While some of you longtime Simpsons fans were celebrating the show's 20th-season renewal this week, just as many of you were saying the show should have quit while it was ahead. I've already read one story musing that the end could be near for the show, and some people think that's coming, oh, seven or eight years too late.
We talk a lot around here about shows that get canceled before their time, but what about shows that just hang on too long? Frankly, as much as I love Alias, I wish it had wrapped up earlier. What other shows should have been canceled sooner than they actually were? Sound off below.

Versace
Michael Kors
True Religion
7th Heaven definitely. It was good in the beginning, but in later seasons it recycled the same storylines way too many times and it got way too preachy. I mean how many times can you do a story on teen pregnancy?!? I'm still angry that the CW renewed it over Everwood because the ratings for the finale were so high. Um, everyone watches finales to see how a show bows out, that doesn't mean that they want to continue watching it. I really wanted to give the CW a big "tolda so!" after the ratings for the final season were abysmal and they had to cancel it once and for all.
1dawson's creek.
2and for me at least . . . lost.
Totally agree Ekaterina! I was so ticked when 7th Heaven was brought back instead of Everwood.
Cancelled too late:
Beverly Hills 90210 (after everyone had dated eachother 3 times over we didn't need to see anymore)
Frasier - they ran out of decent storylines after the first 3 years.
Still on and need to be cancelled:
3CSI Miami
One Tree Hill
Boston Legal
ER
Charmed
Everybody loves Raymond
The George Lopez show
the "simple rules for dating my teenage daughter" show (should have been nixed when John died)
Friends
4I love Alias. I just didn't like how season 5 turned out with Vaughn MIA in most of the season. I miss shows like Alias that have a strong female character. Everything is so bland or recycled.
Reality TV should get a clue and end shows like the Bachelor. I mean c'mon you know what's going to happen. Nasty cat fights and deception. *yawn*
5I adored Alias and even Season 1,4 &5 on DVD. I agree it should have ended sooner, but with only 5 seasons, maybe they though they could rebound from a not so great 3rd season.
6Charmed and 7th Heaven was definitely on for too long. I feel like ER should have ended ages ago instead of just this year.
I hate to say it because it was one of my favorite shows but Roseanne. The last season after they won the lottery was awful.
7I agree about Roseanne. Also, Friends, which stopped being funny after season 5 or 6.
I really only watch 3 or 4 shows now, and none of them are cancel-worthy yet. I don't know about any other current shows. I guess some of the reality shows like Survivor and the Bachelor are getting REALLY old.
8I have another reality show that has outlasted it's welcome - The Real World!
9Friends, ER, Alias, (I'm sorry to say this)... Scrubs? Moving to ABC, really? And the last season (or 2) of Gilmore Girls sucked hard core. Cheers.
10Scrubs. I'm sorry to say it, but it stopped being funny after the first few seasons.
11ER
12Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
I have to a agree with all of you. The Real World has gotten out of control. I caught some of this season (considering the last season I really watched was Vegas I think) and it's so overwhelming with the rehab and anger management and stripper. Oy. Give it a rest already.
13As much as I loved Gilmore Girls, the last season was not a great way to end it. I wish they'd finished a season earlier when the creator could have crafted a much better ending. Like, one that included Jess.
14i love one tree hill and it just needs one more season so lucas and peyton can get together!! the oc lost its juice also in the 4th season.. i still loved it tho
15Charmed
167th Heaven
Gilmore Girls- the last two seasons could have been good
Friends
For me, I different have problems with necessarily how long a show lasted, it was that most shows don't know when they are going to be cancelled or when they decide to go off the air. For instance...
- Friends was good for about 8 of 10 seasons, and even a "bad" season of Friends is better than most TV shows. Its disappointing though that the last season only had 18 episodes because Jennifer Aniston wanted a shortened season so she could focus on her movie career (thats true, by the way, and I'm still a fan of Jen on Friends even though I have an Angie avatar). I wish they could have ended more smoothly so they wouldn't have had to rush getting Ross and Rachel back together in the last season before the show ended.
- Alias had a great story for the first two seasons but I think they jumped the shark with the flashforward 2 years later at the end of Season 2. It was WAY too early in that show to be doing that and the next couple of seasons were pretty crappy afterwards. Then the final season was really strange because Vaughn supposedly died and then Jennifer Garner was pregnant in real life...
- Contrary to what some people said, I'm happy that Gilmore Girls lasted seven seasons because it coincided with Rory's college graduation. HOWEVER, as much as I actually liked Chris (Rory's father), I wish that he and Lorelai had a romance earlier in the show rather than saving it for the last season. Then I think Lorelai should've ended up with Luke towards the end (without
17"Luke's secret daughter" storyline), because even though I liked Chris better with Lorelai, I always knew that they were planning for her to end up with Luke.
