Ah, Will Ferrell. He — and/or his characters — are incredibly divisive in the sense that you either go to a Will Ferrell movie for him or you avoid a Will Ferrell movie because of him. And while I used to be part of the former camp (I mean, Elf and Stranger Than Fiction are really good), I'm starting to fall into the latter (see: my feelings on Step Brothers). There are only so many times I can watch him portray the same immature, idiotic, yet somehow supposedly endearing role before I throw in the towel. So, as you can tell, I'm starting to feel some Ferrell fatigue. Are you?

There is nothing wrong with having a niche. He's always funny
1He's gone so downhill. Semi-pro was barely tolerable. Anchorman will always be one of my favorite movies and I love him in Old School and Wedding Crashers as well. But he has just released a slew of bad movies recently. There the kinds of movies that have funny parts here and there, but on the whole are so lacking. I know he's capable of better, which is why its frustrating.
2BUZZ, i'm in the same boat as you right now. just like you, i loved both "elf" and "stranger than fiction," and i think i know why.
ELF was his first lead movie so, of course, he was refreshing to watch there, especially when it followed "old School," which he played a funny supporting character and had everyone wondering, "what's the next funny thing Will Ferrell will do?" And then we get ELF. it was the first time movie-lovers got to see his childish, idiotic character and so it was not irritating and we all thought it was endearing. Also the whole childish/idiotic shtick was part of the movie since he played a character taken away from his "North Pole" environment and suddenly thrown to the "human" world....but for some reason ELF will always be the one idiotic, childish role everyone avoids saying sucks or hates in all Will Ferrell movies because it was the first. it was the original of the many Will Ferrell childish, idiotic characters to come our way.
As for "Stranger than Fiction," it was just different from all his roles. i've always said 'STF' is Will's 'The Truman Show' (Jim Carrey) and 'Punch Drunk Love' (Adam Sandler). Sure he still played that naive/child-like card but this time it makes him eccentric not annoying. Also i think it was nice for Will to interact or work with actors that are outside his own "frat pack/brat pack." he was working with actors that had good comedic timings but are subtle about it, which made Will be subtle with his comedic chops; therefore he was not over-the-top. Also he played an ADULT doing ADULT things and interacting with other ADULTS in a movie for ADULTS. I think that's really what set Stranger Than Fiction apart.
I apologize for the long novel, but it's actually something i been wanting to express since Tuesday at work when someone mentioned Will about his new movie and if i liked his movies. it was 9 in the morning doing shipment for a retail store. i was not in the moment to talk at that time.
3oh goodness so many typos!! LOL.
i meant I WAS NOT IN A GOOD MOOD TO TALK AT THE TIME.
4Uhm well for me its the opposite, I started out with the fatigue almost...I was never a fan till Taladaga Nights and then he won me over completely with Stranger Than Fiction!! So while I agree that Semi Pro wasn't his best...I definitely need a few more movies before I'm sick of him!
5I love love love Anchorman. I could watch that movie once a week and not get tired of it. And he has made some other really entertaining movies...Stranger than Fiction, Old School, Elf. But he has also made some really bad ones...Kicking and Screaming, Bewitched, Blades of Glory. So he is really hit or miss for me. I'll still watch them though in the hope that they hit
.
6couldn't agree more, pinkflats. Let's face it, he is funny. He's capable of making me laugh. But it's tiresome.
7Will Ferrel just is NOT funny. His best role was in Zoolander. And it was all downhill from there!
8as much as i love a GOOD movie, I'm a sucker (i grew up with 4 brothers!) for my comedy boys: Will, Ben, and Adam. All have had their fair share of BAD movies (what actor, especially comedian, hasn't?) they have plenty of laugh out loud ones, and don't stop trying! I dont think I'll ever be tired of Will! People have to realize that he isnt exactly TRYING to make good movies, he's trying to make people laugh, which he does most of the time.
9Omg. My sister and I were JUST talking about this a minute ago. I went on Sugar and saw this post. What a coincidence. Anyway, I think Will Ferrell is hilarious, but like some of the above posters, I think it's hit or miss. My sister and I hated Bewitched. There was ONE funny moment in that movie. I love Anchorman, Old School, etc. I really do like him as an actor, but I'm not sure if I'll be going to the theater to watch his next movie. I'll wait until it comes on DVD.
10I can't stand him, never thought he was funny.
11Anchorman, Old School, Talledega Nights, Elf, and his little cameos in films like Wedding Crashers are the best of Will Ferrell. I even liked Stranger Than Fiction. He has had a few bad movies lately, but I mean who doesn't? As I recall, Blades of Glory wasn't that great but it was still a hit - he's a really funny guy so I know he'll be coming out with something good soon.
12This is insane, my sister, mom, and I were just discussing how much were tired of him. I haven't seen any of his movies, but I'm tired of all the advertisements for his silly movies.
But I can see why he's making so many, when your hot your hot and you gotta hit it hard and as long as possible. He will eventually go away.
13I'm so sick of him, I have been for years. Alas, people like stupid movies so he'll still have his "career".
