If ever there's a time to get serious about reading, Summer's it! Whether it's because of the longer hours of daylight or the relaxing vacations, lots of folks start stacking up on good reads during the Summer months.
There are some good new books out just in time for beach reading, too. For those of you looking for a little beach-themed escapism, you might check out a couple of this year's books that are set in the Hamptons: How the Other Half Hamptons and LoveHampton. I'm currently having a great time reading my June book club selection, but am definitely adding books that have been getting high praise like The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and the brand new David Sedaris book When You Are Engulfed in Flames. I also like to add nonfiction to my lists, even if it's something a little darker, like Kathryn Harrison's While They Slept.
So, what's on your Summer reading list? Do you prefer light and fun or do you tackle something more challenging when the weather heats up? Anything you've promised yourself you'll pick up and complete before Labor Day?

I have a ton of books I want to read this summer. Right now I am trying to make my way through the long version of the Count of Monte Cristo. I've been working on it for a while!
1I am planning on reading a ton this summer. I've already finished the Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, Ann Patchett's Bel Canto (which was absolutely fantastic), and the Red Tent by Anita Diamant.
2Now I'm on to Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. I wouldn't mind finding a few lighter reads to throw in here, too, but I do my heavy reading during the summer when I don't have as much reading for class.
I just finished "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides on Saturday (for my book club) and started "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" by John Berendt.
I have book club tonight and we'll decide what the next book is. I'm also excited to read the new Sedaris book as well as Augusten Burroughs' latest.
3I wish I had more time to read.
I am currently reading "Sugar Fix: The High Fructose Fallout
That Is Making You Fat and Sick". Enlightening.
4this is starting my first week of work, and since i am only a summer hire and dont get assigned much work all i do is read!! so far ive read: "The Secret" (FINALLY), My Horizontal Life, and Are You There VOdka? Its Me, Chelsea...the last two by Chelsea Handler are HILARIOUS haha. I have soo many more I want to read
5I am currently reading Marley and Me. Next I plan to read Chasing Harry Winston. Then I plan on reading some young adult from Stephanie Meyer, New Moon and Eclipse.
6I just finished Kitchen Confidential which was fantastic and am now reading the Bookseller of Kabul. I think I might start Ann Patchett's other book Run because I loved Bell Canto! Everyone should read that.
7Anything by Haruki Murakami, I got hooked on him after "Kafka on the shore" which is WONDERFUL!
8also "The complete works of William Shakespeare" which my dad got me a while ago since I missed reading it in high school
I currently bought a book called Room for Rent. I am barely starting it & am hoping its good =)
9I'm reading the Buzzsugar June book club selection right now, of course.
Also
reading Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace. I might read Jeffrey Eugenides's Middlesex afterwards. If I can get a hold of the earlier Opposite of Love book you suggested
earlier, I'd like to read that. Otherwise, I might settle back into my nonfiction reads.
10Considering I am taking summer classes, my reading is assigned! But I like what I have read so far:
Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl - Harriet Jacobs (I just finished this one today!)
I have to read a "chick lit" novel for my final paper. I'm not too familiar with that genre, anyone have any good suggestions for what book I should pick?
11I don't actually know. I have some books that I recently noticed I have that I mean to read. When it comes to books I don't own though my library sucks and I would have to request books to find some of my choices.
12I agree with Middlesex and Kafka on the Shore - both are awesome!!!
I'm writing my MA thesis this summer, so I've been re-reading Reviving Ophelia, Queen Bees and Wannabes, and a lot of books on film theory, because my paper is about Clueless and Mean Girls. After two straight years of reading and writing academically (and another 5 ahead of me), I think I'll limit my summer reading to Us Weekly and Texas Monthly...
13BTW, Meggy, I would suggest Jane Green for your chick lit paper. Bookends and Jemima J are both pretty decent, and easy reads.
14The Omnivore's Dilemma - its very interesting.
15I just finished Bitter is the New Black and am working my way through Charlie Wilson's War. I want to get the new Emily Giffin book too. My book club meets tomorrow and there are some great books on this comment thread to suggest for our next selection.
16I'm reading the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon (a little late, but I just finished his more recent book - The Yiddish Policemen's Union and loved it). Was thinking of tackling Anna Karinena this summer, since I never read it in school, but haven't decided...
Meggy - if you're looking for chick lit, I'd recommend Cassandra French's Finishing School for Boys by Eric Garcia (a little different than the usual girl looking for a husband plot) or Sophie Kinsella's Can You Keep a Secret? (I liked it better than the Shopaholic series.)
And yes, I've read waaaay too much chick lit.
17I just finished Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, which I found to be laugh-out-loud funny and a surprisingly naughty! I'm also reading Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, which was THE gothic novel of its time and inspired many a writer in its day (including Jane Austen). The language is beautiful, but a little heady to get through.
181) a spot of bother - mark hadden
whatever else i find at the library that is new...or whatever comes from the library from
my request list.
192/3) book #2 and #3 of Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy
4) cradle to cradle (non-fiction)
5) something by Thomas King...maybe Green Grass Running Water or Truth and Brightwater
6) Book for Buzz's July book club (doesn't look like june's book will be here in time!)
7) book for buzz's august book club
First I want to finish Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, and I've already started Dreams of My Father by Barack Obama... also: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, The Road by Courmac McCarthy (reread), Prince Caspian by C. S. Lewis, The Life of Pi by Yann Martel. That's a pretty good start! Oo, and lots of bridal magazines, tee hee!!
