Here's the No. 1 thing I learned from this episode of Grey's Anatomy: I miss Addison. On Grey's, Addison always seemed to be someone who had it together, even when we knew she didn't. She was stronger and sharper-tongued than the version of her who turned up on Private Practice, and she brought something to the Grey's dynamic that no character has been able to replicate. So which Addison showed up for the return visit to Seattle Grace? To see my thoughts the episode, just read more.
As a whole, the episode seemed to be about expectations: that everything would be the same as it was when you left, that your friend is being friendly and not flirty, that when someone tells you they're pregnant they're not lying. Then the episode took each one of those expectations and shot it down.
A big part of that was Addison, who ended up being the catalyst for breaking a good number of those expectations. Sure, there were moments when she was her wishy-washy LA self — the hugging scenes, the thing about her aromatherapy candles, the weird change in her voice when she talked about how gosh-darn zen she is. But most of the time, I felt like I was watching the old, Seattle Addison, the one who didn't let people get away with anything. Meredith letting Derek leave? She needs a talking-to. Bailey bottling up her emotions? Unacceptable. Izzie still moping over not being a good doctor? Suck it up and "be Gandhi."
Cristina's lesson didn't come courtesy of Addison, but it's still a big one: Hahn will start liking her when she becomes less eager to please. No surprise that Cristina reminds Hahn of herself; I think Hahn just wants to watch Cristina figure it out the way she once did. That fit in well with Addison's talk with Izzie, which accomplished what the Chief's "you're a fighter" line couldn't do last week. All it took was a few words from Addie (and a reminder from George about being a boss) to make Izzie grab all her insubordinate interns and give them a real-world lesson in patient care.
As for Callie and Hahn, I'm curious to see how the show's going to handle this. I can't see them being a couple; I'd prefer to watch Callie navigate her realization that her new friend might be into her. Plus, Callie's desire to prove her straight-ness seems to be leading her into another round of inappropriate sex with Mark, which could be fun.
Some other thoughts:
- Best lines of the night, when Callie asked Meredith and Cristina if anyone ever thought they were a couple: "We screw boys like whores on tequila." "Then we either try to marry them or drown ourselves."
- Now that Izzie's medical niche has been found, let's see about getting her some friends, OK? She can't be friends with her interns, but she's also never going to be BFF with Mere and Cristina. Maybe the writers can find her a social life beyond googling recipes.
- Rose on McDreamy in the OR: "Six dates, heavy petting, lots of tongue, great guy. Scalpel?"
- I wanted to get behind the story of the baby with his heart beating outside his chest, but it was so poorly written and acted that I just couldn't. "Our baby is one of a kind, wearing his heart on his sleeve"? 'Scuse me while I vomit.
- Did Meredith want the surgery on the bear-mauling guy to work so that her clinical trial could have good results, or so that Jennifer could find love after all? A little of both?
- No matter how many times you say it, McSteamy, you're not God.
- Fake pregnancy! I figured Rebecca would lose the baby, not be lying about its very existence. I'm tiring of her overall, though; she really does just keep popping up like something from Fatal Attraction.
Your thoughts? Did you enjoy Addison's return? Who will be gone first: Rose or Rebecca? Discuss.

An excellent episode of Grey's makes me laugh really hard and also get teary a few times, and FINALLY this season they've pulled it off. By far, best episode of the season.
I want to comment on what you said about Rebecca's fake pregnancy. My friend called me after the show and was like "i can't believe she's lying about being pregnant!" Then I see here that that's what you got out of it too. Here's what I got: Izzy's patient with HIV was the one who wasn't pregnant. Therefore, Izzy did all of that "Ghandi" stuff and told that couple all of those things for nothing (very Izzy-like). She got ahold of Rebecca's chart and thought it was the girl with HIV. I really need for the whole thing to be clarified now that a second person has claimed Rebecca is lying about her pregnancy!
I love the Meredith-Derek drama. They're so Ross and Rachel.
1you know, i do think that she added a little something to the show - but there was so much going on that i just don't get - i do'nt know. maybe i should have watched the show more frequently than i have. we'll just have to see what happens.
i'm sure that kate was happy to be back to work even if it was just for one show since her show isn't coming back until the fall.
