Baz Luhrmann, the Australian director of Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge has been working on his next film Australia for a while, and now we've got our first look at the project. Although the trailer doesn't give away much of the plot (I think Nicole Kidman makes an attempt, kinda, in the form of a simplified children's story but it doesn't really help much), it appears we're looking at an Australia under attack during the Pacific War with a romance thrown in there for good measure.

Visually, the film looks stunning. I've always had a hunch that if Luhrmann could apply just a small amount of restraint to his trademark movie aesthetic, we would be in for something truly special and this very well may be it. Also, Hugh Jackman as an outback cowboy might be the role he was born to play.
The film is set for release November 14. To see the trailer and let me know what you think, read more.

I've been waiting for a glimpse at this since they first announced it's production. I'm a huge Luhrmann fan (and I'm a big Jackman fan as well)...I can't wait to see this!
1i LOVE hugh jackman but this looked sort of boring. Hopefully it'll have a good story
2Can't. Wait!
3can't wait! love baz. love nic. and LOVE hugh! yummy
4sorry for the yummy comment but i couldn't restrain myself. was visualizing hugh on the beach with his hot bod.
5I can't wait for this. I really love Baz Luhrmann's eye for stunning visuals. And this looks like it will hopefully lack some of the cheese that makes me not able to sit through Moulin Rouge now.
6wow! looks spectacular! i just hope that the aboriginal people aren't stereotypically portrayed.
7looks interesting
8Well it looks like it could go either way. I'll have high hopes though because I love Luhrmann's other movies (yay Strictly Ballroom!)
9It looks very 'Out Of Africa'
10Yuck I won't be wasting any money on this one.I bet it will do well in Australia but bomb over here just like most of Kidman's movies do
11This looks good. I love Baz! And it'll be interesting to hear Nicole Kidman speak in her natural dialect. Even in interviews she plays it down!
12I really can't wait to see this!
I'm a huge Nicole Kidman fan!
I think this film would be great, since it was directed by Baz Lhurman!
I love Hugh too!
ha ha..
I really can't wait to see this, can't wait!
I like to learn Nicole Kidman's accent..
as a whole, I'm a hundred percent sure that this movie will rock!
13Wow! Can't wait. A dream matchup of two of the best actors from Australia. WIth no disrespect for Cate Blanchett
14I'll see it just for Hugh Jackman alone. Don't get me wrong, I like Nicole and Baz...but that Hugh makes me swoon.
15WOW! I loved Moulin Rouge and Nicole is my favorite actress. Hugh isn't too bad for the eyes, too. This is visually stunning. Can't wait for this movie!
16Australia trailer is awesome! Hugh Jackman is HOT! I already love this movie. Hugh Hugs, Nancy B
17Haha, what's up with the Chinese characters at the end of the preview (yet another IP violation?). I was a little distracted by the music (I think it's from Henry V soundtrack), and I'm not sure about the storytelling part, but I'm looking forward to the film as I love Baz, Nicole, and Hugh.
18Wow! I got goose pimples just looking at the trailer.
19Nicole looks so gorgeous!
Yeaahh!!!
can't wait!!!!!!!!!
20I'm sorry but this looks very over the top to me. The dialogue is horrible and Nicole Kidman's delivery is wooden to say the least. I know she's supposed to be British but the faux Mary Poppins is yuk.
21Cinematography does look great but I hope the rest of the production is a lot more naturalistic than the scene with the child, that made me laugh out loud.
Hugh Jackman is The Drover and he is the real star of this movie. Hugh is Sexy and Gorgeous! This is a beautiful and great movie and there is already Oscar Buzz.
22Nicole and Hugh will be awesome together. Can't wait!
23I am the biggest fan ever of hugh jackman and I hope he will earn an Oscar for this! The movie seems to be fantastic and it could be the film of the year, a great hit both at the box office and the upcoming Academy Awards. Luhrman and Kidman are a guarantee but there is noone like Jackman. He is the most talented actor of his age and by far the most handsome hollywood star ever. I know I'm going to see Australia twice when it hits the big screen...
24I love Baz Luhrman, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, I can't think of anything better than this! And I'm sure I'll love Australia after the movie!
25Does anyone know the name of the song playing during the Australia trailer?
26marthix, Hugh Jackman has an Oscar in his future. I am a big fan too.
27So... the song on the trailer Australia knocked my socks off. Gave me the chills big time. I had to watch it a few times on tivo. Well, thank goodness for V cast song id w/ the verizon phone envy. That thing is a lifesaver. Been trying to find the song for a while, but then I thought, who knows, my phone might know. Anyway, the song on the trailer is called The Only Moment We Were Alone, by Explosions in the Sky. Rock Out!
28Are you guys idiots? You said you couldn't wait to hear Nicole in her natural dialect, but she plays a british woman in the movie. Also, you say u think you'll will love australia after this move, but remember this movie is set like 60 years ago and doesn't necessiarily represent what austrlia is like today, and no, not every australian has that strong of an accent, hugh puts it on because thats how they spoke that long ago. I'll go see it because of the storyline not because of hugh, u guys would never go see it unless he was in it.
29To SWEETNERS:
The song on the trailer was the same song on the movie ROMEO + JULIET - "The Balcony Scene". I don't know the composer but maybe that information will help. When I first saw the trailer, that song was bugging me and I couldn't remember where I'd heard it.
30Can't wait to see the movie.
