The drive-in movie theater conjures up all kinds of romantic ideas of date night and steamy make-out sessions in old-timey cars. I was lucky enough to grow up in a town with a drive-in, and my Summer weekends were full of two-for-the-price-of-one screenings, huge tubs of popcorn and extra-large Dr Peppers, and lots of family-friendly movies under the stars.
Drive-ins are definitely still out there; this site has a pretty comprehensive list. But in these modern times with Netflix, iTunes, and OnDemand, I'm wondering if people are still going — or if you've ever even had the chance?

The last and I think only drive in I ever went to was a double feature of "The Apple Dumpling Gang" and "Candleshoe." (A Jodie Foster classic.) I wore my footed P.J.s and feel asleep about 5 minutes into the second movie. I loved it then. Not so sure I would like it now.
I've never had one around to go to but that would be fun if they were playing a movie I want to see, doesn't matter whether it's and old or recent movie.
I saw Ratatouille at a drive in last summer. It was great!
There are two drive-ins within an hour of my home, and we've been to both numerous times. Both usually have a double-feature, with the early flick being kid-friendly and the late show being PG-13 or so. Cheap admission, cheap concessions, and we bring lawn chairs, blankets and pillows. SO. MUCH. FUN!
Certain movies are just perfect for the drive-in. Things like Hairspray or Moulin Rouge are just better if you're watching outdoors. Especially if it is during an all-nighter where you get 4 movies for 5 dollars.
Goukas, we have to be about the same age! I too had the footy pajamas and fell asleep. Mom, however, used to bring a little red and white potty along so we didn't have to use the nasty one there.
...mmm. The whole potty thing is pretty nasty too, ain't it?
But the drive-in is still loads of fun!
I used to go as a kid. I was outfitted in footed pj's and fell asleep in the back.
i love the drive in
When I was really little I went my one and only time. Oddly enough it was Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. My sister went to sleep, but of course I was terrified to go to sleep. We too had our pj's on dcfashionista. I think they were sure we would go to sleep, but they brought me to a movie where a guy was killing kids in their sleep. My parents were so smart.
In the summer of 1961 my step-grandmother got me a blind date with my future husband. We double-dated and went to a drive-in movie. Then after we were married and had children, many times we would take the kids and go to the drive-in to enjoy a movie - that was way before cable-tv or satelite. Brings back lots of good memories.
I love drive ins!! I went to one long time ago and saw Titanic. I need to go back, their fun and cheaper!
Drive Ins are the best (and thanks for reminding me, Buzz, to go to the one in KS when I'm home)! I will say, however, whenever I've gone to a movie at a Drive In I end up talking and drinking (um, soda) more than watching the movie.
Until I was like 10 years old, there were only 2 occasions that I ever went to an indoor theater, the rest were drive-ins. With a large family, we just loaded up in the station wagon and went. I remember standing there, with my arms straight out, holding my breath, so that my mom could spray us with bug spray. Then we'd lay out on the hood in sleeping bags and watch the movie.
there's a drive-in about 20 min from my house but I haven't been yet (the "real" movie theatre is the same distance in the opposite direction, so I really have no excuse!)
I went once in college to see a double feature at a film festival, but that's the only time. They recently started one up here at the top of a parking garage and I've been meaning to go.
I've never been to a drive-in theatre, but I want to go.
I LOVE THE DRIVE IN! The town I grew up in still has one so whenever I go home me and my mom go. We take the doggies, they sleep in the bag, bring our snacks. I love it so much. We used to go all the time in high school, it was such a fun Date thing. I wish they would come back.
My dad said when he was young and living in Hawaii they had Walk ins. They were just regular theaters with seats but outdoors. So cool!
i just went with my girls last weekend
it was so much fun
I just went to the drive in. I got to see The Hulk and Iron Man for my nephews birthday!!! I am trying to get my friends to go but its a bit far for them.
I grew up in a town that had two drive in movies. I, too, remember going to movies in my footed pjs when I was a toddler and then later hanging out with my high school friends in the summers. We currently live in a town that has a drive in and though we don't go as often now, I do have fond memories of taking my daughter and her friends to the drive in to see some great summertime double features.