2shernic82 [+] : when the lab tech handed Izzie the results, he clearly stated "rebecca pope". That's how we know who exactly she was talking about. Go read the writer's blog about the episode at ABC.com, they go into detail about what they were doing in the episode (has a lot to do with Alex), but they make it very clear that it's Rebecca, not the patient with HIV.
3Ya I thought that it was the HIV positive girl that didn't end up being pregnant and my sister thought it was Rebecca.
I didn't see the whole episode so I thought maybe I'd just missed something.
4Maybe we'll find out next week?
how did you get that the HIV girl isnt pregnant. She told them they were and THEN addison had the talk with her because Izzy got yelled at by the HIV girl about wanting the abortion. Then Izzy got all "adult" and told them they could keep it. Why would she lie to them about having a baby (doesnt make sense)
Ava/jane doe is stalking Karev, thats obvious.
5One more thing, I wasnt happy about addison coming back, it was clearly a way to get her a paycheck while her show is on hiatus, because she added nothing.
6Here's the writers' blog entry about the Rebecca story, for anyone who's interested.
7I was so happy to see Addison back. I wish she would stay because I am not enjoying Private Practice at all. I think the best line of the night was when Addison was like "so who is the Mcrebound" or something like that...I died laughing. I also cannot believe that Hahn is totally gay. I hope they don't go down the path of having Hahn and Callie hook up because that would be too weird. I thought it was hilarious when Callie danced with Mark to kind of show that she liked men. I hate Rose beyond belief and I can't wait until her storyline is up. I also actually kind of like Rebecca. I wish she wasn't married or had a kid but she and Alex are good together. The whole George and Lexie being friends thing makes me sad because I see what the writers are doing. They are allowing George to develop a relationship with Lexie so that when Katherine leaves the show George's character won't be without a best friend. Anyways I loved the episode.
8McSteamy is friggin hysterical. He brings the much needed lightness to the show and I totally love it. He's just so inappropriately awesome.
9TOTALLY miss Addison! She needs to come back. Karev is so cruel but he is such a good character. It makes the show interesting. How could you say "So are you going to keep it or get an abortion?" Holy moly!
I too was shocked with Alex asked Rebbecca if she was going to keep it or get an abortion. But then when we found out she was lying at the end I was kind of over it.
I do however think that its an interesting way to learn more of Alex's story--like why is his guard always up, why does he think he would make a bad father, etc. I think Buzz was talking about the holes in his story last week after we got the whole Alex is an underdog convo between him and the chief. It will be interesting to see how that all plays out.
Did anyone else think it was hilarious when Christina showed up at lunch and was asking everyone about their feelings and trying to talk like a girl?
Overall, I thought it was a good episode. I laughed out loud a bunch of times and got a little sad and teary eyed a couple of times too!
10Like I said, I missed some parts of the episode.
But what I heard at the end was Izzy asking "my patient isn't pregnant"? So I thought she was referring to the HIV patient and that there had been a mix up...
So. I'm glad that's all cleared up.
Thanks for the link Buzz, I'd forgotten about that site!
I also really enjoyed this episode.
11It made me realize how much I miss Addison!
I agree Cakes, McSteamy adds such a fun element to the cast!!
I missed it!
I am not used to this whole 'new episodes' thing ...
12"We screw boys like wh*res on tequila." "Then we either try to marry them or drown ourselves."
i LOVED that line!!
13rebecca annoys me.. poor karev! i hope he finds out the truth soon, and i hope rebecca leaves the show for good.
im SOO happy addisons back.. at least for a few episodes! shes seriously the glue of the show. and i love the darker shade of hair, but i liked it red too!
cant wait for next thursday.
I LOVE GREYS!!
=) that is all
Here's my question: Why did rebecca go to the clinic for meds for morning sickness and let them take blood if she was faking it? That just seemed overly stupid. And what happened to her first baby?
14Addison needs to come back to Grey's full time...PLEASE!!!
And I can't stand Rebecca, I wouldn't mind Alex & Izzie getting back together.
15I miss Addison too, she was a much better fit than Erica...and the Cali thing has me cracking up...who hasn't experience someone crushing on you that you only felt like friends with. But the best lines of the night was "we screw boys like wh*res on tequila." I have had enough of the Rose thing. Oh yeah and the Rebecca story line can go too.
