If Swingtown is a step outside the box for CBS, the network's other Summer drama, Flashpoint, seems like a perfect fit. It's a cop show, set in a specialized unit that "rescues hostages, busts gangs, defuses bombs, climbs the sides of buildings and talks down suicidal teens," and it should slip in nicely with the network's crime-of-the-week brand.
The show, which premieres July 11, came to CBS under rather unusual circumstances. Picked up during the writers' strike, Flashpoint is a Canadian production and will air simultaneously on CBS and CTV. The show is set entirely in Canada and is based on Toronto's actual Emergency Task Force, which is similar to a SWAT team in the US.
The show stars Enrico Colantoni (of Veronica Mars, among other things) and Amy Jo Johnston (of Wildfire and Felicity), and from the preview clips I've seen, it seems to have a good energy to it. The downside: I doubt its Fridays-at-10 timeslot will do it any favors in terms of getting an audience outside the most hardcore cop-show viewers. Want to check it out? Looks pretty standard but I love Enrico Colantoni so I'll be taping it!
1I love Enrico Colantoni, I love cop shows, plus the Pink Ranger? At the very least I'll be checking out the pilot.
2i'm tired of cop shows. they are so unrealistic! and stereotypical in their portrayal of people of color. whatever.
3Amy Jo Johnson! I love her, I grew up with the Power Rangers and she's actually becoming a pretty good actress.. I might tune into see what it's about and remember the good ol' Kimberly Hart days.
4not my type of show but I love my Vmars and Felicity alums, we'll see...
5I love Enrico! It's nice to see some successful Canadians returning to star in some home grown shows.
It looks to have a really high production cost (compared to our other Canadian tv shows) so I'm interested to see if they can keep that energy (and expense) up for the whole run!
Seeing as it takes place where I live - my fingers are crossed that it does well...it's going to be nice to watch a cop show in familiar territory for me!
6Why is CBS canceling Flashpoint. The program is well written and I enjoy the story line as it direct and to the point.
7The music on Flashpoint is too, too loud. It absolutely drowns out the dialog. You cannot make out what the actors are saying and the whole story line is unattainable. The music did not make this show at all. Find another venue. We stopped looking at show because of this.
