The Dark Knight is rated PG-13 and a lot of friends and relatives with kids have asked me if it's too scary for the little ones. Though it's a superhero story about Batman — and lots of kids love Batman — I think I would've been frightened by it if I were a kid!
It makes me remember when my parents would warn me that a movie was too scary, or would deny me access to one, even when I felt confident I could handle it. I was just a little kid at the time but I remember peeking through my bedroom door, furious that my parents were watching Gremlins while I was supposed to be sleeping, only to have seven nights of nightmares in a row as a result. I also sneaked a look at The Lost Boys at one point — during the scene when the noodles turn into worms, I recall — which sent me scrambling for safety under my covers.
What movies did you see that were probably too scary for you at the time?

Versace
Michael Kors
True Religion
I remember watching Jurassic Park in the theaters. I think there was way too much marketing to kids for that movie. I was ten years old and my mom had to take me to another movie while my 7 year old brother stayed in Jurassic park because he loved it
I was such a
But, she had to run back and forth between those two films making sure we were ok. (We lived in a
really small town).
1Gremlins scared me big time!
And first Batman was scary too.
But Freddy K. was the guy I was mostly afraid of-I couldn't sleep for some time as I was sure I'll meet him in my dreams!
2The "Night on Bald Mountain" sequence in Fantasia was far too scary for me as a kid!
3Oh yeah, Gremlins did it for me too!! The first three Jaws movies come to mind too...they scared me, but I loved them, so I watched them anyway.
4The Gremlins for sure! Also Harry and the Hendersons (ok i know i'm lame!) and The Escape from Witch Mountain! Also I thought the E-woks from Star wars and the E-wok movie were terrifying!
5Actually the first time I saw Gremlins 2 my cousin was making me laugh telling me my laugh sounds like one of them so I didn't actually associate it with being a scary movie, oddly enough. I was scared of the little bits of Freddy Kruger movies I saw, Troll 2 (which isn't even known for being a good movie but it freaked me out when I saw it as a kid), Killer Klowns from Outerspace (the first time I ever even thought of Clowns as being scary), The Witches, Poltergeist 3 and 1 and I was probably also freaked out by movies I never even saw, but was aware of.
6Oh, and cmd0610's posting reminds me. I also saw Ewok movies as a kid and the big gorille like creature and some reptile like beings from those movies also freaked me out. Same for Darth Vader and Chewbacca.
7I watched the original Exorcist when I was 11 or 12...I couldn't sleep for a week w/out having nightmares. Also, I was really scared of ET when I was a kid. My brother knew it scared me, so he would threaten to make me watch it if I was being annoying.
8An American Werewolf in London.
9Probably shouldn't have been watching it, but Pennywise from It always scared the crap outta me. Him and his sharp ass teeth.
10Movies didn't/don't scare me. I always made my friends watch horror movies haha. IT was one of my favorites. Also, I loved anything with zombies.
11Yea I'll agree with those who thought the E-wok movies were scary.
12Amityville Horror was a big one for me and I'm not ashamed to say that I was very afraid of those black ghost things that came to get the bad men in Ghosts.
13Child's Play 1 & 2, 3 Men & a Baby (my dad used to watch the "ghost" scenes in slo-mo!), Ghost, Ghostbusters, ET....I don't like aliens or ghosts!!
14Maximum Overdrive...We had lots of cars growing up. I was over afraid one of them was going to start at any moment and run me down.
15I remember being really freaked out by Mars Attacks! haha
Something about those aliens kept me up at night.
16IT! Holy crud that movie scared me. I was, like, 7 when I watched it in a hotel room while my family and I were on vacation. I am scared of clowns to this day!
17The Dark Crystal. The Skeksis were super creepy, and even the good guys (the Mystics) were scary.
18I hate clowns due to "It" I was afraid of tim curry for a while there too until I saw Clue and rocky horror. That monster thing that had the parents in the cage in the ewoks movie WAS scary! The "nothing wolf"in the Neverending story freaked me out. I also agree that Gremlins was scary. The witches also frightened me. And while I love the adventures of Baron von Munchousen (sp?) The angel of death has always frightened me.
19Child's Play. I still can't watch scenes from those movies without freaking out. I haven't seen a complete one ever, they just scare me.
20OMG! I forgot IT, that movie freaks me out to no end. I can't watch it in one sitting.
21The Exorcist and The Howling freaked me out...but I watched them anyway!
22My dad let me watch the Exorcist when I was 7 or 8. I didn't understand it for the most part but it still scared the crap out of me.