I go to the drive in at least twice every summer
There's one right around the corner from my house! When the weather is just right, it's even possible to tune in to a movie, although it's very fuzzy, right at home. I usually end up going an average of 5 times a summer. In fact, I saw 4 last year before school was over.
My dad used to be assistant manager, and eventually manager, of a drive-in and theater in a fairly small town from before I was born until my junior year in high school. I would go every weekend to watch movies and when I was old enough it was my first job. I would either sell tickets or work in the concession stand at both the drive-in and theater. I have many fond memories of those places.
love the drive ins! they're almost extinct though. sigh.
Drive Ins are the best! My first was a double feature of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Three Men and a Baby when I was like 8. Aw, that makes me wistful.
Ha, I went just last Friday. I saw Get Smart, snacked and got a bit boozed. It's just fun, kick back and chill, a different atmosphere than at home or a regular theater. Yeah, kinda hard to hear the words, but still fun for a big group of friends.
Wow! I haven't been to one of these since high school! Back in the day, we'd get a group of about five people together. Whoever had access to the largest land yacht (car) would be the designated drive-in driver. One lucky person would ride shotgun. The others would be concealed in the trunk until we payed for two tickets and were safely inside and parked. I will deny this under oath, of course!
Fun Fun Fun!!! We bring camp chairs and blankets and sit in front of the car and watch the movie. All the yummy concession food and we also bring more to snack on. I love it. My hubby and I go with another couple and we have a blast. We have taken our daughter a few times. Hopefully this weekend if the weather cooperates to see Wall-e and the Hulk (again) Drive-in's rule!
Hell yeah! It was really fun when I went as a kid, I remember seeing Indian in the Cupboard one time. And then I went last November to see August Rush, but it was so cold outside that I couldn't concentrate on the movie (we were sitting on the flatbed of a truck).
There is one just south of here and my hubby took me to it a few months ago. It was so much fun. We really want to go back with friends!
I love that they play the sound track through the radio so you can listen in surround sound in the comfort of your own car! The food was fun too. They had Dippin' Dots. Super fun.
I've always loved the drive in. When I was little my mom and I would go on Friday nights as our girls night during the summer. While there aren't as many around now I totally still love the experience, there's nothing like it. I remember when they transitioned from those speakers you had to attach to your window to hear the movie. God drive ins just scream summer nights and where else can you see two movies for five bucks per person?
When I was a kid, yeppers
Ummm... I have never been to one, but I know where a couple of them are. And I was actually talking to a coworker today about plans for the 4th, he's taking his family (wife, >year old baby, 3 year old boy) to the drive in to see Wall-E.
there is one about 30 miles from me and its awesome! I havent been in a few years but my bff and her hubby went just a week ago and enjoyed it as well!
Drive Inns are the best! Sadly the Drive Inn in the city where I live just recently closed. We keep thinking "oh let's go tonight!" and then remembering that it is gone
Sky View Drive Inn was so much fun..
Oops, sorry for the extra ns. I wish we could go back and correct our comments. I'm always making typos
I am so jealous!
I've always wanted to go to one. I really want to go to one now
that I've found out there are two within reasonable distance. Yay!
yes i have been many times, but they closed all the drive in movies in Hawaii. I wish they didnt. =(
My family and I went a lot when I was younger, but now it's not in a safe neighborhood. If you've ever seen the movie Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson and Tupac, it's pretty much like that.
I just went to my first a few weeks ago to see Kung-Fu Panda and Iron Man! It was so awesome, I don't know if I can ever watch a movie inside ever again.
Yay! Bengies! This is right down the street from my Mom's house
I went to one when I was in my 20s, because I had never been before. It was pretty darn awesome. Not the movie: the movie was Bruce Almighty, and it was bad. But the drive-in part was super cool.
no! but i really want to they look so cooooool.
yes a few times. Actually I just found out over the Father's Day weekend that Nic's grandfather owned one at one time. Wish he still did, I'd love it
We didn't have one in my town and I don't drive now so not an option. I hear they're full of 'unsavoury' characters too. I've seen movies outdoors though, like, in parks and so on.
