I was thinking recently that Lipstick Jungle was just starting to get good at the end of its short Spring season, and it was a shame the show wouldn't have much buzz going into the Fall. Well, hello, instant buzz: TV legend Mary Tyler Moore is joining the show as a guest star, playing the mother of Wendy Healy (Brooke Shields).
Moore will make her first appearance in the show's Sept. 24 premiere playing Joyce, a high-powered businesswoman who — now retired — pushes Wendy to reconsider her work-life balance. According to NBC:
Having blazed a trail for working women back in the 1970s and 1980s, Joyce challenges Wendy's idealistic notion of "having it all" — leaving her overachieving daughter in a tailspin.
Few people know working women on TV better than Moore, who said in NBC's press release that "It's been great fun to watch the strong female characters of Lipstick Jungle go at it week after week." Granted, if I would have picked one NBC character who could be Moore's daughter, it would have been 30 Rock's Liz Lemon — but that might have been a little too on-the-nose.
Lipstick didn't quite live up to my expectations in the Spring, but a lot of that could have been blamed on the writers' strike, so I'd love for the show to come out strong in the Fall. This casting news seems like one step in that direction. What do you think?

I really, REALLY wanted to like Lipstick Jungle, but the show just left me flat. It just doesn't have the pop and sizzle of Sex and the City, and nothing in the storyline(s) has struck me as particularly innovative or compelling.
Earlier this year I dutifully TiVo-ed every episode of the season, and when I found myself waiting two, three, sometimes four days to watch it, it occurred to me, "Maybe I'm just not that into it."
1I can't get past MTM's face - it looks like she's spread Elmer's glue all over it and let it dry before she went out. Brooke looks like she's going to be trying that next and she's way too young to be looking that ragged.
Sorry, couldn't bear the show.
2Eep! "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"? Now THAT was good tv! I'm glad to be able to watch Mary on television again, even if only for a short time.
I wasn't instantly addicted with the first season of "Lipstick Jungle", but I have felt that way about a lot of first seasons of tv shows. I can definitely sense the potential in this one, so I'm going to stick it out for a bit longer.
3I enjoyed Lipstick Jungle. It was a lot of eye candy - great clothes and homes.
4I really like Lipstick Jungle and I can't wait til it returns
5I recently re-watched all the episodes that aired (one a night for a week or so). I liked it enough and hope that it comes back with vengeance, especially since Cashmere Mafia won't be there to fill our post-SATC women/fashion/glamor fix.
6I HAVE THE SAME TOO JUST LIKE sfprgirl said in comment
7i'll give it another try, because it did lack something in the 1st season. but i was comparing it to the book, which is always better.
8I'm glad Cashmere Mafia didn't make it. I think I only watched about 10 minutes of that one! And I love Lucy Liu!
I liked the show and will definately be checking it out again in september.
9I liked it enough in the spring to give it another shot this fall.
10I think LJ has a chance of becoming a fun show, but it hasn't totally grabbed me yet.
I don't watch Lipstick Jungle, but now you've got me wishing for MTM on 30 Rock!
