It's been a few days, and I still haven't been able to get my head around the notion that Tristan Wilds from The Wire is joining the cast of the 90210 spinoff. I'm so used to seeing him as this hardened, tough little boy on the streets of Baltimore that it's going to be a challenge to see him among the glitz of posh Beverly Hills — and, to some extent, he's just always going to be Michael.
I can think of a lot of other actors who, like Wilds, so embodied their characters for me that I have a hard time changing the way I think of them. Will and Grace has been off the air for a couple of years now, and I still can't see Megan Mullally as anything but Karen Walker. When Gio pops up on Ugly Betty, it takes me a minute to remember why Freddy Rodriguez isn't in a funeral home a la his Six Feet Under character. And we all know that Jared Padalecki will always be Dean to me.
Felicity Huffman just talked to the Hollywood Reporter about this issue, saying that when you're on a weekly series, "You go into acting jail for a number of years afterwards because people are so tired of your face," and when you get offers, they're all similar to the roles you just played. This is probably the biggest problem on TV, where we can check in with characters weekly, but it can also happen with particularly memorable movie roles (just think of how many people immediately thought of "the lotion girl" from Silence of the Lambs when Brooke Smith joined Grey's Anatomy ). So tell me: Which actors will always just be a certain character to you?

GUESS
I don't actually associate people with one character for the most part. Maybe a little bit with Micheal Cera since I've mostly only seen him in Arrested Development, but if I were an actor I would hate to be too associated with one character. Then people who do castings except you to play a certain type of character, which would be really boring, pointless and frustrating.
1Jennifer Anniston (sp?) for sure as Rachel
2David Schwimmer will always always always be Ross to me. So is Matthew Perry.
3Definitely Megan Mullally as Karen but that's a hard character to top. Karen was absolutely hilarious.
I always see Steve Carell as Michael Scott which is good/bad because I'm sure Steve is 100 times smarter than Michael!
I think Freddy Rodriguez could do alot better than "Betty"! He's hot.
4Adam Brody will always be Seth Cohen.
5Everyone from Dawson's Creek! Kaite Holmes as Joey, Joshua Jackson as Pacey, Michelle Williams as Jen and James Van Der Beek as Dawson!
This is also true for everyone in Gilmore Girls especially Dean and Rory...
6That's hilarious because we JUST watched the Seinfeld episode where Megan Mullaly was on and she was almost completely unrecognizable.
7All six of the "Friends." They will always be Joey, Ross, Chandler, Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe to me.
8Megan will ALWAYS be the squeaky, divine, pharmy-connected, booze swilling Mz. Walker!
9I'm just now getting to where I can refer to Alyson Hannigan as anything other than "Willow." Loving her as Lily on How I Met Your Mother, but she's Willow in my heart.
10James Gandolfini will always be Tony Soprano to me.
11Alexis Bledel can only be Rory. and Lauren Grahm can only be Lorelai.
12so true juliarose, same goes for Luke and Emily.
13Kieffer Sutherland will always and forever be Jack Bauer. When he was going through the drunk driving arrests (or whatever it was like a year ago), I couldn't handle the man-who-saves-the-day being stuck in a foolish and sticky situation!
14Sarah Jessica Parker will always be Carrie Bradshaw.
15I'm with jopperma about the Dawson's Creek cast. Also, the cast of Saved by the Bell.
16"Donna Martin Graduates!!!"
17Keri Russell = Felicity 4 Eva!!!
18Mischa Barton will always be Marrissa because she kind of sucks at everything else...
19I'm with Julia, I can't imagine the characters from Gilmore Girls anywhere else. I remember when I saw Lauren Graham in Bad Santa a few days ago, I kept thinking Lorelai would never do that
20I agree with you about Megan Mullally on Will & Grace and with JuliaRose23 about the actresses who portray the Gilmore Girls. I think its also because these shows were on for sooo long and they have several qualities that make them similar to their characters.
The same goes for the cast of Friends - no matter what they say (ahem, David Schwimmer), they are similar to their characters just not quite as exaggerated. Except maybe Matt LeBlanc, but I don't really know he is in real life.
21Rodney Dangerfield. Caddyshack.
22All the characters from Full House. ♥
23Tom Cruise. I mean, Tom Cruise and Oprah. Or Oprah and Tom Cruise. Wait! Now I'm confused.
