Many thought that breaking Spider-Man 3's record for the biggest opening weekend ever would be difficult, even for The Dark Knight. But the much-hyped and critically adored sequel to Batman Begins shattered many records over the weekend — including Spidey's.
Earning an estimated $155.4 million, Bruce Wayne and gang smashed box office records for the biggest single-day gross in history and the biggest opening weekend for an IMAX release.
According to Variety, Mamma Mia! also broke records by "narrowly beating Hairspray to become the top opener for a musical," earning $27.5 million over the weekend.
That is a lot of money that people spent at the movies this weekend. What did you see? And how many times?

I saw both Mamma Mia and the Dark Knight!
1Mamma Mia was a little disappointing for me, but i had very high hopes, but The Dark Knight is the best movie i have seen in a while, i jumped out of my seat 3 times and almost cried twice!
I saw The Dark Knight and Priceless. I was seriously dissappointed in The Dark Knight and would have walked out but I didn't want to leave my friend alone.
2Dark Knight was great! I could have used a little more Bruce Wayne ... but the acting, special effects, everything was awesome! Batman is the best superhero! I will see it again in imax for sure!
3The Dark Knight was absolutely amazing, and I was not initally excited about the movie at all. My boyfriend wanted to see it desperately and I agreed to tag along. Now mind you, I'm not a fan of the comic book movie genre (except for the X-men movie, I thought they were fun) and the Batman Begins did nothing for me, but this movie was so well executed by the cast and director that I feel that not only does Heath Ledger deserve an Oscar nom for his role as the Joker, Christopher Nolan deserves a nod for his direction and the whole movie for Best Picture. It was a great movie that goes above the basic comic book movie to a crime thriller that kept me peeking through my fingers at parts.
4I saw The Dark Knight at the midnight showing. It was a mistake on the part of us old people who had to go to work the next morning. The theater was filled with high school and college kids on summer break. My friends kept grumbling that they wished the movie was rated R so all these kids wouldn't be there.
I also saw Hellboy II at the theaters. Then I watched Labyrinth (yes, the one with David Bowie) and Clueless at the park for free. We may not have drive-in theaters, but they do show theaters on big screens at various parks in town. I thought four movies in one week was pretty good!
5I got to see The Dark Knight after all, but only once and I really would like to go back and see it in the IMAX theater. I didn't realize how much the Joker speaking creeped me out until I was checking out the comcast site for the movie. I think I know what DVD I want for Christmas, so I hope it has good extra features (even though I'm guessing of course it will).
6I watched The Dark Knight and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not a comic book fan at all but I thought the movie was well-made: good acting, good story, good visuals, etc.
7I saw the Dark Knight twice this weekend! One of the best movies I ahve seen thus far this year.
8I saw Batman and loved it! One of the best movies I've seen in awhile.
9The Dark Knight was AWESOME in IMAX! I'd totally see it again! loved it!
10I saw the Dark Knight and already want to see it again. I saw it at a 10am show in this artsy theater, so it was mostly empty and the rest were older people. Was great, except they took away all the awesome nerdy trailers and put indie ones- they totally didn't fit the feel of the movie! So now I want to see it in IMAX and I also want to see it in AMC for the previews...yes I am nuts.
11i saw dark knight twice
12and i refuse to see the movie version of momma mia!
13i will only see it on broadway
I saw The Dark Knight on Friday and it was wonderful. I am so glad it beat Spiderman, as Batman is a true superhero and spiderman is not. My mom saw Mamma Mia and I will see the Dark Knight at the IMAX next week.
14I must have been under a rock i wanna see the dark knight in imax now i have to look that up!!!
15I almost never see movies at first-run theaters, but I made an exception for Dark Knight. I am a big fan of the Dark Knight comic series, and I am super excited to finally see comic movies do the grittier material. It was SO satisfying to see the true Joker character come to life!
Also, how killer was that Watchmen trailer??
16The ferry scene got to me...
17Good movie, still taking it all in.
ranksubjugation - I completely agree with the Watchmen trailer. Can't wait to see it.
I saw both movies and loved them both!
18i saw the dark night.
19it was BEYOND amazing...heath ledger was deliciously creepy as the joker
Mamma Mia was fun, not great, but fun.
20I saw this last night & thought it was great! I'd love to see it in IMAX! The Joker and Two-Face were amazing. I will definitely go see this again.
21The Dark Knight was incredible and I keep saying that on a scale of 1 to 10 it broke the goddamn f*cking scale.Literally it was incredible. The joker scared the sh*t out of me and might I add this isn't a horror film.I literally pulled my bag for dear life and almost dropped the box of dots.I only saw Heath once on the short 2 seconds of the movie that was calmer and kept thinking o my god its really him. i agree that both ledger and nolan deserve some nominations.fantastic!!!!!!!!
22I saw The Dark Knight AND Mamma Mia. I thought both were great.
23Heath, Christian, and even Aaron had amazing performances.
My b/f and I rented "Next Friday" through Total Access and saw that Friday. I've never seen the movies and he had to convince me to watch them, but for what they are (stoner comedies), they're pretty funny. On Saturday night, we watched Dark Knight. The movie theater we go to is normally not crowded at all, but it was packed to the gills with people (the last time this happened, The Departed came out and I expected the theater to be crowded because it's near Boston!). I'm not a big fan of superhero comics or anything but found Dark Knight to be really good. Heath Ledger was terrifying as the Joker and he really carried the film.
