I was interested in this remake of the 1939 film The Women when there was initial casting news about it (Debra Messing, Annette Bening, Meg Ryan, Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, Candace Bergen, etc. etc.), but after the incredible success of the Sex and the City movie, I'm even more excited about the opportunities for movies directed at a female audience. If nothing else the SATC movie might have indicated to filmmakers and studios that (hello!) it's possible to actually have a female-centric film do well at the box office. In other words: women can be valuable audience members, too, you know.

Anyway, from the new trailer it looks like there's The Woman (Meg Ryan) and all her girlfriends discover that there's The Other Woman (Eva Mendes) but the women don't know how to tell her about this other woman. True to the original, there don't appear to be any men in the movie. This new trailer isn't phenomenal, but it still looks like a reasonably funny movie about female friendship (and rivalry).
The Women opens September 12. To check out the trailer and tell me what you think, read more.

this looks cute! I LOVE Meg Ryan and she looks so good in this!! what a hottie!
1Doesn't opening it at the beginning of September suggest the studio's not expecting much?
2The original has the wife trying to decide if she could hold on to the marriage and her self-respect.
It looks cute! I'll probably go see it when it comes out...
3I LOVE THAT CAST! Pure perfection... All Star cast of the female actors I love! It seems like a funny, feel good movie... I'm all for it!
4I really am not sure how I feel about it.. The original is one of my ALL TIME favorite movies and even though it is from 1939 it has a modern feel.. There is intelligence, independence, sex, booze and chick fights...
When you put it into perspective of 1939, and the prejudices of that time it makes it the all that much cooler...
There is a totally, horribly cheesy 'fashion show' that has nothing to do with the story .... I am sure because some studio male thought that is what women would want to see ...That stupid 'fashion show' really highlights the male hollywood idea of women and makes you aware how brave idea of an all female cast .. women, who are smarter than men really was ..
The new version may be a cute movie.. but it will not be the same ultra cool flick!! ..
5I'm a fan of the original too. I'm leery about a remake, but I'll probably check it out.

7I've been watching for this movie since before the trailer came out. I'd stumbled upon an article about Diane English, the screen play writer and producer for The Women. She had a determination and passion about making this movie, and it was a long time coming (like SJP & SATC). Diane English was a writer/executive producer on Murphy Brown. I LOVED that show! ... Then I learned of this trailer and saw the cast. It looks funny! There's no way that I'm not seeing this movie! It's on my calendar!
8Interesting. Not sure if I'll see it in theaters. Even though it's a great cast, SATC had it's crazed fan base hauling hiney to see a long-awaited movie. I doubt this one will compare in that sense.
9I saw the previews before the SATC movie and it is one that I want to see.
10I agree with Goukas and taylorbath - I adore the original movie. I don't think this will carry the same punch, but I think it will be fun nonetheless. I am getting a little sick of remakes though - this has been a Hollywood fashion for about 5 years now, just remake after remake, and it's getting old. Original ideas please! Sorry - tangent. I still think this looks fun, but don't believe it can hold a candle to the original.
11looks cute, I'll check it out. Might try to see the original first
12Ooooo, I wanna see it!
13This looks horrendous. I love the original way too much and it's just not the same without the cat-scratch dialogue.
14the original is such a classic. but I'm willing to give this one a try.
15i have the same argument for movies about ethnic groups. people want to see themselves and their issues on the big screen. i have a bunch of fav actors and actresses and trust me, you guys rarely cover them on this network.
16Looks really funny!
17I'm with you ladies who love the original way too much to fully embrace this remake. The sad part is, many people will write off Clare Booth Luce's work of pure genius as a cheap knockoff of Sex and the City.
18Oh, I've never seen the original but I am so intrigued. The cast here looks great and I probably will see it. Thank goodness Meg looks kinda normal here. I love that there are no men around-heh!
19i saw a preview or trailer for this movie, and totally forgot about how many major female stars that are in it. i'm sure that i'll drag my boyfriend to see it cause i like things like this - although everyone's right SATC really had a following because of it's success on TV - but i'm sure this will do 'ok'.....at least we can hope.
20I gotta say, I wasn't expecting much when I heard this was in production, but the trailer show promise! The chemistry between everyone is really good; I'm in.
21I loved the original but HATED the weakness of the main character at the end of the movie. I am sure the ending will be different in the remake version.
22This is one of my fave old movies and it was extremely forward thinking for it's time (and even ours perhaps) I love the women in the updated cast but I'm not sure anyone will be able to capture the same magic as the original. I mean the showdown in the bathroom was awesome. The relationship between the mother and daughter was crazy awesome as well. They treated women as intelligent capable beings in that movie which I don't think Hollywood does now. I mean all the hype about SATC making money as though women only consume what their men tell them to sort fo shoes that studios don't respect women's opinions
23I can officially say that I'm annoyed with Debra Messing. :|
24Looks good!
25I'm looking forward to this.
26Wow, this really isn't what I was expecting when I first read about this movie...it looks a bit too screwball for my taste. But I'm willing to give it a chance.
27Don't think I'll be seeing this one...
and I'm sick of hearing Mercy in every other trailer. It's a great song, but come on!
28My sister told me to check this out, and I think I'll see it. But I'm with fashion4ward, I'm sick of hearing Mercy in every single trailer!
29looks good- anything that has Diane Keaton attached to it will be classy!
