My major problem with this episode of Grey's Anatomy can pretty much be summed up by its title: "The Becoming." All the characters still seem stuck. This whole season is supposedly about change, as the promos remind us each week. But here we are, with only two episodes and three hours of Grey's left, and we're still just in the "becoming" phase. I'm ready for some being.
This episode did advance some characters' stories, however slowly: Cristina, Bailey, and Mark — Mark! — had some touching moments. I'd like to say Meredith is ready to make a change, too, but I've been burned on that before. To see my thoughts and add your own, just read more.
As far as Meredith is concerned, what's our big takeaway? That she's delusional? She insisted it was going to be a good day, that she was going to put all her feelings about Derek behind her. And of course that wasn't going to work; every time Meredith has tried to bury it all inside, she's ended up worse for it (including, you know, dead). There's just no way to deny their chemistry when they're "exactly in sync." (How many times, by the way, did that phrase need to be said?) I'm glad Meredith's therapist called her a coward — even if that final scene with them fell a little flat. If Addison's push last week didn't convince her to fight, maybe this one will.
I will say that Grey's had its first scene in a while to make me teary: when Derek showed up with the champagne and told Meredith they'd open it when they have their first success in the trial and toast to all the lives they've lost. Man, I'm a sap.

Speaking of Derek, any hope I'd had that they might try to develop Rose went out the window as soon as we found out Derek and Rose slept together. I thought she wanted it to be special, but instead, we didn't see or hear a thing about it besides Rose requesting some paperwork! Did she get shamed into sleeping with him because everyone else had obviously had intra-hospital sex? That would be interesting, if we were supposed to care about Rose. Which we aren't. So . . . moving on.
The sex forms gave Cristina and Bailey two of their finest moments. Bailey first: She's always prided herself on keeping her personal life private, but now that she's single, the idea that she couldn't possibly be sleeping with someone at work takes on a new meaning. Meanwhile, Cristina spent the whole episode not talking about Burke's award (and singing "Like a Virgin" while slicing open bodies) until blurting out her whole "I was his hand, and now I'm a ghost" speech. Granted, it was a little on-the-nose, but Cristina has a history of that (see also: "I used to have an edge"), so I'm willing to let that ride for the sake of seeing her deal with the difference between who she was with Burke and who she is now.
Some other thoughts:
- Mark's plotline with the nurses was supposed to be minor and light until the read-through, when Eric Dane made it so emotional. It was fascinating to watch his bravado break down from the masculine high of "Everything I do is consensual . . . some of them even begged for it."
- Did anyone else want to slap Meredith when she announced she was in therapy right in the middle of Cristina's breakdown?
- Also, did anyone else think at first that maybe, just maybe, the Chief didn't want Bailey to fill out a form because the two of them had slept together?
- It just doesn't seem wise for George to know the sexual history of everyone at Seattle Grace. Don't they have HR?
- Alex telling the kids about Snow White dying (but not really!) both made me laugh and broke my heart. He's just so scared that he's not going to be a good dad.
Your thoughts? Anyone else desperate for some action? Sick of wasting time on Rose? Ready for Alex's dark secrets to emerge?

im with you buzz, i was kinda thinking that the Chief and bailey did sleep together. At some point i was thinking that Izzy was going to tell Alex about the fake pregnancy but was glad she didnt. Cant believe that Alex forgot he slept with Lexy and her reaction was awesome!
1i was thinkin the same this about bailey and cheif...i was like..nooo
2just can't wait till they put mer/der together finally! the chemistry really is still there and they miss each other! so put them together already! love that scene when they were "in sync"
as for rose, i think she ended up sleeping with derek becoz of what Mark has said to her.. don't really care about her character, maybe if there wasn't the writers' strike her character would have developed more but for now, i just want her off asap!
buzz i disagree with you though, i thought when mer telling cristina that she's in therapy, she was trying to help. becoz cristina is always about winning and showing her that she isn't a loser like she thinks she is (becoz she's trying to deal with burke), i think mer was just trying to help her in ways she can think of.
i felt a bit bad for hann when she was telling torres that it was really hard for her to make friends and all. maybe torres over-reacted.
over all i think last week's episode was better than this.. cant wait till next week's episode though!
