I'm a little sad to report that I'm feeling underwhelmed by last night's season finale of Gossip Girl. I've been trying to get my head around what exactly seemed "off" last night because we were definitely treated to some great one-liners, a lot of good Chuck moments, and we even witnessed Dan scheming alongside Blair. On the surface, last night was everything we could have asked for from Gossip Girl, so why did it fall flat?

I think they actually gave us too much, too fast and didn't leave us with much of a finale cliffhanger. Regardless of how anti-climactic many of the scenes felt, there was still a lot that went down and so we must discuss. You can take Geek's quiz here, and for the rest of my thoughts, read more.
- The Georgina story has been building now for weeks, her evilness reaching new lows with every lie. You expect someone like that to go out swinging, in a fiery blaze of defeat just before she is about to cause permanent damage to everyone involved. But instead, Georgina dissolved into a spoiled child who was more scared of her parents than anything else, and what's more, this was all resolved a mere ten minutes into the program. A little disappointing right? I mean, it was getting so good.
- Even Rufus and Lily sputtered out without much ado. These two are supposed to have powerful star-crossed lovers tension and yet they are so, well, adult about their feelings for each other. That's no fun. When Rufus shows up at Lily's wedding they kind of shrug, say they love each other and then Rufus goes, "Have a nice wedding!" Oh. How wonderful, I'm so glad everyone is so cordial. Where is the drama in that?!
- I did like how the lovely morning music screeched to a stop at the opening of the episode when Blair realized she was in Chuck's arms. Chuck's response, "We were up late plotting against Georgina, we must have dozed off."
- Speaking of plotting, everyone was extremely self-aware this week, including Dan who sought help from Blair to get back at Georgina and said, "This is so weird, I don't usually do plots against people."
- I loved when Gossip Girl chimed in with, "Poor Humphrey. Looks like our regular moral compass, isn't such a straight arrow after all.”
- Rufus is going on tour with The Breeders! That's actually pretty cool.
- Ugh, was anyone annoyed with the did-he-didn't-he sleep with Georgina issue? But I loved how Serena was just like, "la-la-la, I don't want to hear it" and kept running away from Dan.
- Meanwhile, it is hammered home that Chuck's love for Blair brings out the good, decent person in him which is, as Blair tells Serena, awfully ironic given Blair's general disposition. Still, she lets herself get swept away by Chuck's charm (ha!) and grosses out Serena by talking about how sexy he is.
- Just as many of us predicted, Dan could not stick it out with Serena and he broke up with her. However, I thought he sounded awfully sanctimonious when he yelled, "I got seduced by someone else because of your lies!" Um, no. I'm pretty sure the only one responsible for Dan getting seduced was Dan. Let's take a little ownership here, buddy.
- So Dan and Serena break up, Chuck and Blair are in love, Nate and Chuck are friends again, and Jenny gets an internship with Blair's mom for the summer. So, they skip ahead one week. At this point I think I blurted out, "Really?!" How much can they squeeze into one finale?
- And before I can even process anything that has happened (heartbreak for Lonelyboy and S, Chuck and B together), every relationship changes. Again.
- I get that Blair and Chuck have more sparks apart from each other than together, but still. Did they have to break them up that fast? We are talking a commercial break here. I'm confused why Josh Schwartz and gang wouldn't want to take their time with Chuck and Blair's story — a couple episodes of them falling in love so that their inevitable implosion is that much more heartbreaking and/or fabulous.
In the end, Chuck can't commit to Blair and gives in to guest star Lydia Heart's charms. But Blair finds her own random hottie on her way to Europe for the summer. And, of course, as soon as Dan is single, so is Vanessa. She made me laugh when she admitted that Nate was prettier than her. So that leaves Nate and Serena, alone, together. Probably going to the Hamptons. Sigh. What did you think? Was the season finale fun or were you left feeling a little cold?

I was pretty disappointed by Blair's "evil b*tchy plan" against Georgina, it was not exciting or scandalous AT ALL.
but that ending when Chuck meets that real-life socialite did save the kinda boring finale.
p.s. am I the only one who wants Lily to be with Bart Bass?!?!!
1Agreed. This episode was rushed and it really didn't have the fun or suspense of previous episodes.
I think what Dan means about not sleeping with Georgina but he "might as well have" means he wanted to, but didn't physically.
Ugh, and I hate seeing Serena and Nate together.
2Yeah the could have left a lot more way up in the air - particularly chuck and blair. Why make it go away before it even started? That made me do this
too.
I agree about Dan - own up dude and realize you're not the perfect guy you think you are.
