Welcome back, Seattle Grace! I'm sure the simple fact that this was a new episode of Grey's Anatomy after all that time in the great, barren strike wilderness influenced my opinion of this episode, but it was nice good to see everyone back — with their new haircuts, new relationships, and new facial hair statuses.
That said, I think the episode suffered a lot just by being the first one back. Not only did the writers have to fill in the gaps of what happened over the past six weeks, but they also had to move us — quickly! — into the stories for the rest of the season. There was a lot of setup, and a lot of reminders of things that happened before, but not a whole lot of resolution. For my thoughts, just read more.
Let's start with Meredith, because for once, it seems like she's trying. Rather than whining endlessly about her problems, she's started to see a therapist — though doesn’t it just figure that she can talk everyone’s ear off except in therapy? At least it’s a step. And while I think her curiosity about the guy who touched the bear cub was self-interested at first (she wanted the points for solving a medical mystery, and she wanted to know if there was something keeping the guy from being able to love properly), it led to some actual medicine, with Meredith finding a way to save lives.

Of course, that puts her directly in the path of Derek, who's wrapped up in his thing with Rose. The thing is, the Rose story just reeks of filler at this point. We haven't spent enough time with her to care about her; their relationship, after six weeks, still seems like mostly flirting in the hallways. I do wonder, though, if that story would have looked different had the strike not interfered.
The rest of the characters also seemed off in filler-ville, a bit, as their plots seemed constructed to remind us of stuff from earlier this season. Alex: He's a fighter, an underdog — and we still don't why he's so damaged. George complains a lot. Cristina wants to be Hahn, and Hahn thinks Cristina is a bug to be swatted. Izzie can't trust her instincts anymore, to the tune of more than $100,000 in unnecessary medical tests. Got it. Now, let's move on.
Some other thoughts:
- Would two interns really only be able to afford a place as squalid as George and Lexie's apartment? I did like seeing Lexie's nesting instinct, though I don't think I'd eat fruit from a bedpan.
- Despite the weakness of Izzie's overall plotline, she did get some of the best lines of the night: "I don't need guys, I don't need sex, 'cause this competition is my orgasm." I wonder if her possible lupus diagnosis was a House shout-out?
- Speaking of Izzie — remember back when we saw her being a competent doctor working with Hahn and arranging the surgical rooms to be comfortable for her patients? Why can't everyone, including Izzie, just see that she's good at that kind of stuff?
- I wonder if the whole contest will have any ramifications down the line, now that Meredith has the sparkle pager.
- I’m a little surprised the Chief let Bailey keep Baby Tuck with her. She can’t watch over him like that forever, right?
- Still loving the renewed McSteamy/McDreamy bromance.
What worked for you about this return to Seattle Grace — and what did you think was missing? And is anyone as excited as I am to see Addison return and utterly kick ass?

OMG!! GREYS ANATOMY WAS GREAT!! MINUS THE PART OF MC.DREAMY WITH THAT HOOCHIE OF A ROSE! THAT NOW CLAIMS SHE IS IN LOVE WITH HIM....ARGH WHATEVER. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE EX TO COME BACK NEXT WEEK
1It was nice to be back at Seattle Grace and to get caught up six weeks later. While it wasn't the greatest of all episodes, it did accomplish what it had to in terms of catching us up and looking ahead. I'm as excited as you about Addison's return. I really dislike her on Private Practice, but on Grey's, she's great. I'm loving the Hahn/Callie/Christina dynamic best of all. And, for once, I really did like Meredith. George seems to have found his personality and Chief was back on his game. Still not loving Rose and Derek but Derek and Mark are something else! Looking forward to seeing how things unfold in the next few weeks. Great recap, Buzz!
2I wish Addison was coming back for good...the show definitely was better w/her in it. That's too bad.
I do not like Derek & Rose at all...I don't see any chemistry between them, feels very forced.
3Sometimes I read the rundown to catch up and see if anything good is actually happening on this show. And surprise surprise, it isn't. The departures of Kate Walsh and Isaiah Washington ruined the show. How many times can people see the constant back and forth with Meredith and Derek before they stop watching in disgust, as I have?
