Right on the heels of starring in the No. 1 movie at the box office, Ben Barnes has landed another gig — and it's a doozy. The adorable Prince Caspian will play the title character in a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Oliver Parker is "planning to make a visceral, dark horror story and says the themes of stardom are as relevant as ever."
That was my immediate thought as well, that the book's themes of vanity and the desire for everlasting youth and beauty seem to be incredibly relevant to today's world (especially in American society, though Dorian Gray does not take place in America). I had to read this novel in college and I'm so glad I did. It's a riveting — and often scary — read. If you haven't read it, this is the plot description: "Dorian Gray is a young man of impossible physical beauty whose portrait — painted by the artist Basil Hallward — becomes connected on an occult level with the workings of his soul. Drawn into a corrupt and sensual life by the dissolute Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian remains young and beautiful, while the painting ages in his stead, ultimately becoming a monstrosity."
Have you read this work by Oscar Wilde? What do you think of this movie news?

There already is a film version of the portrait of dorian gray. It's old but it was a good one, black and white except the end. I love love love love this book and I like the old film, so I just hope they don't mess this up! I can only picture Ben Barnes with his weird Caspian accent so it's hard for me to see him as Dorian.
1oh how I love this book
I don't know Ben Barnes (I'm not a Narnia person), so his being cast doesn't mean anything to me yet.
However, the fact that they're really making another film version of The Picture of Dorian Gray is wonderful news! I've been looking forward to this for awhile. It's one of my favorite books. It is still very relevant. Whenever I read it, it reminds me of someone I've known.
And I love that the story has men desiring eternal youth as power, not women for once!
Like Renees3, I also think there's a lot of pressure for them not to mess the story up with this new movie. The previous movie was quite good.
2I also liked the book. It is quite dark considering that Wilde was most well known for his lighthearted fluff pieces (like The Importance of Being Earnest).
3I absolutely loooved this book! Looking forward to the new movie...i remember watching the old, black and white version which was good!
4oo I loved this book and think a new movie adaptation will be great.
5this looks like it could be very interesting. I think that a movie of this book is a good idea for the reasons which you have outlined Buzz! I haven't yet seen the new Narnia, but this guy looks very handsome and like a plausible Dorian Gray. I hope this means that hollywood has another, different male that can be a lead. i am so bored with a lot of the actors these days.
6Whaaaaa? That boy's no Dorian Gray! |:
7This is one of my favorite novels of all time. Can't wait to see the new movie!
8Wow. I'm curious to see the interpretation to movie, the novel is dark and gothic (just the way I love it
). I've never seen the previous/first movie made out of it.
9I think he might make a perfect Dorian Gray!!!
PS: He is quite handsome, and perhaps this will help him shake the "teen-heartthrob" label, as he is a 26 year old man.
10He is hot too bad he is married.
11I also loved this book. I've seen the old black and white film, and look forward to seeing this version as well.
12I read most of the book (but didn't get around to finishing and I read it for fun, not for school) and don't really have an opinion about casting, but I do know that I prefer it not be someone from Hollywood to play him. And I don't just mean that because he's British (referring to Dorian Gray, not the actor).
13Oh, and I forgot to say that I'm more curious how it will look depending on who the director/cinematographer is. I hate when movies look really generic and you can't even tell who it's by.
14I've always wanted to read the book. This movie will give me another incentive to do it! I flew through The Da Vinci Code before the movie came out.
According to imdb, Barnes doesn't appear to have a lot of films under his belt, not to say that he won't be able to carry this film...so I guess we'll see how the film turns out.
And what? He's married?
15Oooh Ben Barnes is so handsome, but it is hard to judge his acting based only on Stardust and Prince Caspian. I remember reading the Great Illustrated Classics version of The Picture of Dorian Gray, but I don't fully remember what its about. It seems pretty interesting though.
16JessNess - HE'S MARRIED? Bummer. How do you know that? I know this is not the same thing, but I remember there were rumors that Jim Sturgess (from Across the Universe) was married but he said that he was single on Jimmy Kimmel.
17I think that he is a good actor to play Dorian, but in the novel, Dorian was supposed to be blonde. I've read this book and enjoyed it thoroughly! And I agree with the comment above about a version made in the 1930s, it was riveting...I hope this one lives up to the the legacy.
18Ben's not married!!! He's 26 and he's single. I read it in Elle Magazine with Madonna on the cover. As for his weird accent in Narnia was because he was playing the role of Caspian with a Spanish accent. He's British though so there you go.
19HE'S NOT MARRIED! he's waiting for me
20I love him! I watched Prince Caspian, and I'm not a fan, but my this heart of mine fell for Ben!
21Sorry girls my source was wrong. He is still available for all of you to fight over
22I thought the book was very good and I can see him in the role.
23People are really up Ben Barnes' ass already about this movie. Too bad he's so pretty, daaaaaaammmmmnnnnn. I honestly think he'll be brilliant!!
24AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
25I've read the picture of Dorian Gray after knowing that Ben Barnes was going to play this roll.so, the Dorian in my imagination(Ben) was irresistible, gorgeous and sweet that i can't wait to watch the film. and, i hate when people compare him with Orlando Bloom. o.b. IS NOT SO HOT AS BEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
