Yeah, yeah, I rolled my eyes a little too when I heard Lori Loughlin had been cast as the mom in the 90210 spinoff. But today's spate of casting news has me feeling much, much better about this little project. Witness the following:
- Canadian cutie Shenae Grimes will play the lead teen, Annie Mills, an emo drama nerd trying to make it big with the cool crowd. OK, so that might not mean anything to you . . . unless you're a big fan of Degrassi: The Next Generation. Her character, Darcy, was stalked online, drugged at a party, and involved with breaking another cheerleader's leg on purpose, so she should be well prepared for the craziness of Beverly Hills. (Also, this was the role the producers were reportedly hoping Hilary Duff would take — so, whether this is good or bad news might depend on your feelings about Hilary Duff.)
- Jessica Walter, aka Lucille Bluth, will play family matriarch Tabitha Mills, the alcoholic ex-actress who was linked to Warren Beatty in her heyday. She's the impetus for bringing her son, Harry, and his wife (Celia, Loughlin's character) back to 90210. See, I told you it was a good week for Arrested Development alumni.
- There aren't a lot of details about this last piece of news yet, but Ryan Eggold — whom I fell a little bit in love with as Farber Kaufman on Dirt this season — has apparently also been cast. TV Guide describes his role just as "the teacher," Ryan. But just knowing I have another place to catch Eggold is good enough for me.
Does any of this warm your heart toward the spinoff? Or are you still a skeptic?

What's wrong with Lori Loughlin?
1Well the fact that the lead character is a "emo drama nerd" doesnt really entice me to watch.
2And i cant bring myself to watch degrassi.... so if this show is gonna be anthing like it, im probably not going to be a fan.... sorry!
i wondered the same thing, shannonsocrazy... buzz, what's your beef with LL?
3Degrassi is great! but...does this mean that a series finale will be coming soon? i always hated the Darcy character, so that isn't making me want to watch 90210 with that girl in it.
really - i'm sure i'll catch a few episodes.
4Hey, I've got no problem with LL other than that I still picture her on Full House! There were some less-than-thrilled comments on the news yesterday, and she alone wouldn't sell me on watching the show . . . but now, I can picture her as Shanae Grimes' mom and Jessica Walter's daughter-in-law!
5oh, i'm happy the arrested development crew are doing some great things these days! i think every single one of them is brilliant!
6I love Jessica Walter, but I'm not so sure if this is a great week for Arrested Development fans. I've been hoping for a film, and I hope these other cast projects allow for time to make a movie.
7ok, thx buzz, i feel better
loved her on full house too! but i think she'll be great
in tihs. guess i didn't read all the comments yesterday...
8the older actors are better looking than the young ones
9it took me a few minutes to peg the degrassi chick but hmm...i don't know if i'm going to be able to watch this spin-off - it's just too much for me!
10I love Shanae Grimes, she will be great in this.
11erin i love her too, but i hope this doesnt mean she's gonna quit degrassi.
12I've never been a super big fan of Darcy on Degrassi (not because of the actress, though, her character just annoyed me). But I'm super excited to see Shanae on the 90210 spin-off. I always get excited when people I see of small, cable network shows make it to bigger shows/ careers (like Shaia LeBeouf from Even Stevens). I can thank my little sister for know about both shows.
13I love Shanae. Darcy is one of my favorite characters on Degrassi. I can't really see her as emo though...she is more the popular cheerleader type.
14Oh my gosh... if any Bluth family member is involved, I'll be there!
15PS does anyone know what network this show is supposed to be on? Network, cable?
16Ryan Eggold?! Does that mean there is no more DIRT?!
17sunnyheart — it's being developed for the CW
18radarkitty — it's possible he could do both, since cable and broadcast series tend to have pretty different filming schedules. Fingers crossed!
I rather see Jessica Walter in an AD movie.
19Ooh an Arrested Development movie would be great! And thanks Buzz.
20Jessica Walter is too good for this!
21Shenae Grimes gets on my nerves. I actually am glad she is doing this so she won't be on Degrassi.
omg i love Shanae Grimes!
