All hail John Favreau for rescuing the Summer blockbuster! Iron Man is the most fun I've had watching a movie in a long time. Going into the screening, I was wary of a premise centered around a giant robot superhero. I figured it would be a recipe for a lot of CGI and explosions and not much else, something any old director with a giant budget can churn out this time of year. However, as soon as the first scene opened, AC/DC's "Back in Black" guitar riff filled the theater and I got my first glimpse at Robert Downey Jr.'s acerbic smirk, something told me I was wrong.

If Spider-Man's alter ego is a dweeb and Batman's Bruce Wayne is kind of a "Debbie Downer," then the human inside this iron suit, Tony Stark, brings us a new kind of superhero: the coolest cat in the room. I haven't read the Marvel comic the movie is based on, but I think the cool factor has less to do with the original character and more to do with the spin director John Favreau puts on it — along with Robert Downey Jr.'s mesmerizing and nuanced performance.
Can you tell yet that I'm excited about this film? To see what else I loved and what I thought of the other performances from Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges, read more.
Our hero Tony Stark is a brilliant manufacturing magnate who is supplying the United States government with sophisticated and deadly weapon technologies. He has seemingly bought into the party line that without these weapons the world would be thrown into chaos and his company keeps everyone safe. We get to know Stark as a ladies' man who approaches just about everything, including charges that he is responsible for a lot of the world's suffering, with a largely irreverent outlook. He's charming, witty and arrogant, and watching Downey play him during this first part is a whole lot of fun.
This isn't to say that there aren't parts that, upon reflection, are fairly preposterous, like when Stark is captured by the bad guys in the Middle East who order him to make them a weapon and instead he builds a giant robot . . . in the desert. But it's a testament to how fun (and how well-made) this movie is that I totally didn't care about the absurdity.

I know I'm not the first to point out that anyone who has observed Downey's personal ups and downs will be able to see the similarities between him and his character. It's as if someone decided to make an allegorical comic book hero based on his life. Because of this inspired casting choice, Tony Stark's personal transformation into a superhero is more than just believable — it's downright moving. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between Tony and Robert Downey Jr. when his eyes well up and he realizes he should use his life to do good things with his unique talent.
Gwyneth Paltrow is wonderful as Stark's love interest/steadfast assistant, and Terrence Howard makes a great, straightlaced sidekick — first to Stark's hard-partying self, but later as someone who tries to understand his friend's new ambition to destroy all the weapons he supplied bad guys with. And then there is Jeff Bridges, who makes a marvelous, if prototypical, villain. This mature group of supporting actors, combined with a commanding lead actor and a director who leans heavily on story (not special effects) makes this one of the best movies you'll treat yourself to this year.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this!
1This movie was so good! Go see it. Robert Downey Jr. does an amazing job as a guy who doesn't really seem to care a whole lot about what is going on outside his world and looking kinda hot doing it. What is so awesome about his redemption is that his condescending communication style does not change after his transformation and it is actually charming in a cocky way.
Stan Lee's themes are timeless and universal. There are some subtle political overtones in this film about where to focus on in times of conflict. I also loved a scene between Downey Jr. and his rival where the rival says something to the effect that even though you make something you don't own it. I thought that was poignant considering Mr. Lee has had to go through so many court battles to retain rights to characters he has created that other people have profited on.
2I'm watching this tonight. I'm so excited!
3Obadiah was played by Jeff Bridges, not Jeff Daniels bb C:
4I cannot wait to see this! I usually avoid seeing movies on opening day but occasionally I just have to go with the big crowds...this is gonna be one of those times!
Robert Downey Jr. is one of the best actors out there and I'm so glad to see him back and getting fantastic roles.
5Wow I just got goosebumps reading that! RDJ is one of my favorite actors, his eyes are just so expressive.
6I try to see it on Wednesday but the teather was full!!! kids and kids everywhere, it was "children's day", on Wednesday the movies cost you half and on Thursday there was no school so... I didn't see it.
I see, well, almost see "before the devil knows you're dead", yeah I kind of feel bad... and kind of "i didn't like the movie" so I went out and start walking and walking outside the room and seeing if someone care about my little self and let me in on the Iron man movie, but didn't happen...
7ok for kiddos 5 & 8?
8My friends just drqagged me to see that yesterday and at first I wasn't convinced but by the end I was loving it! And I doubt you want to take your kids of 5 and 8 unless you are prepared to nswer a few uncomfortable questions...
9I would not take a 5 or 8 year old.. general violence, a pretty gut-wrenching part where a father is almost executed in front of his sobbing children, and RDJ is quite a womanizer so that might be kind of ewwww for them.
10I was like "wtf?? a lot of kids" and I don't believe Iron Man is a kids movie, and yet they only have it traslated to Spanish.
When here (in Mexico) a movie came traslated in spanish, is because it's a kids movies, if it is a normal movie it has subtitles.
No no, they bring it ONLY, AND ONLY traslated. I was like "hey, it isn't a kids movie!!! I want it in english!!!".They did the same with the X men movies...
11I agree with kia - it's rated PG-13, so probably OK for middle schoolers and up but not little kids.