4I actually squealed at the end of the teaser for next week's episode. I can't wait!!!
One question, though: WHY is Shonda Rimes making it so hard for me to like Izzie?? She used to be my favorite!
5The best part was how they explained Izzy's shorter hair-do as something she did herself to make her speedier in the competition... It couldn't have just been a haircut, she had to have done it her self while living in the hospital! There is no way that George and Lexie cannot afford an apartment (crapartment...) that doesn't have bugs in it!
Also, I think Bailey said she was dropping Tuck off at day care when she was on her way in with him. Lots of hospitals have on-site care... I don't think he just hung around with her all day.
6I'm so glad to see Meredith "evolving"! It's the best thing the show could have done for itself. After awhile, the whole dark, gloomy thing was getting old. And I loved the Lexie/George storyline, it was hilarious (although I'm also not sure that is the ONLY place they could have afforded). Did I miss something with Lexie's (and Meredith's) dad? Why isn't she living with him anymore?
7And lots of shows have done the whole back/forth thing with romantic storylines. It keeps it interesting. When two people you never think would get together and make it work, do, it seems a little final. I appreciate that the Grey's writers were trying to keep it interesting and not so monotonous. So excited to see what else is coming.
I almost puked when Rose declared her "love" for Derek. She sounded like a gushing teenager.
I think Dr. Hahn has the hots for Callie.
Alex looked hot last night, was it the beard? I dunno, but he looked the best I've ever seen him.
Having worked in a hospital, there's no way I would want to come home and feel like I am at work (with bedpans, urinals, etc. all over my apartment), but the sentiment was cute.
8ah, Jopperma, that makes sense about the daycare. I missed that line, but we did see Bailey lots of times during the day without him, so she must have just had him in the morning and then again at night.
Ekaterina — I think Lexie moved out mostly because she was tired of taking care of her alcoholic dad.
9Does anybody foresee Lexie and George hooking up? I bet they do, but I wish they wouldn't. First, it would be nice to see George NOT sleep with every woman at Seattle Grace! Second, it would be nice to see a close male-female relationship that doesn't turn into romance.
10hoyagrrls, I bet they will hook up! You can see that coming.
11I didn't care if it wasn't the best Grey's episode ever...I was just happy to see it back on. I didn't get to watch it last night but I did earlier online. It made me laugh, it made me wanna cry, it just made me feel good. I so love that it's back on and I can't wait for next week! And I do believe that Izzie consistently gets some of the best lines in the show.
12Oh, and Callie looks just about the best I've ever seen her on the show! Breaking up with George has done a lot for her.
@bluesuze ~ I think Grey's would own me heart and soul again if they developed a Hahn-Torres romantic relationship! It would be so different from everything else on tv.
13OMG mcdream is soo hot! the way he looked at meredith at the end of the episode when she was telling him about her research study idea...AHH! he's so hot..the best is when he looks at her with those intense eyes. They're getting back together...i know it!
14Happy to have Grey's Anatomy back!!! And how beautiful did Clea Duvall look as the "rebound" wife. I was happy to see her on something!!!
15Yeah, hoya, that would certainly spice things up at good 'ole Seattle Grace!
16I loved when Lexie was stealing stuff from the hospital--esp. the painting! haha
And I agree with everyone--they would def. be able to afford a nicer apartment. I have a friend who is just starting her internship/residency and she bought a condo! So, even in Seattle they could afford a nicer apartment!
17i thought this episode was good, but i felt it was a little heavy-handed with the tumor relationship and the 'rebound' girl vs. the mer/der/rose situation. i know the writers do that kind of stuff often (maybe even every episode) but it just felt especially forced.
re: alex and the 'underdog'. we've been given lots of clues as to why alex is so damaged. his dad was a drug addict/alcoholic musician, he made a comment to lexi about having to grow up when he was a child and take care of his family (in the episode where she was upset about having to take care of her dad at 24) and i believe he payed his own way through college with athletic scholarship (wrestling). he's had a pretty tough life.