20This month Kushiel's Mercy is coming out, I can't wait to read it. It's by Jacqueline Carey, great read if anyone is looking for a fantastic fantasy/escape book. I can't wait for August when the new Dark Hunter book, Acheron and Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer in the Twilight series. It's not serious reading but it's good writing and you really fall in love with the characters.
21I would also find new books to read and get into. I have tried to read serious books and they just don't work for me. I would rather escape into new places and have fun with the books.
Although, I might pick up a couple biographies this summer, love them. I was looking at one for Jim Morrison recently...looked interesting.
I don't know yet! There are so many I want to read...I need to take a trip to Borders.
22Secretallstar I was just about to recommend that very same book for Meggy: http://www.amazon.com/Can-Keep-Secret-Sophie-Kinsella/dp/0385338082/ref=... It's an easy read and will definitely give you a giggle.
I've just finished Marian Keyes "The Charming Man". Now I'm reading "Rescuing Sprite" by Mark R. Levin. I'm also dipping in and out of Lonely Planet Australia. I'm going there in November. Any excuse to share that info!
23If I ever manage to finish "The Pillars of the Earth" i'm moving on to "Pride and Prejudice" and, if I'm not scarred by "The Pillars of the Earth" i'll try "The Other Boleyn Girl. I also wanna start reading through the Banned Books list, just cuz it's something I've always wanted to do and yet I always seem to forget about it. I think I'm gonna need to throw some chic-lit in there too though. Maybe the Shopaholic series?
24I read "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen a little while ago and highly recommend it. I just finished "Reading Lolita in Tehran"...it is good but drags in parts. Now I'm reading "Pride and Prejudice"...I like to throw in a classic now and then
.
25I barely have time to read during the busy school year (just finished my first year of college!) so I'm trying to catch up on a lot of books:
- Trying to re-read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince before the movie comes out, because I don't remember ANYTHING from that book.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (haha yeah I never read it...I bought it a year ago and I didn't want the series to end so I just put it in my closet until I reread the other books again)
- Twilight, then the rest of the series
- Chronicles of Narnia (re-read)
- The Secret Life of Bees
and more...
26By the way, to all those who mentioned Middlesex, that book is SO good! I highly recommend it.
I also want to try to read some Jane Austen novels (especially Northanger Abbey), Holly Would Dream, and Chasing Harry Winston.
27I just started reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card...I am going to borrow Twilight from my friend when I am done....Water for Elephants is SO good!!! Whatever else I find around my house, the library or the thrift shop!
28I just started the new David Sedaris book last night- I only made it through the first couple of stories but both made me laugh out loud. I think my boyfriend was jealous that his book wasn't as entertaining.
29I actually read a Gossip Girl book because some of my friends raved about them. I felt a little adolescent reading it at first, but it is just as juicy as that fabulous show.
Now I am reading Eat, Love, Pray which is AMAZING. I am only 70 pages in and I love it.
Next I want to pick up Are you there Vodka? it is me Chelsea, because I have heard of its funny qualities...and just to see what the fuss is about of course. And then I do not know!
30How do you do the italics thing?
- currently reading Foer - "Everything is Illuminated" (gorgeous)
- Eugenides - "Middlesex"
- Atwood - "Handmaid's Tale"
- McCarthy - "The Road"
- Nicole Krauss - "The Book of Love"
- DeLillo - "White Noise", "Underworld", "Libra", "The Names", "Mao II".. (yeah I've been piling them up on my desk)
- Pynchon - "V", "The Crying of Lot 49"
- Badinter - "XY on Masculine Identity" (started reading it, it's fascinating)
plus a lot more; I haven't been able to read since finishing my masters last August, so now I'm catching up and reading all the time (yes, that includes even at work hehe).
31I have a weekly trip to the bookstore to see what things I need to save up for to read. I had mine yesterday and so far here's my list:
- Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik (already bought, read and extremely pleased with it)
- Twisted Travels by Jessica Zafra (she's snarky and witty, I'm sure it'll be amusing to read)
-The Collected Traveler (collection of essays): France, once I get my hands on it I mean. It's sold out on every bookstore I go to.
- Reread Jane Austen novels too, it'll make me end up speaking/writing a bit like a 17th century debutante though.
I've seen a couple of titles and summaries I liked, but nothing I'm committed too, although I'll give a couple of them a chance.
32I'm super ready to relax and read by the beach with...
-Atonement (finishing it up)
-Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass
-Knights of the Round Table
And I think I'll get a jump start on this year's possible Oscar Adapted Screenplay noms- Ben Button, Rev Road, etc.
33I'm finishing up the Yiddish Policemen's Union, which is dragging a little. I want to read The Road, Pillars of the Earth, and Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. I'm also working my way through the Gossip Girl books - I was skeptical at first, but after the first book I was addicted. I read it in 3 days.
34Nasty Bits and Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell, A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of My Father by Augusten Burroughs, Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote, Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner, All We Ever Wanted Was Everything by Janelle Brown, etc.
35I have a long list, so here's the top of the list:
-Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books (I'm on book 4)
36-Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett, Good Omens
-Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale
-Banana Yoshimoto, Kitchen
The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
37The new Jackie Collins, the new Nora Roberts...
and I just finished Sail by James Paterson and Black Out by Lisa Unger. they were AMAZING!
38I'm currently reading His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, as well as listening to The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo (yay for iTunes offering it free as an audiobook last week!). & I just finished up The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I have Lots more books on my list this summer!
39I've been reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and I'm gonna start with My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult after I've finished Holmes.
