It was almost a year ago that I first caught wind of Kath and Kim, NBC's remake of the hit Australian comedy. Since then, Molly Shannon and Selma Blair have been cast in the leads as a dysfunctional mother-daughter team, and NBC has picked the show to anchor its Thursday night comedy lineup. I started seeing promos for the show over the weekend, and so far, I'm finding them completely delightful.
For one thing, it's great to see Molly Shannon with a sassy, blonde haircut and some seriously out-there clothes. For another, I'm loving the attitude Selma Blair's bringing to her role, falling somewhere between entitled princess and petulant teenager. While the two apparently look very little like their Australian counterparts, maybe they can turn the show into an equally big hit.
The odds may be against this remake — and I mean literally, as Horizon Media has already pegged it as one of the shows most likely to fail this Fall — but if the full episodes can keep the easy humor of these promos, I think it stands a chance. To check them out, just read more.

so what do you do?
-I'm a trophy wife...
1I was so worried that this show would suck, but then I saw the promos. I think it will actually be a winner. It seems that they have been able to take the originial Asutralian nuttiness and translate it for a more American ssensibility. And Selma Blair seems like she will definitely be a scene stealer
2Looking forward to watching in the Fall. I like Selma Blair's attitude!
3i keep seeing commercials for this show and i'm really looking forward to it. i haven't been into comedies lately and i think that this could be the one to do it for me - to get me to watch NBC again
4Kinda reminds me of Ab-Fab.
5I love the dry humor and LOVE that shows are doing away with a laugh track!
This might just be a new fav show of mine.
I loved the original - I'm not sure Molly Shannon's oblivious enough to pull it off.
6I might be missing something, but why is Molly Shannon, age 43, playing the mother of Selma Blair, age 36?
7I thought the promos were kind of funny...
8Bella — because Hollywood is very, very silly.
9It looks all right. I dont get the age thing either bella. Maybe its like soap opera casting.
10haha @ syako.
I saw that on the promo last night and it made me laugh.
I'm actually excited for this one.
11...yikes. This seems really bad compared the the Australian version.
12Maybe I need to watch a whole episode.
I think it's kind of funny that Molly Shannon is playing Selma's mom. I assumed it was kinda purposeful. Regardless, I will check it out for sure.
13I haven't heard of this at all. But I think it sounds like it's got a lot of potential! I'll check it out for sure!
14My friend has the two first seasons of the Australian version on DVD. As much as I like Selma Blair, I'd rather see the original.
15It actually looks pretty funny but its weird that there is only a small age difference between Molly Shannon and Selma Blair.
16Wait, Selma Blair is 36!?!?!?!?!? No way.
17I know! She doesn't look like she's over 30! I really wanna see this
18In the Australian one, the actors are the same age, so maybe the casting was on purpose.
19I'm so glad the sugar staff is on top of the weirdness of hollywood casting: that's the first thing that popped into my head! Good for Selma Blair, not as good for Molly Shannon. Oh well, happens all the time. I think Adam Brody's mom on the OC was only 9 years older than him.
20LMAO! "Would it make you feel better if you got up and made us some nachos?" I'll have to check this out.
21I saw a commercial for this show recently and it looks hysterical! I thought they were playing sisters not mother/daughter lol. I can't wait to watch this show.
LOL sy - loved that!!
22Looks funny, I'd like to see the series
23yeah 36 year-old Blair Beitner as the daughter of Molly Shannon? how could Molly's agent have allowed that??
HOWEVER, as I see from Wikipedia's entry about Mike Nichol's film The Graduate, things haven't changed much:
Dustin Hoffman was playing a 21-year-old college graduate, but was actually 29 during filming and 30 when the film was released. Anne Bancroft, whose character is in her early 40s, was only 6 years older than Hoffman in real life. Similarly, Katharine Ross, who played her daughter, was only 9 years younger than Bancroft.
24k.. this show looks hilarious Lol i smell a new favourite show !
25It looks like Selma is playing someone in her 20s, not her actual age. Love Selma. Love Molly (and boy she looks so much more fit than her SNL days, good for her!) And PSYCHED to see John Michael Higgins but . . . I don't think I'll like the show.
26I'm dying to see this! I love Selma.
27I'll give it a shot b/c usually NBC's comedies are pretty good, but Molly Shannon is just too much. She is a great guest star but I can't see watching her for a full season... I was wondering when I saw the commercial if they were supposed to be mother/daughter b/c I thought they were closer in age. Weird.
28its definitely more hollywood then the australian version.
29Those promos haven't swayed me. The Australian version is much better.
30I can't wait to see this, i've always liked Selma Blair. I need to get Tivo this year for sure!
31I had a feeling you wouldn't be impressed GR
About the age thing, it happens so much and it never ceases to be ridiculous. The first time I convinced my boyfriend to watch Gossip Girl with me and Dan and Rufus were talking he was like, "Wait, did that guy just call that other guy DAD?" And that was the end Gossip Girl for him.
But in this instance it's probably intentional given that, as someone else pointed out, in the original the actresses are the same age.
32I'm Australian....that was weird seeing kath & kim in American form. I wonder if it'll get aired over here? I actually wasn't aware that ours was aired over there.
33Plus i'd also like to add that the beauty of the show is that nothing actually has to make sense (like age differences between actors) the minute you try to make something serious out of it is when you've lost the point of the whole show
Also Australian, This look terrible, KAth and Kim is utterly Australian you can only appreciate the full humour of it when seen in context. The Original Actresses for Kath and Kim were the same age because they were housewives that wrote and starred it.
34Oh my god - this is one of the WORST SHOWS ON TELEVISION, EVER. Everyone connected to this project should be ashamed. This show bears witness to the rapidly increasing decline and fall of the American civilization.
35I LOVE this show!!