3i'm still a bit baffled about this show. i stopped watching it before the strike - way before the strike becuase i just wasn't into the plot lines. they weren't developed enough and it was blah and dull. now that i'm watching again, i want so many things to happen and i feel like we're on the edge of something good but that they aren't pushing the envelope anymore.
the whole mark is a person too thing started to work...but i don't know. it didn't go far enough.
christina getting all upset about burke - that was finally along the right lines of emotion. she really is a GREAT actress and it's nice to see her get a monologue or whatever
so we all know what's going to end up w/ meredith - i just want it to get to that point already. i suppose that i don't have too much more to wait since the season is almost over - but still ...2 weeks is too much waiting for me!
4The Chief and Baily????? nooooo...ya think?!
5i hate this show. sometimes i watch it but i hate it. i especially don't like meredith, what a boring weepy lead character. bring back alex and izzy, i always wanted them to work out.
6I like that Meredith’s therapist called her out on being a coward and think that it wasn’t so much the scene as flat as Meredith. She seemed to be missing a little umph with her “Are you calling me a coward” lines.
I think the only reason that Rose slept with Derek was because of what Sloan said when she was in the elevator. I agree Buzz, this episode made Rose’s role smaller.
I didn’t once think that Bailey and the Chief slept together and would HATE it if they tried to introduce that story line.
Cristina had a great episode.
If something is going to happen with Derek and Meredith (especially physically) I really hope that they first end the relationship between Derek and Rose.
7Just because they have never stopped loving each other doesn’t make it ok to keep cheating on the new people in their lives (ie, Addison, McVet –what was his name!).
I thought that the Chief was trying to make it seem like he and Bailey had slept together since his wife was there. I feel so bad for Bailey since her husband left her! But at least we are seeing her being more of a mom, and little Tuck is just so cute! I'm glad too that Izzie didn't tell Alex about the baby, or that there isn't a baby. Although what Rebbecca is doing to him sucks, but its developing him more as a character and making him take more responsibility, though I wonder how he will act when and if he finds out that she is lying to him.
As for Meredith and Derrick, I think that its good that she is trying to move on, or at least get herself together before they get back together. Its never gonna work unless she is ready and stops pushing her away. I think that she has to accept that Derrick moved on before she can fight to get him back.
And I LOVE Christina, and I totally get how she just doesn't know what to do with herself now that Burke is gone and then having all of his success flaunted in her face like that when she was the one who helped him get it. I loved her scene--it almost made me cry.
Loved the episode, can't wait to see what happens in the last 2.
8I just REALLY want Alex to come out and for us to find out about his supposedly "dark" past!!!!!! Its been 4 friggin seasons!
on a side note, I loved the part where Derek and Meredith were practising injecting the virus into the fake brain. It was all so romantic and magical (even though it was in a surgical room lol).
I can't believe there are only 2 episodes left :|
9Its so funny that Katherine is talking about leaving the show, because she wasnt in this one much (or was she) and i didnt care. She could have been written out, and i wouldnt have blinked.
I cried when the soldier had to say goodbye to his boyfriend, but he was already dead....really showed Meredith that her thinking about "dereks tongue in my mouth" is petty and childish and she needs to think about never kissing him again for real, and either fix herself or move on
10The episode was sooo long....I watch but it's torture.
I was disappointed in the continued confusion of the characters with plots that seem to have gotten off track this season whether it be the writer's strike or just poor writing....
Anyone else totally seeing the beginnings of George and Lexi?
11I thought the whole "filling out the form of who you slept with" was really dumb.
I didn't like how the Chief singled Bailey out. I don't think they've slept with each other, but it made me wonder if the Chief had feelings for her. But now I see he only has eyes for Adell!