3this isn't fabsugar but it must be said, Blair looked incredible in the final scene, waiting to board the helicopter.
4I was disappointed. I wanted more out of Georgina's downfall as well...the only thing it did was give me hope that maybe she'll be back?
The end needed better cliffhangers too. The other episodes had better cliffhangers than the finale did...boo that!
Still can't wait for it to start up in the Fall again. Hopefully despite the lame cliffhangers there will still be an awesome premier come the fall.
5Completely blown just as you were Buzz! It was a lot but I did feel cheated. My suggestions for the cliff hanger finale:
-leave S & D's relationship open. Have them upset but still in love like they were at the end of the wedding.
-let Chuck and B's thing live on for a bit. Maybe have them actually fly to Europe on their trip together like they planned.
-Vanessa and Nate, could care less on that one.
-Georgina: oh where of where do I begin! how fulfilling it was to see her broken down, but how wack it was to see her punk out like that in front of her parents. I guess it goes to show you that she's still a little girl no matter how grown she tries to act, but they could've done something a little better with her. Like have her escape and show up at the wedding or something.
They could have deleted the whole "one week later" bit and saved it for the fall. I can't say that I'm looking forward to the season opener all that much, but we'll see what happens this fall.

6skiwi, I think I want Lily to be with Bart, but I think it's mostly because I want to see S & D together. Plus I like the sister/brother banter of Serena and Chuck.
7Soooo WHAT THE F*CK!!!!!!
I got jipped BIG TIME!
Ok. So Georgina's parents are sending her to lock-down school.
Big whoop. SHe's gonna be 18 in a minute, AND she's broken out of places before, so what's the big deal now???
Serena and Dan made me throw my remote at the TV twice (literally).
Lily should be with Bart. But why keep dragging homeboy into the picture with all their years of days gone by crap. They should just be lovers and keep that crap real.
And Dan's half-akin homegirl, Vanessa? I hate the character, but i think she's really beautiful. BUT WHY did they put her in that BUTT-F*ck ugly dress?!
And CHuck and Blair. They should've left us hanging more on that story. let our hearts flutter over the summer.
BUT NO, i got jipped . . .and i broke my remote, so now i have to call Time Warner to bring me a new one!
8I don't think Blaire and Chuck are done. The last thing she said was he would be there (in Europe) 10 hours behind her (he was flying commercial)--so he is going, but he just had to slept with one more girl before he went. I think they will for sure bring their relationship into next season. And I hope they do because they were def. my favorite part of last night!
9I think that what might have happened is they had a plan for where everyone was going to be by the end of the season, and with the writer's strike cutting everything short, they had several more episodes worth of material that they decided to pack into a half an hour so they can pick up wherever they planned to with season 2. I thought the biggest thing left hanging out there without any explanation was what happened to Nate and Vanessa. I don't mind the Dan/Serena thing because you know they will be off again/on again for the next 5 years, but with Nate/Vanessa I would have liked more resolution.
10Nickey- I completely agree, I would have totally preferred that they lopped off the "one week later" bit because it ruined everything they had set up in the episode. Guh.
11Cherylish - I had a thought that if they brought Georgina back that Blair would be her primary target, which could be good. But then, why not hint at that? Perhaps Tranchenberg hasn't negotiated another couple of seasons yet...or something.
12I thought the episode was actually REALLY good.
Blair and Chuck together are hilarious!!! I think they're the couple's true love pair. Just wait, three years from now they'll be having the series finale and we'll all be rooting for Blair and Chuck to finally get it right! I agree that B and Chuck aren't done yet; just delayed while he gives into his normal self. I think Bart Bass's little speech about him changing spooked him a bit.
I do agree that I want to know what actually went wrong with Nate and Vanessa; that was awfully short-lived.
13omg!!! lol.. me and my roomie were talking sooo much trash about vanessa's orange dress - i thought we were the only ones annoyed with it.. lol.
14i agree - the throwdown between blair and georgina was eh. i thought it sucked!
and the rest was a lil whateves... for a quick second i just thought it was the series finale because it all ended in this nice little package... i also thought that the scene of serena and dan dancing together was the actual ending until my roomie fast forwarded the commercials and i realized there was still some left.. i think though that that scene of them dancing should have been the ending - especially because right there - we dont end up resolving everything else...
i missed that season finale tease shows tend to give.
i think that nate and vanessa are over bc she is still in love with dan. blair brought it up at the wedding and their painting exchange was very emotionally charged. being that vanessa is the only honest and forthright person on the show, it makes since that she would be true to her feelings.
