forgot to mention how random was it that Sandra Bernhard was the guest judge? is she even relevant anymore? No offense to her fans but I don't get the appeal...
28How many 80's looks can you put into one single outfit!? The neck, the shoulders, the arms, the fabric, the bubble... wtf? If anyone wore this in public they would be on every worst dress list. Talk about needing to edit.
29Jennifer should have been the one sent home, IMO. Emily's dress was cheesy, yeah, but at least it was well executed and not so dull!
Stella needs to go because everything she makes will look the same!
30Leanne should have won this week. I'd buy her outfit right now if I could. I LOVED her skirt and her blouse. Beautiful! Of course, Kenley should have won last week, so . . . Maybe Leanne will win next week?
31I hate to say this because I love project runway but this is the second challenge that's a repeat from a previous season and I'm getting kinda bored with it.
32Yes, the first thing I thought when I saw Kenley's dress was "Balenciaga knockoff!" Please refer to it here: http://styleology101.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/balenciaga-dress.gif
The designers seem either untalented, fame-hungry or both this season. Blayne, Suede and Stella are so strange, and tonight was the first time that I actually realized Leanne and Jennifer are not the same person. Could have fooled me. The casting for both the contestants and the models is very odd. It makes me wonder if the rumors of Bravo sabotaging the show before its move to lifetime are true.
33OMG - the third person thing is SOO annoying! that's for sure. i don't know how everyone doesn't beat suede up already.
you know, the first couple episodes i didn't think that there was much talent aside from like 2 designers, but i'm starting to see otherwise. there were a few great designs going down that runway the other night, and i think that it's a sure sign that we're not going to see complete crap all season. i'm not sure who's my favorite yet, but i think that there's potential out there.
i LOVED the black tier skirt, that was adorable and very very wearable - and the kinley dress was cute, but i'm not sure if it's realistic cause it's just so couture/costume - but it was beautiful.
34has anyone else been really confused at the judging??? the picks for top 3 and bottom three every single week i keep finding to be WAY off. ive been thoroughly disappointed this season. and i am a HUGE fan.
35I thought Keith should have gone, and Leanne should have won. If her outfit was available on Bluefly, I would buy it. (I wouldn't buy Suede's winner from last week though...)
36I kept thinking the judges were joking when they were praising Terri's design. There was too much going on with the pants and the high neck-line. It looked like a pile of vomit.
I was not in love with Kenley's pattern, but absolutely loved the silhouette and the tulle.
I also adored Leanne's design and would wear that skirt in a heart beat. So classy with a twist of funk.
I don't even care what Stella, Suede and Blayne design...I want them gone! It's like Bravo went around looking for the most annoying people on earth at 90s raves, gay dating sites and Queens dive bars.
37I adore Kenley and loved her dress; so original. I'm glad Leanne didn't win because as beautiful as it was, it was a bit boring.
Jennifer needs to go and cut her "Holly Golightly" bull, it offends me (
38I loved Emily. I think she ultimately (unlike Keith and especially Jennifer) has a good eye. Plus, Jennifer's hems? Good lord. Awful.