Can someone PLEASE get Rose a new coat? I really hate that ugly brown furry coat and it makes me like her even less
Good for Christina. I'm glad she brought it to the attention that Hahn (who I still think is gay) treats her like dirt and refuses to teach her
12Chief and Bailey... definitely did not sleep together. He's in a sense like a father figure to her so he just stated the obvious. George was just stupid for announcing it that way. He should have just said oh you don't need it Bailey and kept it moving. He got all loud about her being the ONLY one that Chief SINGLED OUT that didn't need one. Well, he stomped all over her pride. In the words of my friend... THAT'S THE QUICKEST WAY! And she exploded in her Bailey way and it was great. Whew man, she had me with that speech.
Christina, man, I feel for her on that one. I need Burke to make an appearance, a phone call, something so she can have it out! Treating her like a side chick not giving honor where it's due. Lol. Okay maybe not a side chick. Lol.
Izzy holding out on Alex. As much as I'm proud of her for keeping it private, it's killing me! HA!
Mere... she did right by telling Christina that she's in rehab. I agree with Cupcake on that. Her psych calling her out. I'm glad. I don't think the scene fell flat because Mere reacted as a coward. Her angry isn't forceful or powerful.
Derek
He better be a gentleman and not cheat. Good grief, just for once will they not
completely hurt someone. Please surprise me.
13Um, rehab... lol I meant therapy.
blue... I didn't like that coat either!
14I really didn't care for this episode at all...I did like the part with Mark though.
15I just cried through-out the whole episode.
16It's that time of month, must be the hormones
Gosh when the episode ended I just thought "I can't wait until next week!" I know some people get sick of the slow pace but I really did love it. If you've ever tried to change some part of you that you hate, you know that Meredith's character was spot on! You try to tell yourself you're okay with something because you don't think you can actually change and fix it. I was so crushed when Derek was just standing there saying "I'll stay if you just tell me to" and she said no. Say yes Meredith!! You can tell the more professional she is and the better doctor she is the more he's attracted to her on an intellectual level. And I actually would be sad if Izzy left because this was the first episode in forever where she was a professional, responsible doctor and wasn't super whiny/emotional/up in everyone else's business.
Buzz, or anyone, did you think Hahn might still be a lesbian the way she laughed so awkwardly and never said she wasn't?
17I found the patient who was waiting for the heart transplant, and her husband, EXTREMELY annoying. I don't know their parts were badly written or badly acted, but... ugh.
The soldier's story was really touching and well done, though.
18I liked this episode. I felt bad for Cristina- Burke never gave her any closure and now that isn't going to happen with Isaiah coming back.
19Mark was good and I am really liking him. So glad he called out Rose. I can't believe the wench had the nerve to approach George about the form with everyone there- she reallly is annoying (more than Lexie).
Derek, stop already!!! I just wanted to slap him with the in sync thing, the "I'll stay if you want me to" and the champagne. Why do we keep dancing around this relationship-I guess because there wouldn't be a show, right
I do not believe there was anything between Chief and Bailey- he thought he was protecting her but he was just making her feels worse.
I was touched by the Hahn thing and how she doesn't make friends easily- I think she is just misunderstood.
So only saw the last few minutes of this show as I had the channel on in anticipation of LOST....I really don't understand what is appealing about this show. It seems to dumb down people AND I have to say that the therapist in the show is nothing like a real therapist and it is somewhat insulting as a psychology major that the way psychotherapists are portrayed is consistently wrong or negative. A therapist would NEVER treat a client that way!!!
20I can't say I'm sick of Rose yet, because every minute that Derek and Meredith aren't alternately having sex and whining at each other is a minute that I can try to forget the drowning episode and every other ridiculous moment that has happened because of their f-upped relationship.
Do I sound bitter? Yes. But dear Lord, those two are annoying together.
21Rose slept with Derek because of what Mark told her by the elevator. How he hated women like her who think that sex is some kind of reward when they are just afraid that the guy will lose interest after having sex with them.
I love the scene with Christina and her speech, same thing with the mer/der and that special bottle of wine.
Maybe Rose should sleep with George. Seriously.
22as commitment-phobic as mere is with derek, i stil like her better then rose. i feel the same way about izzy, if her character didnt break georges marriage, i wouldve liked her more.