Oh, it was random to find out that the Friday movies and Dark Night have something in common. During Dark Knight's ferry scene, one of the prisoners looked oddly familiar, and then I realized, it was Debo (Tommy "Tiny" Lister)! He seems to be pigeonholed into these prisoner roles--I would like to see him play other roles. But for the record, his role in Dark Knight, albeit a short one, was very moving...
24Dark Knight. Once.
I really liked it a lot. I thought CB and HL did great jobs. I jumped out of my seat more than once.
25i lovedd Dark Knight. i shouldnt have seen it at 11:45 pm after a long day at the beach because i was so tired, but none-the-less it was amazing and Heath was superb
26I saw the Dark Knight and I thought it was amazing! Best movie I've seen in a loong time...maybe ever?
27That Watchmen trailor looked awesome, the Brad Pitt movie, not so much.
28Dark Knight on Friday. Best "comic book" movie by far.
29I finally saw Sex and the City! My lovely fiance took me after I finished giving him a whirlwind tour of the series. He actually likes the show! And we both enjoyed the movie, too.
30hahaha SDTransplant my brother kept saying hey its debo. haha. i didn't think anyone else would know who that was, but needless to say it was clear who carried the film.
31I went to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight,
32then took the boyfriend to go see it on Friday night.
It's a fantastic movie and I really hope Heath Ledger gets that Oscar nom.
He truly deserves it, his role was amazing.
And Christian Bale as Batman is just downright sexy.
I'm mildy pissed off at the people who said that high school kids and college kids shouldn't have gone to 12 o'clock premiere. Firstly, I'm in college and have an internship and commute to the City every workday; I (and the friends I went to see it with), like all the adults there, had to get up for work the next day. Teenagers and kids in their early 20's are the people keeping the comic book industry alive these days. Be happy that we're willing to waste 3 dollars on 12 pages that fuels DC, Marvel and other publishing houses. DC wouldn't be allowing people like Nolan to make "comic book" movies if it weren't for "us kids".
TDK was amazing! I'm with all those people who said Heath deserves an Oscar nod.
33I just got back from a 1:30 pm showing on a monday and it was PACKED. my husband and I loved it. I thought Heath was amazing and Maggie Gyl was WAY better then Katie Holmes. I can't believe what happened with her character, but oh well, it made sense for the plot!!! I LOVED Aaron Eckhardt too, he is just amazing imo. Cristian Bale was good bc he makes sense as a billionaire playboy. haha
34I saw The Dark Knight on Friday evening and then went to the Sunday matinee to see Mamma Mia.
I really enjoyed myself at Mamma Mia. And a word of advice: take your moms. It's a fun experience to share.
35I went absolutely movie crazy this weekend. I saw a midnight screening of the Dark Night on Friday morning. That night I saw Gonzo (it was to be Dr. Thompson's 71st birthday that day). Today I went to a quickie of Hellboy II, and stayed for Wall-E. Whew. I think that is as many movies as I have seen the whole year thus far. Good stuff.
36duh, its the best movie of the summer
37I saw Dark Knight on Sunday and I am probably going to see it again, but I still need to see Mamma Mia.
38I also take offense to the college kids comment, I'm in college, I'm well over the age required for seeing a rated R movie, but I'm still considered a child? That's a little childish for you to say. You're right, it is summer so that gives us the right to go to the movies and enjoy our summer.
39LOVED dark knight- heath was amazing, aaron was really good (and is overlooked by many critics) and i'm a big maggie fan although rachel wasn't all that interesting as a character to me.
going to see mamma mia tomorrow with my mom & grandma! looks like fun
sidenote- did anyone see dark knight with a lot of young kids? there were so many 6-10 yr olds in the theater and well, i'm not a parent and i'm not trying to advise anyone, but it's rated pg13 for a reason. why do parents think young kids should watch this?!?!
40I saw the Dark Knight and it was incredible. I will definetly go see it again.
41I third Sweet Poison and mariellynelly. Um, bitter much?
That said, TDK was amazing. Heath Ledger was fantastic as the Joker--while I was watching, I never thought of Heath. It was almost as though the Joker simply walked onto set one day and they decided to film.
Aaron also did a great job. I recognized him from Thank You For Smoking right away because he looks just like my sophomore history teacher.
42I also agree with mariellynelly & the others who took offense to the college kid comment. Even if the movie was rated R, most high school seniors and almost every college student (in other words, over the age of 17) would still have been able to watch Dark Knight so tee0206's argument doesn't make sense. I think that it iss even more odd that someone who considers themselves "old" would want to go to a midnight showing when its obvious that it will probably full of raucous, young fans and comic book geeks.
kmckay - I have also noticed that a lot of younger kids have been going to movies like The Dark Knight, which are not age appropriate. I wouldn't bring anyone under the age of 10 to see TDK because even I almost couldn't handle some of its intense scenes and I'm almost 19! It also infuriates me when people bring babies (I'm talking newborns!) to see a highly anticipated movie like this one. Its so disruptive and annoying, just get a babysitter for a few hours!
