Columbia Pictures is looking to put together a new version of My Fair Lady, with Keira Knightley reportedly in talks to star as Eliza Doolittle. ComingSoon has more from the statement issued by Columbia today:
The new film will use the original songs of the much-loved Broadway show, and will not alter its 1912 setting, but Kenworthy and Mackintosh intend where possible to shoot the film on location in the original London settings of Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Tottenham Court Road, Wimpole Street, and Ascot racecourse. The filmmaking team will also look to adapt Alan Jay Lerner's book more fully for the screen by drawing additional material from Pygmalion — George Bernard Shaw's play that served as the source material for the musical — in order to dramatize as believably as possible for present-day audiences the emotional highs and lows of Eliza Doolittle as she undergoes the ultimate makeover.
Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad added, "The classic story of a flower girl transformed into an instant sensation couldn't be more timely in a contemporary world obsessed with overnight celebrity." Huh. Interesting thought. I guess.
I gotta say, I have some major mixed feelings about this. Most of all, I don't see the point. What do you think about a new My Fair Lady movie?

I think that she could do it but seriously I'm done with Hollywood remaking films.
1good lord I dont want to hear kiera doing a cockney accent, please baby jesus no.
2No thanks. Does anyone in Hollywood have an original idea?
3I think she would ruin it! No Audrey Hepburn movie should be remade! I will let Sabrina slide b/c Julia Ormond wonderful, but Keira Knightly already ruined Pride and Prejudice!
4Keira Knightley ... I love her but I don't know. She was luminous as Elizabeth Bennet in the recent Pride and Prejudice adaptation. But Eliza Doolittle is a pretty heavy role, and she's stepping in the footsteps of the great Audrey Hepburn and Julie Andrews.
5Stop remaking movies please and come up with original ideas.
6I am so sick of remakes. We really need some new blood that can come up with origial or even a spin of new material.
7keira always does movies like that and i guess she's successful at them, but sometimes as much as i obviously adore her, i wish she would do something modern and romantic or comedic like her start w/ bend it...
8I'd go see it.
9I love her, but this is a very bad idea. My Fair Lady does not need to be remade
10i agree with serial and jules0701! eliza is a great role for audrey! i can watch that and breakfast at tiffany's over and over again because she was great. who needs a remake when the original can stand the test of time?
11Why do they keep putting Kiera in my favourite classics so she can murder them? She is no Audrey Hepburn or Julie Andrews, and is better off sticking to Elizabeth Swann type roles.
12oh for f*ck sake!
13Neuroticone, I'm with you.... This is just not necessary and KK has no business trying to fill Audrey Hepburn's shoes.
14No way. The original is simply irreplaceable.
15NOOOO. I like Keira, but she is no Audrey Hepburn.
16It's not only about Keira replacing A. Hepburn.
There isn't any alive actor that can match Rex Harrison's comedic talents. No one.
17Honestly, I'm a little intrigued. It's not an exact remake - they're using actual locations and modifying it to include more of the Pygmalion story. I just hope this is all being orchestrated by capable people.
Of course, nobody will be able to truly replace Julie Andrews or Audrey Hepburn. Keira would certainly make a great "overnight sensation," but can she pull off the poor, unsophisticated flower girl? Can she even sing? Or is she going to lipsynch like Audrey Hepburn?
What I'm wondering is who could do Professor Higgins?
18I like the idea.
I don't view it as the leading lady "replacing" Hepburn or Andrews... I more view it as her just playing Eliza.
(But, seriously - can you say 'dream roll'?)
Love the idea of filming on location.
19This'll be a project to keep my eyes on.
I would probably watch it, but nobody can replace Audrey!
20And is it just me or would it be a crime to hire anyone besides Judi Dench to play Mrs. Higgins?
What an agreeable surprise this has been!
21Um, NO.
22I agree that it shouldn't be remade, but everything is these days...so I'd probably see it. I love the original and I love Keira.
23My Fair Lady simply does not need to be remade. And I really like Keira, but she is no Audrey Hepburn.
24my fair lady was done right and fine with audrey hepburn and george harrison. it doesn't need a remake. no thank you. boo to keira.
25I love Keira, and I think she's a great actress. So, as far as acting the part goes, I definitely think she could do this.
26However.
She doesn't look like Audrey Hepburn. If they want to get someone who can act and look like Audrey, they need to get Natalie Portman.