23and i want izzy to tell karev that rebecca is pulling a fast one! poor guy, messing with his mind like that
Do we know if Rebecca knows she isn't pregnant? Is it possible she has some condition that makes her think she is, and she's not intentionally trying to deceive?
I thought the forms were stupid and no business would hand such confidential info to a regular employee. The heart patient was annoying.
Christina is way under-utilized in the series. Mark sounding like he might actually care was a different twist.
Izzy and Meredith are so whiney and self absorbed. I wish they would both fall into the ocean. I don't see chemistry between McDreamy and Grey and wish they would just move on. I like Rose because she seems smarter, more decisive, witty and appreciates him.
24This was the first episode I've truly liked in a really long time. I cried so much (especially when the soldier died) and I called all my friends only to hear them sniffling too. That's the sign of a great episode. It seems like the writers are getting a good rhythm again. I like the characters even when I hate them.
25Yeah, I DID think that Bailey and the chief had a thing lol.. That's what they wanted us to think! Anyhow, Cristina's lack of lines made her speech so much more meaningful. She didn't say anything, aside from her thank you to Meredith, and her singing up until the speech about Burke. That was GENIUS.
Actually that does make sense, that Rose would want to fill out the paper just to say she did it, but we all know it's because of what Mark said.
Callie and Hahn, I'm getting a feeling that Hahn isn't as straight, but after her speech, she's proving otherwise.
Meredith and Derek.... It's gonna happen..... I hope soon though
26First off, I might be alone in this, but I'm over DerMer. I wanted them to develop Rose's character and make her really fight for him. They have basically wasted our time with that entire plot line. Moving on, of all the times for Izzie to grow a pair, it's now. Tell him that chick is lying, I mean you killed Denny. But, now you care about ethics. Anyway, I still hate George as much as ever, whiners he and Meredith. More McSteamy. I'm sure they are going to make him grow a heart or something soon. I think they should let McSteamy and Bailey have a moment, that'd be interesting.
27Okay, I have to get this off my chest....but Eric Dane "McDreamy" sucks as an actor, he always sounds like he's reading his lines.....and delivers with a lack of emotion.....I'm still a big fan of Derek and Meredith...George drives me up a wall....and surprisingly...Izzie is not as annoying since the show returned.
28yea, i thought Bailey and the chief had something going on...but i hope it's not true.
29I was so-so about this episode. I feel like the episodes since the strike haven't been as dark, so that's good.
I don't like Izzie at all; it doesn't even seem like she and George are together anymore. I definitely see something developing between George and Lexy. I mean, he was in love with Meredith for so long and Lexy is her sister, so next best thing, right?
I really liked Cristina in this episode. For once, it seemed like she was actually affected by something and was a real person instead of this career-driven robot. And I thought Meredith screaming out that she was in therapy was her way of shaking Cristina to get her to listen. They both just always bury their problems, so I think Meredith was trying to say, "Look - I know we both have this way of not dealing with our issues, but I'm finally trying to deal with mine. You can, too." And I loved Cristina's speech at the end. How she said, "It's not difficult. It's unbearable."
I was REALLY hoping that the soldier would be the first clinical trial patient to make it. His story was so, so sad.
Meredith needs to just admit that she wants to be with Derek. Just get over yourself already and be vulnerable and accept that someone loves you. But I do agree that Derek and Rose need to break up first. And they should develop Rose's character more.
I like Alex and McSteamy in this episode more than usual. It showed an emotional side to both of them finally. Also, I felt bad for Hahn as well. I think maybe she does have feelings for Callie, but more just wants a friend.
30I really want Preston Burke to come back to the show. He was one of my favorite characters.
And I still think Erica Hahn is gay. Actually, I've always thought of her as that, ever since she appeared on the show.
31uhh biz:
'Okay, I have to get this off my chest....but Eric Dane "McDreamy" sucks as an actor, he always sounds like he's reading his lines.....and delivers with a lack of emotion.....I'm still a big fan of Derek and Meredith...George drives me up a wall....and surprisingly...Izzie is not as annoying since the show returned.'
do you mean Eric Dane "McSteamy"...... or Patrick Dempsey "McDreamy"
32that's quite confusing