23'Twister' scared the living crap out of me.
24You know what, I was really scared of Heathers the first time I saw it. Now it's one of my favorites!
25I forgot about the clown from IT, and I didn't even watch the whole thing back then. I saw the scene in the bathroom with the clown popping up and changed the channel right away. I only saw more scenes in the last year and am glad I didn't see them when I was a kid. And the "nothing wolf" from Neverending Story I have to agree with too.
26omg i was so scared of gremlins too!!
i was also scared of mars attacks, ernest scared stupid, and IT.
27I forgot how scared "IT" made me. I remember watching it at a sleep over and secretley covering my eyes!
28Jaws - I saw it when I was 5 and was scared of water after that!
29Poltergeist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Alien, and Halloween. I hated scary movies as a child, but my parents watched them. I hid behind the chair.
In recent history, Scream gave me nightmares for 2 weeks. I'll NEVER have French doors in my house because of that first scene! LOL.
30Critters . . . after I saw that I swore off scary movies. I think I was 10 or so. I was so afraid of critters, especially the toilet scene, for years afterwards whenever I used the toilet I would flush and run scared a critter was going to come out after me. I still don't watch scary movies and have never seen Gremlins because I know it would scare me, well not now probably but I have no interest.
31Jurassic Park! My brother always made us watch it when we left alone home.
I also remember Gremlins. I think it is still scary.
32'chuckie', when i was 9. i didn't have nightmares though, just a little scary. i saw it again a few months back, and it's so lame! not scary at all
33when i was very little i had nightmares for weeks from the never ending story- i don't know exactly why- wolves i think. to this day i haven't seen it because of the trauma from childhood!
as a teen and adult, i never watched horror movies. they freak me out too much. i tried to be a "big girl" and see scream in the theater but i walked out after the first seen.
34Gremlins! lol funny but scary. i still hate freddy and jason...
35I was terrified of the flying monkeys in the wizard of Oz.
36The only movie that really got to me was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Other than that, I always knew movies were fake. But if you put me in front of America's Most Wanted, there was no chance in hell I was sleeping that night!
37I remember flipping through the channels once and and seeing this movie with Eddie Murphy in it that creeped me out, I think it was called "Evolution" or something and the certain scene has kind of recurred again and again in my nightmares sometimes.
But most movies don't really scare me. I took my brothers to the Dark Knight, and my littlest one, who's usually a wimp, was pretty ok. We all laughed at the pencil scene, haha.
38Nightmare on Elm Street totally freaked me out but I loved it anyhow
39The Exorcist, definitely!!
40The Gremlins and the Poltergeist movies
41Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I don't know what it was about that movie, but it made me feel odd in a bad way so I was afraid to watch it.
Aside from that, i wasn't allowed to watch scary movies...nothing that wasn't rated R bothered me, and I wasn't allowed to see R rated movies...although, i went to a sleep over and saw Cujo and Arachnaphobia. That was fun, the power went out in the middle of the spiders everywhere in the house scene. It was great. I actually think I am ore scared now of scary movies than i ever was. Like, I won't go by myself to see one...(one time i was THE ONLY person in the theater for Jeepers creepers. it wasn't really scary though)
42Jurassic Park! My parents let me watch it at home one time and I was terrified for months that velociraptors would break into my house and eat me. Poltergeist and Batman Forever also scared me, but to a far lesser extent. Signs terrified me to death, even though I was in my early teens when I saw it, but I hate aliens and I was having anxiety issues at the time so it was not smart to watch that movie in theaters.
43I remember being really scared of the first pokemon movie! I was a scardey-cat back then XD
44gremlins defiantely and loads more, there were loads of movies that scared me when i was a kid. i loved lost boys though, 1 of my faves
45The Stay-Puft marshmallow man from Ghostbusters.
46I'm with you on the Lost boys worms part...that freaked me out for ages, and I remember really inspecting Chinese food after that movie. My older brother made me watch Hellraiser when I was really young too. No wonder I really dislike scary movies now.
47i remember being scared in the friday the 13th (ch-ch-ch,ha-ha-ha) series as well as nightmare on elm street. it's so funny to see them now as they are so NOT scary. i was always intrigued by scary movies and i still am! love them! i watched the exorcist when i was way too young and i am still scared by that one.
48Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. Not that Labyrinth was terribly scary, but it took me years to get over my fear of David Bowie.
49One of the Poltergeist movies. That one where ghosts come out of the mirrors. I had mirrored closet doors and I was scared of them for ages after that.
Dumbo and Pinocchio scared me when I was really young too.
