We've been hearing about Disney's first black princess for a while now, and today they've released a brief teaser trailer that introduces us to both princess and frog in the animated Princess and the Frog. The story is described as "a fairy tale centered on a young girl named Princess Tiana who lives in New Orleans' French Quarter during the Jazz Age." Tiana is voiced by Dreamgirls's Anika Noni Rose.
Tiana was dreamed up after several rewrites of the original concept for this princess, and the animators have quite a while to continue working on the movie; The Princess and the Frog will open December 25, 2009. For now, you can check out the teaser trailer (which is strange to watch — yet kinda refreshing — after so many Pixar-y movies) if you read more.

Looks cute enough. I read that they changed it from the classic title "The Frog Princess" to "The Princess and the Frog" due to public outcry. Just plain silly.
Looks cute, I can't wait
From the trailer, the movie really does look cute yet I can almost hear the negative voices already.
I can't wait, that looks so cute! I miss the old 2-D animation. I'm also excited that they will finally have a black princess, and that it is set in New Orleans.
Ya i heard that about them changing the title. I can't wait to see this though, I heard about it last year.
Yeah, that Independent article I linked to in the post has this, regarding the title change:
"The film studio began making changes a year ago, first to its title, The Frog Princess, which some had interpreted as a slur."
I'm surprised they made the Prince Middle Eastern.
what is with all the stereotypes? she is a black princess and therefore must be from New Orleans? gawd.
this is exciting
I'm so excited to see this movie! The princess turning the frog around is very Old-School Disney, which I've missed.
I'm glad they went old-school disney animation.
I love that Disney is bringing back regular hand-drawn animation. Pizar movies don't do it for me. I grew up with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Lion King, etc. However, I'm not sure if this story is the best way to re-introduce Pixar-kids to normal animation. I think a real medieval fairy tale story might have been a better route.
That charicaturish lightning bug isn't going to do much to make us forget Song of the South. Or Dumbo. Or pretty much any Disney movie that plays up ethnic stereotypes for comic relief.
Why couldn't they have just made a regular princess movie where she happens to be black? why does it have to take place in New Orleans/Old South? I don't recall the Frog Princess being set in New Orleans. Sheesh.
Okay, I was all ready to comment on how excited I was for this to open this Christmas, then realized it would be opening NEXT Christmas. Unacceptable! I hate when studios release information about movies to soon.
how cute!!
cute
i'm not trying to be offensive, being black myself. but they only had to go through an asain princess, middle eastern, multiple white princesses, a half human half sea creature princess, a ant princess and a fairy princess to finally get around to a black one?
and yeah, couldnt they just make it a typical princess movie? why is it deep in the jazzy south. well, i can let it slide. at least they didnt name her shaniqua-tay.
Spazzydana I agree, I'm not exactly excited about the New Orleans back drop either. Was it really that hard to 'imagine' black people coming from somewhere else?
The original was a russian fairy tale, i wish they would have kept it that way.
I was getting around to say that spazzydana (about all the other ethnic princesses). I have no problem with it being in NO, i think it's cool.
Don't forget about the Native American Princess Pocahontas.
Looks alright. Now its time for a Mexican/Latina princess, or even better, A MIXED RACE PRINCESS. Preferably in a mixed race relationship. Yay.
Hey Raieven, the prince in this movie is named Naveen, and he is voiced by Bruno Campos, so there's your mixed race relationship. I can't wait to see what the actual character of the prince looks like.
Ooh nice, thanks for the info, I agree it will be interesting to see how they animate the prince.
I hope it's an actual musical with Anika singing in it. She's amazing. I hated it when they steered away from the characters singing to just pumping a huge Phil Collins score through the whole thing.
I can't wait to see this movie!
