After last week's relatively lackluster season five premiere, boy was I pleasantly surprised with this week's episode of Project Runway. It was definitely my favorite episode of the series in a long while. Heidi started the night off by having the designers choose their models, and what a choice it was. See, after the designers were given the challenge of creating a cocktail dress using eco-friendly fabrics, they found out that their models were their clients. And while my hope that at least one of the models would be as crazy as Morgan from season one wasn't realized, the night was chock full of drama regardless.

Dramatic moment number one: when the designers learned that the models would be going to Mood to pick out the fabrics for them. Sweet. Even Stella said, "Oh great, I'm going to have somebody that probably doesn't know that much about fabrics to begin with go pick me out some fabric." Big words from someone who used trash bags for her last challenge! Dramatic moment number two: when some of the designers realized that their models had chosen a lot of the same fabric, and not enough of it at that. Ruh-roh.
There's a lot more to discuss, including a gallery of all 15 looks and a very, very special guest star, so read more.
Before we chat about the good, the bad, and the ugly, here are some of my favorite (and least favorite) moments . . .
- Did Blayne really call Heidi Darth Vader and Darthlicious? Yep, I think so. As he explained, "because on the outside she's all shiny, all put together, but on the inside she's crazy [Darth breathing]."
- Seriously, Suede talking in the third person is as annoying as Ricky's hats from last season. Must. Stop. Now. Thank you to Leanne for calling him out.
- As always, I'm loving Tim's vocabulary. The juxtaposition of "caucus" and "hot mess" is awesome.
- Blayne making fun of Stella was perhaps the funniest ProjRun moment ever. "My cat's leather," "I like to watch leather TV," "my husband's leather," "my kids came out of me — leather." Um, amazing!
- Gratuitous Wesley underwear shot. Yes, please. Speaking of Wesley, he has confirmed that he's dating a fellow contestant.
- Biggest news of the night: guest judge Natalie Portman. She's just as adorable as I would have imagined.
Now, on to the highs and lows of the looks:
- Stella — I'll give her props for keeping to her leather-y design aesthetic with her one-shouldered number. But, it's not my personal taste. I find comfort that it's not Natalie Portman's either.
- Kenley — Kenley's gold sheath dress was stunning. The collar looked like something Christian Siriano would have designed and the belt-dress combo reminded me of Carrie in the Sex and the City movie. I was surprised that Kenley didn't win.
- Korto — I didn't hate her short gold dress with exposed seams, but it did look inside-out. Bless Michael Kors for his comment: "Even curvy girls, they don't want fins off their butt." I can't really imagine girls of any size wanting fins off their butt. Well, except maybe this one.
- Wesley — Wesley began his defense by saying that he was limited by the amount of fabric he had. No, no, no, Wesley. First you must say something good about the dress; then, as a side note, say "and all that with such little fabric." Unfortunately, his rather short and poorly executed dress was enough to send him packing. Needless to say, this was a big blow in the eye candy department for me.
- Leanne — Leanne's dress was very similar in length and tone to Wesley's, but hers had bows throwing up all over it. Of the two, I definitely thought Leanne's was worse. But maybe I'm biased.
- Suede — Suede's criss-cross dress with tulle skirt was the most unique of the night. It was also really pretty. Something that Natalie Portman would look great in. Even she admitted that she would wear it. So, it was no shock that Suede won. Although, personally, I was expecting them to choose a more versatile dress since it's going to be sold on Bluefly. Oh, and speaking of Bluefly, Christian Siriano's collection is now available.
What did you all think? Were you sad to see Wesley go so soon too? And did Suede deserve the win?

I liked Suede's dress, but I liked Kenley's better and suspect that it would sell better on Bluefly. But in terms of originality, I have to give props to Suede. His talking in the third person about himself is definitely irritating. I find it more annoying than both Ricky's hats and his crying in every other episode.
1I wanted Stella to turn to Blayne and say "your leather, come over here so i can skin your ugly a$$"
Leannes didnt have bows all over hers, they were loops.
Suedes stupid jean jacket is bothering me
Korto is too dramatic i want her Aufed.