Two of my favorite shows: Ellen and Will and Grace. They just weren't as funny in the last seasons.
18OMG the Real World is still on! I had no idea. I thought it was canceled years ago.
19Friends carried on especially too long.
20The Sopranos, The Office (I LOVE it, but it's going to overstay it's welcome), Will & Grace because it was getting ridiculous with the guest stars, Gilmore Girls, Family Guy, 2 and 1/2 Men, pretty much everything.
217th heaven, charmed, simpsons, ER, the bachelor!, boy meets world, boston legal, fraiser, friends, survivor, flavor of love, rock of love.
22Reality shows
23Will and Grace
24Real World
Charmed was my absolute favorite show! I definitely don't think that went on too long...but other than that...I mostly agree with everyone else...especially people who have mentioned Real World...that show is HORRIBLE these days and I used to be such a fan...sigh...
25friends and scrubs.
26ER and Survivor.
27Full House lost something the last few seasons when michelle grew up and the twins didn't fill the void
28Yep-- 7th Heaven.
29I am shocked that ER is still on the air as well.
I still haven't watched the last season of GG because we didn't have the CW and I'm not sure I'll like how it ends! It did get pretty obnoxious. Seasons 1-3 were the best!
Saved by the Bell...the college years were ridiculous.lol
30I def. agree with all these! I don't watch Lost, but I like how the writers mapped out the story, so the know when the end is coming. I think Greys should do the same, I think they are residents for seven years and thats where it should end!
31Will & Grace - I loved the first seasons 1 - 6 but it was complete rubbish from there on
32ER - should have ended years ago
Alias - the final season was terrible!
Friends
33DEFINITELY The Real World and reality television in general
and definitely 7th Heaven
VH1 reality shows (even though I would prefer that they had never existed in the first place)
there are more shows already listed that I would agree with, but all of these shows in general are either shows I never watched or shows I barely watched. But it pisses me off that especially shows like 7th Heaven (super cheesy show) lasted longer than Arrested Development and Wonderfalls. Screw television. It's my least favorite form of entertainment and some of the shows I would probably like are on channels I don't even have.
ER
34Survivor
Real World
All need to go!
hate to say it, but smallville. the past few seasons have been ridiculous.
35Las Vegas and Medium. Both started off awesome then fizzled to crap.
36wait ER is still on??? jajajaja
don't gonna say anyone else, because I can't see the point of putting ER with other.. I mean ER it's like more than 10 seasons??, the other shows that I don't like, aren't that long.
37DEFINITELY The X-Files. It should have ended one year earlier, and had better resolution of all the storylines. It makes me bitter just thinking about it, but hopefully the movie this summer will redeem it!!!
38Oh jeez, where do I begin??
For me, it's Will & Grace, Friends, ER, and Scrubs. Oh, and Full House...hateddddd that show.
39Friends---WWAAYY too long. Repeated storylines? Boring. Old.
Alias---SO GOOD! But totally started getting weird after like 3 seasons. Like just plain bizarre.
Scrubs---The first 3 seasons were golden. What's going on. Honestly.
Even The Office, I think, if it doesn't get its act together is really pushing it. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing.
40E.R., hands down.
This show just wasn't as enjoyable and cutting edge once Mark Greene died, let alone when Noah Wyle left.
417th heaven and charmed
charmed...became just so dismal
how can anybody say friends! i think they ended when they should've, and i loved all 10 seasons
42Reality shows. Booooooring!!!! ZZZZ
43I agree:
Roseanne
ER
I eventually stopped watching. I never saw the last season(s).
44Yeah I just started watching Roseanne this past year, but I've realized they should've quit while they were ahead. I mean, making them win the lottery changed the entire dynamic of the show...
But I agree, 7th Heaven was on far too long. I was wondering if the twins(Sam and David) would end up actually going to school and whatnot, and they did. Ugh.
But as for recent shows, American Idol and Survivor come to mind as shows that should just be axed from now. But definitely 100%(for me at least) is ANTM. Let it go, please just let it go... it should've been gone about four cycles ago
45ITA w/an above poster... how many times can an evil villain/virus/plague/etc. pop up on Smallville??
46SMALLVILLE!!!
47ER without a doubt, I don't know anyone who still watches it and there are way more interesting dramas on tv now.
48i think LOST should stop now because the storylines are getting a bit far fetched..
49..i loved charmed but the last season was a BIt much!
Scrubs, definitely. It was funny up til season 4-5, and the last seasons have been terribly boring, unfunny and tacky.
And it pains me to say that.
Agreed about Alias - I love the show and I'm glad the last season was better, but at least one of the middle seasons was a complete disaster.
Oh and here's an old one, but Lois and Clark: I really wish they'd kept the wittiness of the first seasons.