16when i watched the episode, my reaction to the ava thing was a lot different. after reading everyones comments, the idea seems to be that she's lying about it .. i saw it as she was wrong. maybe she did an at home test and got an innacurate result? because like jdots24 said, i think doing all that would be a bit much instead of just telling him and that's that .. hopefully they clarify a bit more for us next week! and addison coming back.. WOW. i've missed her, i love her character .. reading the writers blog, what she said about how addison walks down the hall in heels that any other woman would twist her ankle in, etc .. that is exactly how i feel about her! all in all, it was an aaamazing episode =) except i kind of wanted ava to be pregnant, i've always been rooting for her! ooh, and one more thing - ROSE HAS GOT TO GO!
17LOVED the "we scre boys like wh*res on tequila" "then we either try to marry them, or drown ourselves"
of Rose...
18LOVED McSteamy and his God complex
Liked Izzy's new hair do and lighter(funnier?)-the scene w/ addison and all those chips was funny...
HATED the whole Rebecca thing... STALKER!
**screw***
19one more thing, is it me, or is Callie a little too defensive and trying a little too hard to prove she's into penuses?
Maybe Rebecca thinks she is pregnant and has some kind of illness or tumor. It would be really stupid to fake pregnancy when the guy is a doctor, and take blood tests that you know his friends and colleagues have access to.
20I think maybe Rebeca/Ava thought she was pregnant and was wrong. Izzie can't tell Alex the truth because of the whole doctor patient confidentiality and Rebeca/Ava lies to keep Alex with her. Then Alex finds out and he's mad at Izzie for not telling him. Or Rebeca/Ava could be sick.
PS I miss Addison too. I really liked her on Grey's. I don't watch Private Practice.
21Great recap, Buzz. Loved having Addison back at Seattle Grace and thought the entire episode was one of the best in a long while. Callie does seem a bit defensive about her relationship/friendship with Hahn. I'm really anxious to see where they take this story line. I, too, am tiring of Rebecca; I'm not sure that she's lying though. As always, Bailey stole my heart and Christina made me laugh; she had some of the best lines last night. Good show.
22i was really happy to see addison back as well. i like her character at seattle grace much better than in LA. I too think the Rebecca story line should just go away...number one because i really don't like the actress who plays her and it just is an annoying story. i read the writers blog regarding that storyline and i can see how the story can be compelling and will be interested to see where it goes...but i only wish that they had a different actress. i feel so bad for bailey...i want her to find happiness! and i want derek and meredith to finally be together and be normal...let christina be all weird but let meredith heal and have a normal relationship with derek or bring another hottie onto the show to give her a good time.
23I agree.. I bet there's something wrong with Ava. Truthfully I love Karev the most and he is one of my favorite characters... I think something about knowing he's married and a father in real life that makes him super hot to me. I kind of feel like he asked if she was getting an abortion right away so he didn't get emotionally attached if the answer was yes. And my favorite part was the way Meredith just blurted into her therapist's office: "No wonder we didn't work!" I wish I could have a therapist at work where I could just spout things off so I could focus again!
24I think there's more to Rebecca's "pregnancy" than she's leading on because like someone said, she'd have to be an idiot to come into a hospital, and let them examine her, knowing she actually isn't pregnant. The scene at the end with Alex touching her belly broke my heart because it took him a bit to actually be ok with the idea of a baby...
I really miss Addison. Nothing against Private Practice, but I really think Seattle Grace is where she belongs. She has an edge without too much meanness and gives them all a kick in the ass when they need it.
The elevator scene was hilarious. I love Mark.
25McSteamy and and Callie are so sexy together!!! They need to hook up on a more regular basis none of that lesbian crap with Hahn just because she is bigger than the other women. Make Izzie a lesbian, that would be better and less obvious plus I don't like her with any of the guys they have picked so they might as well add a girl.
26Thanks for pointing me towards the writers blog. I was trying to access it earlier but couldn't for some reason. I must have just misunderstood what was said...if only Izzy had said, "so rebecca isn't pregnant?" instead of "so my patient isn't pregnant?" it would have been much more clear. craziness!
27so i don't watch the show really anymore because it has sucked since addie left but i don't watch pp either but i saw the last half of this episode since addie was on i love her to death she was so my fave but for the night i loved the scene in the elevator when mcsteamy said bet you're wishin you took the stairs about now was awsome
28Loved the episode.
