The wonderfully over-the-top epic adventure 300 conquered the box office for the second weekend in a row. According to Variety, even St. Patrick's Day and the NCAA tournament didn't stop the male-skewing movie from raking in $31.1 million this weekend for a combined total of $127.4 million.

Ten dollars of that $31.1 million came from me, and I have to say, 300 fully lived up to my expectations. Sure, the movie is lacking in substance, and the clunky script leaves a lot to be desired. But it also looks unlike anything I have ever seen committed to film, which is more than I can say for most movies, and I walked away thoroughly satisfied by the visually indulgent flick. The movie well blends a historical-adventure tone with graphic-novel cheekiness. The dialog and narration are often delivered with epic-poetic weightiness, while the endless march of eye-candy looks ripped from the most high-brow of comic book panels. Though the scenes are crafted from digital animation and live action, the effect is more like a painting. So during the frequent moments when the dialog slips into anachronistic silliness, you can simply admire the canvas before you.

Unsurprisingly, the movie's biggest weakness is its script, with monologues that alternate between fittingly regal and completely laughable. Star Gerard Butler does the best he can with the material, throttling into total power-hungry hyperbole whenever appropriate.
But good dialog and even good acting isn't the point of 300. It is a movie about the Spartans, an ancient people literally bred for battle, as is the movie itself. And for a film that's pretty much two solid hours of fight scenes, it is captivating and even graceful at times, and unlike some other movies of its ilk, there isn't a single instant of dullness.

My hubby has been bugging me to see this- since you liked it Buzz, i might give it a try
1Did you partake in the 300 Imax experience? After all the recommendations from friends who I never thought would actually see the flick, I'm finally getting a group together to see it this weekend. My rationale is that Rodrigo Santoro's in it and that'll give me a good fix of my second favourite new Lost castmember, but I hope the yaysayers are right!

I'm seeing in in IMAX this weekend too! I need to prepare myself mentally tho...
3what has two thumbs and thought 300 was fABtaculous?...that's right, this guy.
4I’ve heard nothing but great reviews for this movie, so I guess I’m at the movies this weekend. The Imax experience is pretty intense, so I hear. Even Reoper gave it two thumbs up. Check out his review at http://www.atthemovies.com . This site has great reviews and full length high-production video reviews of movies online. Just thought I’d share for all the movie fans, since I work with Ebert and Roeper.
5I did laugh out loud at some of the dialogue. Overall, however, there were enough jaw dropping moments (that king and queen romp was royal indeed) that I’d call it an enjoyable movie watching experience.
6I saw it this weekend too! I loved it
The images on the screen were sometimes
breathtaking and being a history buff, I noticed that most of the events were accurate
7Great review, Buzz. I haven't seen 300 yet, but it's on my to-see-soon list now. Thanks!
8the regular movie experience was intense! I was drug to the film by my so loving boyfriend, but actually enjoyed it. We then had to spend the weekend watching "The Real 300" on the history channel, which was also good. I didn't know it was at IMAX, I might have to skip that!
9You guys do realize this is based on an entirely true story, and a great deal of dialogue is directly from historical texts. Stuff that you may have found corny such as:
....Xerxes sent heralds asking to deliver up their arms. The answer from Leonidas was "come and take them" (Μολών λαβέ).
....A Spartan, who was told about the great number of Persian soldiers, who with their arrows will conceal the sun, he answered: "so much the better, we will fight in the shade"....
Just thought it was funny that the mine gripe about the film a lot of you had was dialogue, yet the film was true to historical scripts of the actual event.
It is almost as if someone saw a movie based on portions of the bible, with direct quotes from the bible, and then called that quote drive dialogue weak....
10I saw 300 over the weekend too! In the IMAX theater. The movie was awesome! I loved it. The imagery were very enjoyable.
11I saw it this pass weekend like may of you. But i went to a ghetto movie theater where someone turn on the fire alarm in the middle of the movie and we all had to evacuate just when they movie was starting to get real good. We got free movie tickets and i did get to finish the movie. but i was highly angry i missed a lot of it.
