I can confidently say that Lasse Hallstrom has become one of my most well-respected directors over time. I loved Chocolat, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and last year's indie film The Hoax, and I have a lot of respect for The Cider House Rules and The Shipping News. So whenever there's news about a Hallstrom project, I sit up and pay attention.
Now Hallstrom is signed on to direct Channing Tatum in an adaptation of Nick Sparks' bestselling novel Dear John. According to Variety, the story follows "a soldier who, while home on leave, falls for a conservative college student." Tatum will play the soldier, though there's no word yet on who will play his leading lady.
I tend to think of Sparks' books as sentimental weepies and while I liked the movie version of The Notebook, frankly I barely got through A Walk to Remember. But who knows? Maybe Channing and whoever is cast as the "conservative college student" will become the next Ryan and Rachel!

And I agree, The Notebook was much better than "A Walk to Remember."

2I was forced to watch "A Walk to Remember" and found it so awful that I refuse to ever see "The Notebook."
3I'm a sucker for Nicholas Sparks books. I was disappointed in "A Walk To Remember", kinda reminded me of a Lifetime movie. But "The Notebook" makes me cry every time - great casting.
4i didnt like a walk to remember either. my mom and brother liked it a lot, and they don't usually like sappy movies. so weird. i loved the notebook! this one looks like something i'll be seeing by myself at home. boo hoo hoo...
5I loved The Notebook and A Walk to Remember! I read the book version of A Walk to Remember and I didn't like it as much as the movie.
6I loved this book! I'm also a huge Spark's fan even though some would categorize his work as "sappy."
I cried after i read this so hopefully the movie will be just as emotional and thought-provoking.
7Love all of his books! Have to agree on the Notebook and A walk to remember. Although I loved both books only liked the Notebook movie except the ending since that's not how the book ended.
8I love the movie the notebook as well as the book. I cant stand the movie a walk to remember but I love the book because it is way better. I hope this one comes out well because the book was ok but it might be better as a movie.
9I love all of sparks books even if the ending is not what you want it to be, it all ends well with a life lesson sort of. =]
10i love all og his novel but somehow, their adaptions are quite annoying, some perfect scenes written in the novel are not well played as what it has been written, their movies are good but for me reading his books is far way better than a 2-3 hours play (winks)