Hate Rebecca. Go away.
Wish Addison would come back.
29I can't stand "Private Practice".
Better episode than last week's disaster...almost felt like the old Grey's is back...
Is it just me or is Meredith getting more annoying? Not so much in this episode as the last but still. She's almost...ALMOST as annoying as Susan from Desperate Housewives but I don't think another TV character can top that.
30You know, I was just upset Rebecca would try and fool Alex that way, but I didn't even think of the whole morning sickness thing. Like someone said above, why would she allow blood to be drawn and ask for a script. Alex could easily say who is your doc and let's look at your chart. Rebecca creeps me out, but something is wrong- I guess we'll learn more about Alex through all of this. Kallie was great and I am having fun watching her dance around all this Hahn stuff- trying to prove she is straight. McSteamy is sure happy to help! I really liked this week. Addison being back worked out pretty well and I liked her back. So nice to have something new to watch Thursday nights.
31What I thought was interesting about the episode was Mer/Der. My theory is that, through this clinical trial and Meredith really trying to come into her own as a doctor, they're trying to reset the stage for Meredith and Derek as a couple. A reset button, if you will. They do work well together and I think things will heat back up between them from there. Trying to get them back together any other way, given all of their drama up until this point, wouldn't work because there's way too much baggage.
32Ah, thank god for Addison and McSteamy, the rest of the characters just keep getting more and more annoying. Addison wasn't her ber b*tchy self, but it was great to finally have an interesting character on the show, or at least someone you care about.
I loved the lines you mentioned, Buzz, and the lift scene towards the end! However I cannot stand Izzie who's constantly whining, and Lexie is a major pain in the butt (and a terrible actress).
I just wished they had more of Meredith and Cristina when they're funny - I loved the first season when Cristina was overly bossy and Meredith kept sleeping around, instead of complaining all the time.
33I loved this episode so much. I really really miss Addison on that show.
34I loved it. Great to see Addison. Agree with the comments above that Meredith is just annoying. Also agree with those that think there is something wrong with Rebecca and she isn't simply faking that she's pregnant. I don't care for Rebecca but I am glad that there seems to be some decent story for Alex coming up in the next few episodes.
35LOVED this episode!! It was great
I really wish Addison would come back to GA. I don't watch PP ... couldn't get into it.
I want Mer and Der together.
Callie/Hahn thing was hilarious!!
"We screw boys like wh*res on tequila." "Then we either try to marry them or drown ourselves." Best lines!
The elevator thing had me laughing hard! I can't believe you didn't mention that Buzz!
Gah can't wait until next week! Anyone know when it's supposed to end for the season? It's going to be a long summer w/out GA
36aw, I miss Addison! loved this episode!! fantastic! the elevator scene was hilarious!
37i just finally got done watching grey's. such a great episode! i, too, was so glad to see addison back at seattle grace. she's not the same on private practice. this episode was hilarious and had some of the best lines i've heard in a long time. i love meredith and cristina. i'm glad i'm getting to see a lot more callie, and i think she and sloan are great together. not so sure what i think about her and hahn together though. i'm also glad that we're getting to see more of alex too. i don't find ava/rebecca and rose as annoying as everyone else. totally random thoughts, but i'm so glad that grey's is "back."
38I'm thinking Rebecca thinks she really is pregnant b/c she has symptoms but really it's a tumor or something. So maybe something could be going on there. But, then again she could have just wanted an excuse to see Alex. I think it's causing him to change though. That's what I saw about this episode. I think they might develop him more.
Now, Hahn, it all makes sense. Let's not forget the whole "Gentlemen's Club" thing previously. Callie, she's about to go crazy trying to prove her straightness. Lol.
Did anyone else catch Derek's handshake with Mere at the end!?!?! Rubbing her hand! Yeah, he's about to go through it with Rose and Mere.
Addison's return was nice. It served as a recap of what's going on and a glimpse into what's about to happen.
Over all... great episode! Just when I wanted to cry, I was ready to laugh at something else.
39This episode was so good! It felt like Season 1 again. I laughed hard in some parts, and got teary-eyed in others. I can't comment on everything, there were too many awesome lines/scenes. It was great.