15I don't think Serena and Dan are over. If they are, then what is the point of having Dan and Vanessa on the show? If they don't get mixed up in the drama of the upper east side snobs, they don't have a storyline. The same goes for Jenny. She's boring now because she's just kind of by herself. I'm sure those 3 will somehow get swept back up into the drama with the rest of the bunch.
16Blair and Chuck...it was so funny how they were in love, then suddenly, at the same moment, they find random other people to be with and don't even care about each other. In a way they're perfect for each other because of their egos and materialism.
I feel like all the storylines were played out in a very short period of time, and I'm not sure what the writers could come up with that's good for next season. The episode kind of left me not wanting more.
oh has anyone read the New York Magazine reviews on the Gossip Girl episodes??!?! the two guys (their both fabulously gay) are SO hilarious!!!
btw can someone explain to me why Georgina wanted to split Serena and Dan apart? was it because Serena was all "innocent" now or was it just b/c G is pyschotic??
17Disappointment
18My bf told me the other day that Michelle Tranchtenberg had been signed as a regular cast member for next season, Buzz, though I couldn't give you his source.
19skiwi-thanks for the tip on the ny mag reviews.... i laughed so hard
i loved the part where they talk ab georgina. too funny
20I completely agree...very disappointed! I would have much preferred a few cliff-hanger moments and have to wait to see what happens than to have everything tie up so quickly, so much. Especially the Georgina thing, that was so lame...very unbelieveable to watch that happen.
With everything that had been leading up to this episode, I just thought they could have done the finale so much better, many more options...
21I LOVED it when Dan called Nate "man bangs"! It was hysterical! And the best man speech was kind of moving, even for Chuck.
22well i think it all would have sounded interesting ( i missed the episode and wanted a recap) but what you have written sounds so biased, i don't know that i would want to see it now.
23Am I the only one that thinks that there is more to Rufus and Lily's closed door conversation than meets the eye? I can't believe that they would just end it like that.
And Blair and Chuck were totally the best part of the episode. I wouldn't be surprised if they are on-again, off-again all next season. I really hated Blair at the beginning of the season, but now I love her! And Serena has totally turned into the whiny one.
24i feel a bit unfullfilled with this ep...
25I don't know why the thing with Rufus and Lilly is like a "huh?" to me... I thought they were going to cancel the wedding, she's going to walk up and call it over and Bart even said something about set him free... Then they got married? what? why? DOn't she and Rufus decided that they love each other?
26and does Serena's eye make up in the wedding bother anyone? it kinds of look dirty... and not flattering to her at all...
27I totally agree! I was expecting sooo much more. The past episodes have been soooo good! But og well! I can't wait for next season!
28Althought Blair looked absolutely beautiful this episode (as she always does), is it just me or did she look a little bloated for some reason?
29Dan to Serena: "I'm the most understanding person in the world"
Did he really said that with a straight face?
30So glad that I wasn't the only one who noticed that Dan dumped all the blame on Serena. I thought that was just plain awful and furthermore, proof of just how far Georgina's scheming had gone. She wanted to hurt Serena and guess what, he just played right into it. Did he not see that that was part of the scheme too?!? I'm kinda done with him after this.
31I like Serena and Nate together! Although it will be a little pretty people together...
Can't wait to see how the second season picks up. Frankly after everything, the juicy stuff is much more interesting. The end line from Chuck was classic.
And to follow up on another comment: Kristin over at Eonline confirmed that there are no plans to bring Georgina back as yet. They've been scraped.
32I know they promised a wedding or at least glimpse of a wedding, but I would have been much happier if they spend more time wrapping up Georgina's storyline (instead of just stamping boot camp across her forehead.) I could have dealt with a wedding cliffhanger.
I don't know how I feel about the one week later. I could have dealt without knowing that Blair and Chuck were together for a whole week before Chuck folded. Even though I was excited and wanted to kill Bart for putting doubts in poor Chuck's head.
Still can't wait for the new season.
33Does anyone know who the actor is that plays the guy Blair gets on the plane with at the end? He's gorgeous.
34I am pretty sure that Dan and S will be getting back together...I mean half of the show is about the class struggle - unless Jenny takes over that role solo (I hope not, the amount we saw of her last night was perfect) Did not like S's dress for the wedding. And I think that Chuck is jetting off to Europe after he gets his little fling over with, because he is, Chuck Bass.
So didn't care about Vanessa and Nate, so glad that is over.
35oh crap i missed it last nite!!
36"“Haven’t you heard?....I’m the crazy b*tch around here.”
Loved it
I think the episode was ok... wish there was more though. Can't wait until next season!!!
