The onset of Summer also means the return of my Five Questions series, in which I take a look back at the most recent seasons of some favorite TV shows and pose some hypothetical questions about their future. Today's questions are for Grey's Anatomy, which will start its fifth season in the Fall.

- Mere and Der are together — now what? Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has said she wanted to get Meredith and Derek together (and permanently) by the fourth season finale. So, she did, with an elaborate Mere-in-a-field-with-candles stunt that could probably make even the stoniest skeptic weep. But if they're really together for good, where's the tension? The last time they were happy together, they did things like complain about snoring, and frankly, that doesn't make for very good television.
- What's with Callie and Hahn? With a passionate kiss in the season four finale, Erica and Callie seemed destined to be the first same-sex couple to grace the Grey's screen. While I'm a little surprised the writers took Callie — an avowed lover of sex with men — in that direction so fast, the storyline could be a great opportunity for two characters who I think are often underused. As After Ellen pointed out, the two would be the only two lesbian or bisexual regular characters currently on network television. I'm curious to see where their relationship will go.
- Will the ratings rebound? Grey's started the year battling and occasionally beating CSI for the best ratings of any scripted show on TV, but after the writers' strike, the show's ratings took a hit. Granted, the show's drop wasn't much bigger from what other shows experienced; the strike hurt everyone. But Grey's seemed to lose some of its buzz along with the ratings. Was it just a blip that will lead the show to come back stronger than ever in the Fall — or is it a significant sign that interest is waning?
- Will Izzie say farewell? Some have speculated that Katherine Heigl's recent negative comments about Grey's were an effort to get out of her contract, which is said to extend through 2009-10. And, indeed, giving Izzie control of the clinic in the fourth-season finale could be a way to get her out of the everyday surgical goings-on. Will Izzie be with the show till the end, or will season five be the end of Heigl's tenure at Seattle Grace?
- Will this season set the stage for the show's eventual end? These days, a show that runs more than five seasons — much less more than six or seven — is a relative rarity on network television. And in the case of Grey's, the story has a natural end: whenever the core group of doctors wraps up the residency program. So, how quickly will that end come for Grey's? Will the fifth season just be another stop along the way, or will it set in motion the storylines and relationships that will help tie everything up a couple of years down the line?
Three more questions, so read more.

i really want this show to get good again, but i don't think it's going to happen.
1Just bc they are together doesn't mean it will be boring... marriage/relationships are never boring... Katherine Heigl would be dumb to leave, in my opinion, she has had decent success at movies but alas a movie star she is not.
2If all the talking that Katherine Heigl has done is an attempt to break her contract, then writers just go on and do it, because all I can think of is good riddance. I love Katherine Heigl and the movies she's done, but in Grey's all I can see is an annoying, self-righteous brat! I don't think it would be a detriment to Grey's if she wasn't there or they lessened her presence.
Also I agree with Lauren, marriage/ relationships are never boring all because Mer/Der are together doesn't mean conflict can't arise between them.
3I hope Heigl leaves, I hate her character and I can't stand her in real life either, so good riddance. Derek and Meredith are boring now, I'm over their whole story line.
4I agree with Lauren. I think that Katherine Heigl thinks more of her self than she actually is and is really arrogant. Shes already been kinda typecast in the movies that shes done, and while they're good, shes no Angelina Jolie. But as for Grey's, I really like the show and I hope that it can get its stride back in the fall. It will be interesting to see what happens.
5I, too, hope that Grey's gets good again...but I'm also skeptical. Good question about Callie and Hahn; I'm curious to see where that relationship goes. Seriously, I wouldn't miss Izzie a bit.
6you know, i think that these are all good things to think about. i wonder what will happen with mer-der. remember back to 'who's the boss' when there was all that tension with tony and angela, and once they got together, the show went down hill.
as for the ratings thing - i think that during mid-season the show tends to rebound and then it's a guessing game. the strike really messed things up becuase i was really getting into the show again after not watching it for a while right before the strike, and then once it was off, i kind of lost my interest for a bit..until the last episode or 2
i kind of wish that they would just let katherine go. it's hard because it's obvious that she thinks that she's a star and shouldn't be on a show that she's not the lead - and well...let her go and see if she can swim on her own. the movies that she's been in are all the same, so unless she branches out and shows us that she's more dynamic, then there's really no point in her being soo noticed anymore right?
7I remember watching Grey's episode after episode because I couldn't get enough. This season wasn't as good as the previous three. Perhaps it was due to the Writer's Strike. I hope so. As for Katherine, if she doesn't want to be in the show, fine. To be honest I'm tired of hearing her complain about it. She should be grateful to be a part of Grey's cast. This show made her.
8I don't watch Grey's as much anymore. The show got too serious. It used to be funny. It used to be quick witted. Now it is too serious too much drama now...it has gone E.R. If I wanted to see tragedy I would just watch the news.
9I think if they somehow strengthen Derek's storyline rather than Meredith - she's pretty whiney and dull - things might pick up. So far, except for the whole still-had-a-wife thing, he's been too easy for her to love. Don't need to make him mean or have a crisis, but a brain surgeon should be a little more complex.
The lesbian storyline does feel rushed, but they both are terrific actresses so it'd be worth developing.
And Heigl is just fluff. Let her go and have the other residents grow up a little bit.
101. I'm glad Mer & Der are together now. I don't think I could take another season of the same ol' repeated torn love bit.
112. Hate the Callie/Haun story-line. Seems SO forced to me (similar to the whole Izzie/George love..thing).
3. I doubt ratings would soar much unless they really came out of the gate with some good punches. I think they could do really well this season if they put forward all their best material to wrap it all up once and for all.
4. I don't mind Izzie OR Katherine Heigl, so I'd be sad to see her go.
5. See #3. Although I think they might do one more after the 08-09 season.
I think that George and Lexie are going to be the next tension filled love story. Which maybe means that Mer & Der will take a back burner and be the Izzie's of next season - I would SO be ok with that. All the other characters are so much better anyway.
But as long as the old Christina is back, I will be happy! and more Addison cameos/bring her back!
12Izzie used to be one of my favorite characters but they really have written a crappy part for her the last two seasons. Pretty much after Denny died it was like they stopped trying for her character. That said, I've read that Katherine can be difficult to work with so I wouldn't be suprised to learn that this is her own doing.
I agree that there should be more Addison. I wasn't the biggest fan of her when she was on the show but really missed her when she was gone. I'd love to see Burke back too. The guy made a mistake (I'll be it a bad one) and he's still a good actor.
I think George and Lexie will actually be cute together, but poor George just gets passed around that hospital...
13it might be a good time to end. I will definitely miss mcdreamy if it happens though
14Honestly, I thought this was a very strong season compared to last. Especially the eps post-strike. And who needs Heigl? If she doesn't want to be on the show they should just phase her out. Why keep someone who clearly doesn't want to be there?
15Please bring Dr. Burke back we really miss him...........
Everyone deserves to have a second chance........
Ms. Rhimes did a great job in creating his character, we want to see more of him........it would really be nice if we see him back....
