Late last week, Katy Perry scored a milestone: Her single, "I Kissed a Girl," jumped to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the 1,000th No. 1 hit of the rock era (aka since the release of "Rock Around the Clock" in 1955).
However, catchy as Perry's song might be, hers isn't the "I Kissed a Girl" that I tend to get stuck in my head. No, that would be Jill Sobule's 1995 hit of the same name, which came complete with adorable, candy-colored, suburb-satirizing music video.
Despite fielding lots of e-mails from annoyed fans, Sobule herself says she appreciates Perry's track as "a catchy party song." What about you? Which "I Kissed a Girl" would you rather have on constant rotation?

am i the only one who thinks katy perry's song is kinda bad?
1I liked Katy Perry's song much better. Its catchy and fun to sing along to.
2I don't like either of them.
3I actually like them both! Jill's is more playful and fun and Katy's is just good all around catchy & has a great beat.
4I think both are cheesy, but Katy's really bugs me. It's the anthem for straight girls who break queer girls' hearts so they can experiment while they have boyfriends. DO NOT WANT.
When will we get a song that doesn't have to reassure listeners that it's OK that they smooched a lady, 'cause, you know, they're still straight deep down inside? Annoying.
5I really don't like Katy's version of the song at all. There's a freshness to Sobule's version (the original) that gets totally lost in Katy's. Not to mention I despise heavy synthesizers.
I don't get the same interpretation of Jill Sobule's version that you seem to, Bella. It's quite different from Katy's. More about two women who come to realize that there's other options out there.
6They are both trying way too hard, and it's so obvious and annoying. Sobule is an embarrassment to Jills everywhere - partly because of her awful haircut!
7Bella, I think I love you.
8Katy's song is catchy and grew on me, but I don't love it. I like that Jill's song is proud but I've always hated it. Unfortunately Jill's I Kissed A Girl is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
And I find it a little bothersome that so much is being read into Katy Perry's. A lot of girls kiss girls just to try it. Nothing wrong with that. It's a silly song, not a serious statement of "I'm so straight but I so want to be gay to be cool". I think some people are reading WAY too much into it.
9They are both sending the stupid message Bella is talking about because in Jill's song or at least the video the two women walk out of their houses pregnant. Katy's song is catchier but I refuse to listen to it because it's not really about "experimenting" but about marketing the lesbian chic thing that is going on now.
10Not really a fan of either. Katy's is catchy, I'll give it that.
11they're both different, jill souble's is more like a fun experiment fun a friend and kate perry's like a daredevil thing
12I remember when the one by Jill came out; I haven't even heard the new one yet. God I feel old.
13katy perry is such a little doll, i love her!
14neither.
15I just hate the song.
16Jill Sobule's song is saccharine and cheesy. Katy Perry's is just bad.
17Not a fan of either, I agree that the experimental "i am so edgy" LUG (lesbian until graduation) trend that some girls go through to get attention has always bothered me. Its not fair to real lesbians, or to the people who have to watch it all go down.
It might be "catchy" but i had to turn it in the car the other day with my 10 year old neice, who exclaimed "i love this song!" and when i asked her what it was about she said "its about this girl who kisses another girl but doesnt want her boyfriend to find out" great......
18I got the same impression that Bella did.
And its not about reading too much into it; she blatantly mentions not caring about the person.
"No, I don't even know your name
It doesn't matter
You're my experimental game"
Well, thats just mean.
Its been my experience that lesbians hate sh*t like that.
And here this chick just gave all those sh*tty attention-wh*re desperate girls an anthem. Great.
19Jill is the original!
20I like the 90's version. I've never seen the video before this, when I saw Fabio I just cracke up. Katy is just commenting on a trend that going on right now so thats cooltoo.
21Jill's. o/` "Dumb as a box of hammers- but he's such a handsome guy." o/`
22Bella-- I was just thinking the same thing about the Katy Perry song this morning when it came on VH1. It seems like it would be the theme song to that Tila Tequila show where she's only "bi" for the attention.
23I like the old one better maybe because it's the one I'm used to. I don't think it's ok to play with anyone's emotions straight or gay and I think if you'd do it to one sex you'll do it to another. So all in all I'm not going to glorify anybody cheating on anybody or using anybody for an experiment.
24See Avatar. I LOVE Katy Perry, have for a while. There are other songs of hers that I prefer, but if I had to pick between the two choices above, Katy all the way. I'm a Katy cat!
25I've never even heard the Katy Perry song but just looking at her annoys me. Jill Sobule forever!
26I have a wierd admiration for Katy Perry (have for a few months) but my friends hate me for liking her and the song.
27But I adore the look of both music videos.
i totally agree with Bella!
28Katy Perry's version is really catchy, but the lyrics annoy me for the same reason as Bella. Maybe if it were clear that she's satirizing the trend, I'd be less annoyed, but it comes off more as taking advantage of it.
My husband, however, LOVES the lyrics. ~rolls eyes~
29Neither! ugh. i hate the one by Katy, but sadly ive cought myself singing along to it!!! AH