Thank god Wes and his shorts are gone.
2I thought Suede's was freaking ridiculous... maybe I don't know enough about fashion to "get it." But I thought it was terrible.
3Kenley was totally robbed of winning this challenge. Hers was the best out of all of them.
4I was not fond of Suede's dress because the execution, the actual cut of the dress, was so poor. That neckline was uneven, even if the bias strips were visually interesting. I think Kenley was robbed of her win, and her dress would definitely sell better on Bluefly.com.
Caterepillar, I thought the same thing about what Stella should have said to Blayne!
5While Suede was making his dress I thought it was really ugly, but it looked quite nice once it was finished. I'm still not sure it should have won.
I'm so upset Wesley is gone!!! I knew it from the moment I saw the dress though; the fit was just so off. He and Leanne were my two favorites, so it was really tough seeing them both at the bottom.
I hope Stella goes soon! And I think Kelli deserved more recognition for her dress this episode! I like Kenley, too, but I saw a bit of a b*tch (maybe?) coming out last night, and it looks like it may only continue next week. I hope I'm wrong about that!
6Besides all of that... When they asked you to vote about the most annoying thing thus far... Sude talking about himself had more % than the others and one of the lower ones won... Just thought it was kind of funny.
7Wesley didn't deserve to go home; I don't even think he had the worst of the shrot, shiny & tight dresses. I really didn't like Suede's dress, at all. Korto's was not that bad; I have a feeling it wasn't complete. Overall, I don't think this competition was fair since the models got to pick the fabric but I guess that was the challenging part. I think with Wesley gone & the fact that a lot of people thought he would go much further, it's going to be interesting to see who the top designers are out of this bunch.....
8Buzz, it amazes me that we have the exact same thoughts on every ProjRun episode!
9Wesley and Leanne's dresses were both terrible and of the same material, I couldn't tell which one was worse. I wish both of them had gone home!
Also, didn't it seem like they showed clips in the preview commercials that weren't in the episode? Where was the comment about the feathers being inappropriate? Was Tim's Jurassic Park comment in the show? It is possible I missed it...need to watch again.
10I kind of think that Kenley didn't win because her dress would be hard to manufacture. I mean you would have to hand sew the collar every time and Bluefly's not going to want to do that. Suede's dress is definitely easier to mass produce, and since it wasn't an immunity challenge, I think that played a factor into the decision.
11Wesley was the only visually appealing person on this season. Seriously, I have never seen a uglier bunch of people in my life.
12I was SO sad that Wesley went home. I LOVED him! Daniel is a tool. lol
I really only liked that dark blue dress that no one even mentioned or and Suedes. That was pretty beautifully done.
I hate like half of them which sucks but Kelly is my favorite.
13I didn't really like Suede's dress, personally i think Kenly should have won, i could see it on bluefly
14I honestly thougt Stella was going home for her dress when I saw it. Tacky tacky.....I couldn't believe they loved it!
15I think Suede had the best design, while kenly's dress was nice, we've all seen it before and I think its won enough challenges. Stella needs to GO, she is terrible. That dress looked like something the dancer on the side of a stage at a guns and roses concert in 1989 would wear SERIOUSLY!
16Did anyone else think that Wesley looks a lot like that actor Bryan Greenberg from "October Road"?
I can't remember who did the dress in the first row + second column, but that was probably my favorite. Kenley's was very sophisticated and I liked Suede's dress a lot too. I really hated Stella's dress though.
17I liked Suede's but it just looked scrappy; and I adored Kenley's, so my style.
I'm SO sad Wesley a.k.a. adorably cute went home
But Natalie (may fave actress) was as as sweet and lovely as always. This ep. was so heavenly for me: 2 of my fave things
18Boring season so far, yes? No interesting personalities. Santino, miss you!
19Here's my take:
Stella: Liked the lacing on the side of the dress, but thats it. Stop saying "leather."
Kenley: Dress was very chic and I love the belt.
Blayne: His pink dress was actually adorable, and he was funny when he imitated Stella.
Daniel: Looks like it took very little effort.
Emily: That dress was WAY too short.
Jerell: UGLY, odd dress.
