Every other Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

There were some really great suggestions for last week's challenge, the recast of the Nickelodeon '80s hit Hey Dude. I had a feeling this recast would get a lot of folks who were kids during that era of television feeling nostalgic, and I'm so excited most of you remembered the characters! I had a great time thinking about new cast members, too, but mostly I just couldn't get the theme song out of my head all week.
I really loved the ideas of of Rainn Wilson as Mr. Ernst and Greek's Spencer Grammer as Melody that azulskies suggested. The more I think about it, the more Spencer looks like a young Christine Taylor to me, and they already have similar careers — both getting their starts on TV as the nice girl.
I thought that the somewhat nerdy Buddy Ernst would be tough to cast, but ladyelephant's suggestion of Haley Joel Osment is creative and I think it would work well. A young Freddie Muniz would be fun too, as bratty3000 pointed out. And I'm glad we all agreed last week that David Lascher was such a crush-worthy Ted McGriff, but I see kendallina's point that Ben McKenzie would give David a run for his money.
Thank you to everyone for your great suggestions! There was one cast that was right on with the innocent Melody and the rich girl Brad, not to mention a totally hilarious suggestion for Mr. Ernst that I just couldn't resist. Congrats to khowell!
To see who khowell picked, along with a new cast photo, read more.
khowell's cast:
Mr. Ernst — Stephen Colbert
Bradley "Brad" Taylor — Leighton Meester
Ted McGriff — Jared Padalecki
Melody Hanson — Jamie Lynn Spears
Benjamin "Buddy" Ernst — Seth Green
Danny Lightfoot — Wilmer Valderrama

Temperley London
Kate Moss
Anthony Peto
Colbert as Mr. Ernst = genius!
1I do think Seth Green is way too old to be Buddy, though. Isn't he supposed to be younger than all the other kids?
ZAWG that's a good list!
2great cast! love it. better watch out for those man-eating jackrabbits... and that killer cacti...
3in looking at the picture of the "real" brad above... doesn't she look like a younger sandra bullock?
4jasmint - sorry, to be fair khowell had a note about a young Seth Green, like from Can't Buy Me Love.
5Zeke the plumber!
6Oh my god Stephen as the goofy Mr. Ernst is hilarious. I also agree with Leighton as Brad. But let's be honest, nothing can top the original! I wish Nickelodeon would release Hey Dude on DVD!! I would cry with nostalgia.
7Congrats to all. Love the new cast.
8Hehe, I'm glad other people remember "Hey Dude". Everytime I see Christine Taylor in something I think of this show and other people just look at me and have no idea what I'm talking about.
9i'm with you mjane - i ALWAYS remember her from Hey Dude first...and NOONE knows what i'm saying
10ok Colbert would be amazing but thanks for the shout-out Buzz! I love Spencer Grammar!
11I'd watch it just for Jared!
12Oh man, Stephen Colbert? On the money with that one!
13Great Recast. Congrats khowell!
14I like all the casting, EXCEPT Jamie-Lynn Spears as Melody.
Hey, can we do Salute Your Shorts next!!!
15Fabulous choices khowell. Oh, that we all had your imagination...
16Khowell. Way to put that law school education to work. By the way this is brooke's sister. She told and I could not help but post.
17It's a little wild and a little strange, when you make your home out on the range. So grab your horse and come along, cause you can't hitch a ride if you can't hold on. Singing, yippee, kiiyii-aayyy...
Fergie can re-record it and add her pseudo-hip hop, pop flare to mess it up, like with the Sex and the City theme song although that one had no words to being with but still...Fergie sucks. Fergie can play Melody's haggard mom in the recast!