12I have really been looking forward to this but then the previews made me not so sure. You have renewed my faith! Can't wait to see it now.
13It was great! My boyfriend had to drag me to see it, but I ended up enjoying the movie immensely. Robert Downey Jr. really made Tony Stark a super cool and funny character. Great movie.
14My comic book nerd friends tell me that RDJ portrays Tony Stark very closely to the way he is in the comic. I think he is perfect for the part and can't wait to see it.
15Wow, I went by the movie theatre in my neighborhood last night and there was a huge line around the block. Now I know what the Buzz was all about and can not wait to see it!! Thanks Buzz for keeping us all up to date and informed!!
16Somehow I was able to see this at 8pm on opening night.. Odd.
Anyway, this movie was amazing. That and I want Tony Stark's house. Hello awesome!
17Surprisingly this actually sounds good
18I'm excited to see this now.
P.S. Robert Downey Jr. is way sexy.
19Wow I was not really excited to see this, but I have changed my mind after hearing all of the good reviews. It seems like a really good cast and I love Jon Favreau as a director.
luvdaisy - the movie's PG-13 so I would probably think its not appropriate. I don't mean to sound judgemental, but it makes me so mad because I have seen sooo many little kids at PG-13 movies and preteens at R movies lately. I love kids but those ratings are there for a reason and the kids usually disrupt the movie. For instance, I saw sooo many 11 to 14 years old at Sweeney Todd (just because Johnny Depp was in it) and they didn't have a parent in sight. Needless to say, they were so surprised at the amount of blood. There was also a 5 to 7 year old little girl at Baby Mama when I saw it last week (although that movie wasn't too dirty or anything, from what I remember). I just think maybe the parents should hire a baby-sitter if they want to go out to see an adult movie.
20saw it - loved it
21I had no plans on seeing this but I've changed my mind after seeing all the great reviews.
22I JUST got back from seeing this movie. I loved it. Tony was the charming a$$ he was supposed to be and I really believed his transformation. There were a lot of parts where the whole audience laughed and quite a few cheers. Can't wait to see it again.
Oh, and if you haven't seen the movie yet stick around for the credits because there's a scene afterwards. Fans of the comic may appreciate it.
23I'm a fan of classic Marvel, so I was already planning on seeing it
24(hopefully tomorrow), but the way this review desctibes the opening
scene...ROWR!!! Count me in!
I saw this last night and absolutely loved it. And as far as the absurdity of some parts goes, I didn't mind at all, except for one small thing... wondering if anyone else noticed it. Towards the end of the movie, Gwenyth runs across a grated floor... in stilettos. Really?!
25LOVED IT! Absolutely loved it....will definitely be purchasing it when it comes out on DVD...and watching it multiple times
26I went with my boyfriend
27He was way more excited about thismovie than I was... yet it was who laughed at jokes and funny scenes!
After the movies finale he went up and started to leave, I grabbed his arm and asked him to stay, just in case there was a scene after the credits... and I was right!
He got all happy about the scene, he can't thank me enough!
HIhihihihi
Definitely loved it, but I had kept up with it pretty well before it's release, so I had a lot of faith in how it would be done - especially RDJ's performance. I'm so glad it's gotten such a great reception.
28Love the movie! The awkwardness of Tony Stack character to know his capability being a super-hero was the most fun part. It got the tense of a GEEK feeling how his power was built. Characters with one-liner scripts make you laugh non stop. A great start for summer blockbuster.
29This clever, quick-witted, tightly scripted adaptation of yet another superhero movie may actually turn into one of the most respected and highest ranked movies in this genre’s increasingly impressive collection.
I am not a comic book guy for the most part and had never heard of Iron Man before the previews to this movie. I almost didn't even go see it, but the good reviews by the critics made me decide to give it a chance. I was NOT disappointed. It was fantastic.
My Social Standards now has my whole review. Check it out at our site, http://mysocialstandards.blogspot.com to see it.
30Very good popcorn movie, but Robert Downey Jr. was what gave it magic.
31I had reservations at first, but then I checked Rotten Tomatoes and it had like a 90% rating. So, go I did and I enjoyed it very much. I never followed the Iron Man or Avengers comics, but this movie was very accessible to everyone. Better movie than Spiderman, X-Men, or Batman Begins!
32I loved it. So entertaining, and I totally want to hang out with Tony Stark!
33The comic charachter T. Stark was a substance abusing genius billionaire womanizer.
34just saw it....
drug addict rehabilitation league
RD Jr., no need to elaborate
Sam L. Jackson, legendary junkie
Director/Chauffer, How you lose that weight Jon? Yeah, u and RD worked on a special protocol, hmmm?
That flick must have been the party crew, with a staff of thousands if you can wait through the credits for the less than thrilling sequel fantasy
Movie gets two stars, which is not bad. Problem, it is kid stupid but not kid friendly. The 'psycho' brown enemies have no ploy or objective. RD is a good Stark, if not cool enough being a twerp at heart.
Great for the 12-15 crowd
My thearter 10:30 show fri night had six adults and three small children who all thankfully left asleep.
My first movie in four years.