24I agree with all of the ones above...Friends, Gilmore Girls, etc. But I will add the cast of That 70s Show. No matter how many bad rom coms he does, Aston will always be Kelso.
25Neil Patrick Harris = Doogie Howser, M.D.
26McDreamy. He's just so great in that role. I want him to be Derek all the time!
27Kerri Russell and Scott Speedman will always be my Felicity and Ben.
And Jason Dohring can never top Logan Echolls. Best character ever on television.
28I'll never be able to think of Jennifer Aniston as anyone but Rachel
29All the 6 Friends people, even Gunther not that I've seen him in anything, but if I did. And all the main people from The OC. I'm slowly coming round to Calista Flockhart not being Ally McBeal in Brothers and Sisters.
30Smidge will always be Buffy to me.
31adam and rachel as seth and summer
32Oh man, all I could think when I saw Brooke Smith on Grey's Anatomy (and in In Her Shoes for that matter) was, last time I saw you, you were kidnapping the freak's dog and slathering lotion on yourself. So funny.
33It is really hard to get Adam and Rachel out of your head as Seth and Summer. And for that matter most of the people on that show.
Adam Baldwin! Every time I see him on Angel or Chuck I still call him Jayne from Firefly.
34@popcorn you are SO right about jack bauer! When ever Keifer is in the news I always call him Jack! Like, "did you see that youTube clip where Jack Bauer tackles a christmas tree?"
35I still refer to Milo V as "Jess," whether its on Heroes or in red carpet shots. He will always be Jess. Same with Rory. And I still want them to be together!
Everyone on Arrested Development, too. Buster and Gob, and George Michael -- but mostly because Michael Cera seems to be so much like George Michael (in a good way!).
I'd also like to throw out that in the future we'll never be able to see anything but Kenneth in that guy from 30 Rock. Some people are just too good at creating a character.
36Kristen Bell is Veronica Mars to me
37All the Gilmore Girls characters will always be just them to me. I can't see Alexis as anyone else but Rory for example
38Jared Padalecki will always be Dean as well as Lauren Grahm will always be loreli(even in Bad Santa i was like NOOOOOOOO Loreli!!) Heck I think everyone from Gilmore Girls! Even the actress who played Sookie on Samantha Who Im like its Sookie!!
Umm...Katie Holmes & Joshua Jackson will always be Joey & Pacey
Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling
Will always be Ally & Noah!
The one im the worst with though is Eddie Cibrian back when i was in middle school & High School i would watch Sunset Beach (i know i know) and he played Cole...and ever since then he is always Cole wether he is in third watch or ugly Betty!
39The Harry Potter kids will always be the Harry Potter kids.
40@colormesticky: Your so right.
41I am old enough to always consider Neil Patrick Harris to be Doogie Howser. And yes, I am appropriately embarrassed by that.
42Malcolm Jamal Warner will always be Theo Huxtable!!! Jasmine Guy will always be Whitley Gilbert and Khadeem Hardison will always be Dwayne Wayne!!! Oh and of course the cast of Saved By the Bell will never be able to shake those characters.
43Topher Grace will always be Eric Foreman
44Mila Kuniz will always be Jackie Burkhart
Ashton Kutcher will always be Michael Kelso
Danny Masterson will always be Steven Hyde
Laura Prepon will always be Donna Pincaoti
Wilmer Valderama will always be Fez
Don Stark will always be Bob
Kurtwood Smith will always be Red
I don't remember her name but she will always be Kitty
Katie Holmes will always be Joey
Joshua Jackson will always be Pacey
James van der Beek will always be Dawson
Michelle Williams will only be Jen to me on occasion
Rachel Bilson will always be Summer Roberts
Adam Brody will always be my fav character Seth Cohen
i think ANY of the characters from FRIENDS...or Arrested Development...even Jason Bateman sometimes. Definitly when I see characters from The Office in other things its very wierd. Same goes with Gilmore Girl, and not JUST Dean. Its weird to see Lauren Graham not being Loralie or Milo on another show, and definitly alexis bledel as rory! Oh and I agree with the people who said That 70's Show and Harry Potter
45Buzz!!! Jared is Sam Winchester, not Dean! But both he and Jensen Ackles will always be the Winchester boys to me, and Patrick Dempsey will forever be referred to as "McDreamy" regardless of what he does with his career.
