Man, I love me some Robert Downey Jr. casting news, and this one's got me all giddy. Variety is reporting that RDJ will play Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's reimagined version of the old sleuth's story (not to be confused with the comedic Sherlock Holmes story starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell). The article has more details:
Downey emerged as an action star with Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes also will take advantage of his physical skills as the character displays brawn as well as brains.
The basis for the film is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tales, but also the comic book Sherlock Holmes.
Now that I'm envisioning it, this seems like the best possible casting decision for Ritchie's project, especially since, as Variety notes, the image idea of RDJ as action star is still fresh in our minds. He can play Sherlock, and many of you think he should be the one picked to portray a young Hugh Hefner — is there anything this guy can't do? Seriously. I'm asking you.

5Someone can't read. DOWNEY will NOT play Sherlock Holmes. That role belongs to Sacha Baron Cohen. Will Farrell will play Watson. Downey will play the villain, Prof. Moriarty.
6ossurworld, you didn't read it right. There are too different versions of this story being made into movies. Both Sacha Baron Cohen and RDJ will be playing Holmes.
I think it is a great idea. Downey will be perfect in the role!
7haha it cracks me up when people are like YOU'RE WRONG, but didn't read it right themselves. There's TWO Sherlock movies coming out, one with Downey and one with Cohen and Farrell

While I still think it is weird that they are doing two Holmes movies at once RDJ is the perfect person to play this part

11This is disappointing. NO ONE can ever top Jeremy Brett. At the very least it should be "interesting" to see Jr.'s interpretation. Sigh.
Are they modernizing the movies or keeping them in Victorian London?

13I just watched a movie with him in it "Charlie Bennett", he played an alcoholic principle/single-dad. He was amazing in it.
(ps. that movie's pretty good... it's the "Ferris Buehler" for this generation.)
are the majority of you brain dead?. i am willing to bet this version of holmes will not get anywhere close to depicting any stories out of the original canon. if anybody wants to see real acting from an actor who was fully dedicated to the role, a real "becomer" watch granadas sherlock holmes series with jeremy brett. jeremy brett will forever be the definitive sherlock holmes. he was the best and will forever eclipse any further (futile) attempts at the role. long live JB.