14Maybe - So far I've liked all of the movies I've seen him in except Blades of Glary, which was just alright. And I haven't seen Semi-Pro yet. But I have found that Will Ferrell movies get better with repeat viewings because they get funnier and more quotable as you go along. I didn't like Talladega or Anchorman a lot at first, but now I think they are hilarious. I mean look at how many movies he has been in: Austin Powers 1&2, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, Zoolander, Old School, Elf (which is one of my faves), Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Stranger than Fiction, Blades of Glory, etc. I'm sure most people like at least one or two of those movies listed, but yeah I agree that his shtick is getting a bit old.
15I loved Anchorman and Stranger than Fiction. Talladega Nights was funny and I still quote it occasionally (like the "baby Jesus" lines), but it was not as funny as I'd hoped from seeing the commercials.
Here's how I feel about the rest: Will Ferrell makes the best worst movies I've ever seen. And I rarely like or hate movies, so it's kind of a distinction.
Blades of Glory was THE best worst movie I've ever seen. So, of course, I love it and I've actually sat through it TWICE. I rarely ever watch a movie twice, so that's also kind of a distinction. (I've also watched Stranger than Fiction twice.)
So I don't mind if Will Ferrell keeps on keeping on the way he is. I wouldn't mind if he changed it up a little, either.
16Oh, and when I saw Blades of Glory at the theater (yet another distinction: I rarely see movies in the theater, yet I've seen both B of G and Stranger than Fiction there...I actually went to see S than F for my birthday!), the ending stunned both my sister and I.
Blades of Glory really had the ending we least expected. And I mean the ending ending.
My sister and I left the theater and walked out into the sunshine with confused looks on our faces, looking at each other occasionally and cracking up. When asked what that was about, we'd crack up some more.
That's why I still like Will Ferrell.
17I only like him as a supporting actor. As a main guy he is def tiresome.
But I have to admit, I love Mugatu
18I'm probably in the minority but I also loved Night at the Roxbury... I thought it was cute and one of the better SNL spinoff off movies (aside for Wayne's World, obviously).
Anchorman was just gold. Although it was more of a group thing than just Will Ferrell. And the Landlord was awesome.
I do agree that recently, his characters have been outplayed
19"Blades of Glory was THE best worst movie I've ever seen"
20Four words: SNAKES ON A PLANE
Yes! He's in that catagory of "the same couple of people making similar movies over and over."
21I'm in the "avoid a movie because of him" camp. Since I've never been a fan, I simply don't go to or rent the films in which he "stars."
22I loved Elf and I love Anchorman and his cameo in Wedding Crashers, but he needs to take a break and make better choices.
23I love Will, but he's been slipping ever since "Blades of Glory."
I was really impressed with his work in "Stranger than Fiction," and I'd love to see him in more everyman, Jimmy-Stewart-type parts. I think if he pairs up with the right director, he could graduate to a second career in more serious (but still endearing) roles. But first he's gotta cut the cord with the "Old School" crowd.
24Fatigued? Yes, from the beginning. Alas, I am not a fan.
25I just hope he doesn't go too far down the Eddie Murphy route.
I'm even more sick of Adam Sandler though.
26He is def a funny man but sometimes I do tire of his antics. I plan on renting Step Brother when it releases to DVD but I know it will be just like Ricky Bobby and have a few hysterical lines and the rest of the film will be a bit boring.
27I have liked him since SNL but like with most other comedians, they tend to stay in their hit role instead of branching out to something different. Think Chris Farley!
Blades of Glory was funny but other than that I have had Ferrell Fatigue since the beginning. Just not a Ferrell fan. I must be lamebrained but I just don't get his humor.
28He needs to take a break...and comeback and wow us....please!
29These movies are so easy to avoid. I don't like this type of comedy at all so usually if Ferrell is in it, I just know that I won't like it.
30I lasted 10 minutes in Talladega Nights and had to turn it off. Will Ferrell needs to take a break.
31Awww, I love Will Ferrell! I think all the Frat Pack actors (apart from Steve Carrel) play the same kinda role. I think he's very funny ( Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Elf, Zoolnader, Blades of Glorys- phew! are my favourites) I think as long as he makes me laugh, I'll never get tired of him, and if you're sick of him- don't watch the movie!
32Doesn't matter how hard I try to give this guy a chance to convince me that he is funny; but from day one, I still believe he is a fool. Nothing but an overgrown late bloomer experiencing a midlife crisis. On the wilderness show I thought of him as a set back. So that was one wilderness show I didn't mind skipping. But hey, a man has got to earn his wages. But not from me.
33Will Ferrell, WAL! How old is this guy anyway? Geesh! What kind of target crowd is he shooting for or coming from? A man with a pea sized brain! Gotta admit, he's got the kahunas to make a fool of himself on the big screen. All you people that show up or pay to watch his movies...don't you feel the least bit that you have been ripped off? I'm saving my cash for a different class!
34Ahhhh! A disgrace to the name! Save my money for a 'Better' class is what you should say Eric77. I'm with you! Sorry Will Ferrell, but this world isn't big enough for one more 'Will'. You stink!
