I've been giggling all morning over this story from The Guardian that rounds up several slang terms (both British and more universal) for the remote control. Personally, I go with good ol' "remote," but I always found it endearing when my grandma called it "the clicker" — and downright hilarious when I heard someone call it "the wand." Of all the options in the story, my favorite is the adorable term "the buttons," which I'd probably start using if my boyfriend wouldn't find it so weird. What do you call your remote?

The Remote
My bf always says "where's my 'mote?" which I think its really cute.
i used to call it 'the clicker' but now it's just THE REMOTE in our house
Totally going to start calling it buttons.
I say remote, but my little brother and sister call it the controller.
spanish: el control- which translates to "the control" ajjaja. but.. i think that the time's i have said it in english i say "can u pass me the remote" jajajaj
We called it the clicker when I was growing up, but now I say remote.
I call it the clicker and sometimes even clicky
Every once and awhile I'll revert to calling it a 'clicker' but mostly I call it a remote.
Remote, but I do love "buttons!"
Good ol' remote
The remote, but I've also heard it called 'the controller' in our house!
My mom calls it the clicker, so my lil sis picked up on that and calls it the clicker as well. My dad on the other hand calls it the remote.
I have a friend who calls it "the command"
The wand? Really?
bluesarah, my Dad calls it "the mote" too!
He also used to say "whose got THE POWER??" lol. funny funny man.
when my sister was little, she couldn't say remote or control, so she just called it "the troll". that's stuck, and even though i'm 28 and she's 23, we still call it "the troll". haha
My grandparents call it "the plunker" which always cracked me up. I stick to Mote or Remote.
I call it The Remote but my husband calls it The Rock. He always says to me, "Hand over The Rock."
I call it the clicker, my hubby who is younger than me calls it the remote. is it a generation thing i wonder? i am 34 he is 27
I remember having to get up and change the TV.........
Flipper all the way for me, probably because that's what my parents called it as I grew up.
The remote.
At my house, it's the "Teddy" as I invariably find it curled up under my boyfriend when he's sleeping, like a teddy-bear.
I call it the "channel changer". My roommate freshman year of college thought I was weird and I thought the same of her calling it the "clicker".
That is so cute, julsiesf!
It's called the remote, or remote control, in my house. Sometimes referred to as the 'thingy', and we often will signal that we want the volume or channel changed by pressing our thumb down a few times as if we were holding the remote.
The remote for me!!!!!!!
hahaha the wand
I call it the clicker, which I didn't think was strange until my ex boyfriend made a big deal about it every time I said it. One of my good friends and her family call it the "twanger," which I think is just nonsensical and silly.
I call it the remote.
I have always called it "the button," which is what my family calls it. And, I didn't get made fun of about it until my final year of college. Apparently no one thought it was strange until I moved away. Now, because of all the mockery, I tend to call it "the remote," but every once in a while, I still say, "Hey, where is the TV button?"
haha everyone is so freaked out about "the wand" I grew up calling it that... That's what my parents said so I didn't know it was strange. Now I just call it the remote most of the time.
We call it "the clicker" b/c that's what my dad has always said. But now my nephew started a new trend "the mote".
linb, I use 'thingy' every once in awhile when I can't think of what it's called. The hand gestures work great too!
Me and my brother used to call it "die Macht" (I'm German), which means "the power" or "the force".
Can't remember whether it was actually meant as a Star Wars reference...
Actually, we still call it that whenever we happen to watch TV together, it just doesn't happen that often nowadays.
I've always called it "the controls", which my boyfriend finds a bit odd.
I'm with Mädchen - I'm German, too - and when my brother and I have been kids and where allowed to watch TV we were always fighting about "die Macht" because the remote gives you the power. *g*
I've always called it "the zapper", everyone in my house says it, so i don't think it's odd at all!
@tyffi:
*lol* I'm thinking it might have been a He-Man reference ("Ich habe die Macht von Greyskull!"), but I'm really not sure.
the remote, or the remote control. haha the wand?
the remote always has been always will be!!
The control! No remote involved!
controller....
my sister heard me and thought i was weird but i think its due to my bf and his ps3... (PS3 controller)
r85 you're my hero!!!!! You are the only person I've ever encountered who, like me, calls it "the zapper". I never realized it was at all unusual until I left for college.
A dial, just kidding.
Clicker! But my old roomates daughter used to call it the "Kamoke" so I call it that sometimes too. I remember her searching in the couch for it singing Kamoke Kamoke Kamoke. She's a cool kid
...the button.
when I was little I called it a "dit dot" and it stuck with my family. w/ others I try to call it the remote.
zapper. hmn.
Usually, The remote, but I have used clicker.
For me, remote. For the husband, not a nice word.
We use "remote" however, my dad calls this and the garage opener "the box." As in, "give me the box."
We've tried many ways to deprogram this but to no avail