Jennifer: LOVED her orange and gray gown, but very casual.
Joe: blah, very boring dress.
Keith: weird and bunchy outfit.
Kelli: Meh.
Korto: Hideous and ill-fitting.
Leanne: Interesting but complicated.
Suede: Cute and unique. So annoying when he talks in the third person.
Terri: Fab.
Wesley: Drab.
My favorite people this week were Kenley, Blayne, Jennifer, Suede, and Terri. I don't think Suede should've won the challenge, though, it should have been Kenley or Terri. I also think that Korto should have gone home instead of Wesley.
Btw, did you hear Wesley and Daniel are dating? I saw it on People.com
20I also thought it was neat to have Natalie Portman as a guest host, but I wasn't very surprised to see her because I accidentally saw the news on the Bravo website.
21Winniecooper - I miss Santino too! This season seems like it will lack a lot of drama or personality.
22I thought Stella's dress looked so cheap! I mean, it was fairly well constructed and fit well, but when was the last time that dress would have been in style?
I, too, absolutely loved the navy blue dress (it's the second picture up there). I would wear it in a heartbeat. I was a little disappointed that Stella's dress got mention over that one.
23Happy with the dress that won (if not the designer himself), I totally thought Terri was robbed of being in the top three. Her navy blue cocktail dress was totally Bluefly material. Oh well. Sorry to see cute little Wes go home, but I won't miss his man shorts.
24I think what Leanne was wearing on the runway was WAY better than the dress she made!
25And on that note--who is Heidi wearing in the promos? To me, this is a hideous PINK, SHORT, TIGHT & SHINY (ref Nina=cheap) looking dress she has on. Anyone know who this is by?
LOVED Natalie Portman!!!
26yeah. project runway has not been the same for me since santino. he set the bar so high for me that i haven't found another designer i have liked as much since the second (i think) season. but yeah.. i definitely think stella's dress was wayyyy worse than wesley's. i know his had some problems but hers was soooo ugly. i would wear wesley's effed up dress over hers any day. and i hope he is dating daniel. they would be the hottest couple ever. it's so true that the eye candy level has gone way down since wesley left. hopefully daniel stays awhile or i'm completely screwed in that department.
27Kenley was robbed, sure Suede wwas creative but the dress looked bad. Also my fave was Terri's (the navy blue one) and I was shocked when she wasn't in the top 3 I also liked Blayne's a lot. Stella's was hideus.
28How on earth was Stella's dress in the top 3 while Terri didn't get recognition for her beautiful dress? Stella needs to go home and Wesley needs to come back.
29I agree with the above comments - in what universe was Stella's simple, boring, and unattractive gold dress Top 3 worthy? I loved Terri's navy blue and Jennifer's orange and grey. I thought they were far more interesting and creative than Stella's. It's beyond me how she got into the top 3...
And Wesley was so cute! He will be missed.
30you know whati's interesting, there were a few great designs that they barely showed anything of. the blue dress was really really nice and no one saw it being made or even saw it more than for about 2 seconds on the runway. it's just odd how they edit things sometimes, but i guess that's the fun of the show?
31my baby is made of leatha, my drapes are leatha...hands down the funniest thing so far
32i was actually suprised by suede's dress. i was expecting something terrible, like last week's, but it actually looked pretty great. im so sad about wesley!! i loved him! and it wasnt his fault that the fabric sucked! i kind of liked leanne's though... ah! and wesley is dating daniel! how cute!
33Maybe I don't get fashion either but I was totally surprised that Suede's dress was the winner. I was surprised they chose it over Kenley's. As for Stella, she seems to whine a lot about the challenges.
34i actually really liked that blue dress too. i thought it would sell the best on bluefly and it was just so classy and pretty
35Suede took some risks but his dress is still a little too whimsical for my taste. Kenley's dress is well-made and all, but for a cocktail dress, it bores the hell outta me. It's just a pencil dress with a ruffly collar. My favorite was Blayne's pink and black number; the hot pink scared me a bit but he made it completely modern and wearable - I'm surprised it didn't get into the top 3. Stella's dress looked like a hooker outfit...soooo distasteful.