I LOVE Blair!! I never have liked the idea of Chuck and Blair, but this episode I saw it there and was rooting for them to get together... and then they 'break them up'. But I agree with one of the above posters... I think that they will start out next season with Blair and Chuck together b/c he is still going to Europe... just delaying it by 10 hrs.
Oh and I, too, think there is more to the 'behind the doors' part with Lily and Rufus.
I wish that the take down of Georgi had been better... seemed anti-climatic to me.
LOVE GG!!
37Huge let down, they should have extended last weeks episode and made it a two parter with the cliff hanger of last week. And can I say that I absolutely detest every single match they ended th show with.
38I didn't think about being dissapointed until I read this, but now that I did read it I do feel a little cheated...
I want more from Rufus and Lilli. They are my favs on the show. I do like Bart too, but there is just so much between R & L.
I really, REALLY didn't like Serena's dress for the wedding. I thought that dress was so much worse then Vanessa's.
I do love Chuck though... "I'm Chuck Bass." Oooo!
39Totally agreed. There were some OMG moments but they tied everything up before it ended. BOO! The way it floated off into summer was so dumb. And the whole Dan/Serena thing? It was like they were maybe getting back together then they didn't talk on the phone then she was maybe/maybe not with Nate.
Liked the plot pieces, but not that they were all mushed together.
On another note, Blake Lively has extraordinarily perky boobs. Not like she had a boob job, but like what I would want if I got a boob job.
40I wanted to murder Bart. I blame him.
41i agree with most of the posts above. it was a bit disappointing after the few good episodes we had post-writers' strike!
anyway i think maybe chuck will go to tuscany or maybe not. he got scarred by what bart told him - how he would have to consider other ppl's feelings etc. and anybody else notice that when nate and chuck and the captain first greeted each other at the wedding, chuck said the girl's not worth it? and nate said that's the problem? even though nate said he's ok with blair and chuck being together as long as they're happy, maybe blair told him that chuck messed it up and somehow nate came to the rescue of blair and realized he loves blair and so nate and blair will be back together?
i'm so glad nate and vanessa are over though! didn't like that pairing at all.
pretty sure dan and serena will be back together next season. hopefully serena and nate wont hook up in the summer.
as for G, maybe they will bring her back mid-season. and blair will definitely be her primary target if she comes back! definitely wanna see how that will turn out.
i think too much was resolved in the episode.. it's kinda weird how there wasnt much cliffhangers as most finales would have.
42I think that Lively had a boobjob during the writer's strike. (I know it has nothing to do with the episode, but I haven't seen it yet because I live in Europe)
43I have not seen it yet, but based on what I read... Gee, they spoiled the whole season!!! Dan and Vanessa??? NONONO! That would make me sooo mad... I don`t like her AT ALL; the only time I actually cared for her was when she was with Nate (and Nate looked SO much better, more... "decontracte"!) LOL
44I liked it, but it could've been the episode BEFORE the finale, then in the finale it resolves some of the issues in this episode and leaves some new ones open. Honestly, Georgina Sparks sold her pony for COCAINE. Do we really think she's not smart enough to escape Penance? P.S. loved how she was wearing a cross necklace while being presented to her parents.
45Hated It
46D is so complicated! He needs to get over himself and be a little less self-righteous. Yes, S needed to be truthful with D even if her fears would have become actuality, but that’s the risk she needed to take. Instead S made things more complicated by lying and covering things up. Though, D may have gone too far by making a definite split. Some time off to think might have been better; however, I would love to see N and S together! They are both so cute. Sorry D I think you are better off with V.
47I agree, buzz. It felt a little anti-climatic for me in the end. I think some summer love between S+Nate and Vanessa+Dan wouldn't be so bad! My Monday nights will be rather boring now...
48I totally agree there were like 10 substories in the 1 hour!!!!
~I must admit I expected a bigger bang outta the whole Blair vs Georgie showdown...blair be the B***H we all know and love
~I was loving the Blair and Chuck reunion so it could spice things up.. and i loved the idea of a romantic Chuck actually embracing a relationship and leaving wh*redom behind....the funny thing is I got on Popsugar and put on Chatter that i was happy about their reunion and then after the commercial break i had to retract my entire statement calling chuck a hot jerk lol they broke up faster then my bathroom break lasted!!!!!i hope they come back from the summer after having their flings to reunite b/c they had the most chemistry on the show
~Seriously, jenny could be off of the show completely and i wouldnt care!
~umm i want a better reason for why nate and vanessa broke up, anyone else? they were a cute odd couple!the idea of serena and nate just seems a little too cookie cutter for me.....
~did anybody see the supposed XOXO anywhere in the episode?!!!
49Totally bummed by last night!!