DaniCalifornia - i see your point about natalie portman being a more acceptable remake of audrey hepburn, but as is the case with musicians covering songs, what is the point if you aren't doing something different?
i enjoy keira knightley a lot and i also really love the my fair lady story. my only objection is in echoing the earlier fear of re-making professor henry higgins. i grew up on rex harrison's performance in this movie and in the original dr. dolittle. i adore him.
ultimately, i am very interested in this project and cannot wait to hear more. keira has recently been discovered as a feasible singer (in the edge of love?) but her interview said she did not want to ever sing again, so this will be interesting.
27Katie C, I think you mean Rex Harrison. lol
I am also in the camp of thinking Natalie Portman is the only acceptable Audrey remake choice, but I don't know if I could believe in her as the "before". She is so quintessentially as "after"
28aN after, rather.
29I don't always like the idea of remakes, but sometimes they turn out great when they are updated - look at Ocean's 11! I think she is a good choice for the role. I don't know if she can sing, but she has such a similar build to Audrey.
30DaniCalifornia - I agree with you about Natalie Portman resembling Audrey, she would be a great choice if they ever did a movie about Audrey's life. But Keira isn't portraying Audrey, she is playing Eliza Doolittle (which I still think is not necessarily a great casting choice). Julie Andrews played the original Eliza Doolittle on Broadway and Audrey doesn't look anything like her.
31My Fair lady is one my favorite movies of all time. I don't think it needs to be remade.
32Nooooooooooooo!
33Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
34I've been listening to the soundtrack nonstop since I was little, and I just saw it two weeks ago live - they CANNOT do this. The film doesn't need to be remade! And NOT with Keira.
What is her appeal? She keeps getting work. She's not that good an actress.
My Fair Lady was a hollywood favorite, but I don't feel the need to see it again in version 2.0 -- they got it right the first time. Why don't they just do pygmalion? There would be no singing...oh lord please don't let that girl sing.
35HOW COULD THEY?! My Fair Lady is one of the greatest movies ever made. How on earth could they remake it?
36Hollywood is so unoriginal these days.
37Keira Knightly should stop doing remakes.
Audrey Hepburn for the world!
Wha?! It's impossible to remake an Academy Award winning film, especially one in which Audrey sings! And I'm sick of remakes (like Footloose- come on!)
38I adore Keira but come on! A remake of an Audrey Hepburn classic? That's like blasphemy. And please, could she maybe do a film that isn't a period piece for once?
39i am so bored of keira knightley! she gets all the period movie roles, it seems. why on earth would they remake this movie?especially with the same setting, songs, etc?! why?
40It's driving me crazy that so many people are saying "no, not Keira! Natalie Portman looks like Audrey Hepburn."
I'm a fan of all three (I worship Audrey Hepburn -- I've read like three biographies and own even more), but Jesus. Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley are practically identical. One of Keira Knightley's first major roles was playing Natalie Portman's double in Star Wars Episode I, for Christ's sakes. And if either of them looks more like Audrey, it's Keira. Both Audrey and Keira have that distinctive edge. Natalie Portman is perfectly beautiful, she doesn't have that unusual extra something to make her like Audrey in my eyes.
Just go to Morphthing.com and combine Keira and Natalie's faces and see if you can pick out the distinct features of both from one another.
But all that aside, I think everyone who's against this movie doesn't know what they're talking about and needs to go do some research. For one thing Audrey didn't sing for herself (Keira IS singing for herself in her new movie, The Edge of Love and she's not half bad -- just go check it out on youtube). For another, My Fair Lady is not as iconic as all that; it didn't have much social resonance. It's not like they're remaking Breakfast at Tiffany's or Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind. Yes, the original is a charming, entertaining film, but it can certainly be refreshed and improved upon in a very interesting way. Also, the comment about it being relevant to overnight celebrity is an interesting aspect to consider.
I say open up and give this idea a bit of a chance! It's not the worst thing that could happen to Hollywood (that's Jessica Simpson, and she already happened).
41Keira would be great for this role. She is beautiful but coarse, and that defines Eliza Doolittle.
Chihaz: Are you sure she looks like Natalie Portman? I don't think so at all. They're both beautiful but Natalie is more classy and feminine where Keira is a bit more rough and tomboy-ish. And I don't think their faces resemble at all though they're both beautiful.
42austerity - they may be more distinct from each other now, but when natalie was in the star wars prequels and keira played her lady-in-waiting (along with sofia coppola, btw!) /double, they were indistinguishable. i read an interview that said even their own mothers couldn't tell them apart in makeup!
i agree with chihaz, this has a lot of potential.
43I adore the original, but yeah of course I want to see this! Proper Covent Garden locations and a brand new (well...) musical to see at the movies!