18annnd i loved when george asked why she didn't steal a tv and she said they were bolted down--overall they were funny together
19I SCREAMED at the TV when George walked in with Lexie...HE BETTER NOT KISS HER!
I think that would just be horrible!
20yep i believe tuck went to daycare.
loved the mcdreamy/mcsteamy elevator scene- too funny.
hate derek and rose but honestly i'm not even too involved in my hating them cause we all know it won't last.
totally saw the way derek looked at meredith when she was thinking of her way to save people. he's going to want her back soon.
izzie does annoy me but she did have some funny lines last night.
and my friend pointed out that when lexie was rambling she sounded a lot like meredith- and that was a good thing since they are sisters and all- its nice to see a similarity somewhere.
o and i could totally do with out the flap of scalp on that woman's head- made me slightly ill lol
21o yea happs i liked the tv comment too!
22I too was happy to see them back! and I totally agree about george and Lexie's apartment, it was WAY too over the top as far as crappy student housing goes. It looked like something out of a cheesy teen tv show, like saved by the bell, instead of a realistic setting like we see everywhere else.
23jenintx — I think there's a bunch more Alex stuff coming up this season, too. They keep hinting at it over at the writers' blog, and I'm so curious to see what it is.
24I was just glad to have Grey's (and Betty) back last night, though the episode itself was a bit dull. I think next week's ep. will be a lot more exciting!
25my oh so little thoughts:
McSteamy without the facial hair? ewwww! bring it back?
and funny how by the end of the episode both Bailey and Lexie sounded like they were full of colds.
other than that just another great Grey's episode, glad to see it back!
26mcsteamy put the steamy back in his name last night... i think it's the longer hair and possibly the lighter scruff. looking forward to seeing more of him. but, i would like to see him have more going on than just the typical hook-up talk though.
last night's epi left me kind of unfulfilled. maybe it's b/c the characters need to date people other than themselves! or b/c everyone has gotten kinda whiny - except meredith who is finally evolving. i think not having addison and burke around left a void that boring lexie grey cannot possibly fill. she's terrible. but, i will continue watching! the stuff with alex sounds interesting, and of course gotta see what happens with derek & meredith.
27i didn't like that Meredith won the contest. i feel like Christina never gets a break - i think she's a way better doctor than meredith. i liked how there wasn't an awkward moment with george/izzy like all of the first part of the season.
i think seattle is an expensive city, so maybe two interns could only afford a place like that - especially if they want it close to the hospital! i really liked how lexie stole a "scrub room" sign!
i thought it was sweet how she just really wants a friend. i think
george and she will be very good friends. i always though george was less mature than the other interns from his first year.
umm...why didn't they show any other interns?! i thought the main bunch had 5 interns each? where were they? and did bailey say she supervised 50 residents??? there are 50 surgical residents? whoa!
28First off I just have to say I love that Mer is seeing a therapist. She needs to talk about her abandonment issues and all the other stuff that has gone wrong in her life. I was beyond disappointed with Izzie in this episode. I have always seen Izzie as the doctor who cares more about her patients than other surgeons. I find it difficult to believe that Izzie would put a patient through all those tests and waste so much money just to get points. I hate Rose and I can't wait until she leaves. I love Lexie and I think we need more scenes between Lex and Mer. Most importantly Addison is coming back next week and I can't wait.
29Rose loves Derek after six weeks? Please. Someone already said it but she sounded like a gushing teen. "Have you looked into those eyes?" Ick.
I love the Derek/Mark banter. Love it. Love it.
30Am I the only one that completely hated the whole episode?
I give it one more, than I bail.
31I just can't be critical of this show! As far fetched as it is sometimes, I still love it.
The scene "Intestines in the hands!" was GREAT! And came on JUST as my husband was digging into a juicy steak. hehehe
George & Lexie. They will probably hook up, but ya know, George should just be friends with girls for a while. He's got a lot on his plate emotionally and could really use a good monogamous friend.
Derek & Rose. I don't like them together! Not that I necessarily do or don't want him back with Mer, I just DON'T want him with Rose.
Izzie, I hope she gets her crap together and pulls her head outta her ass.
Christina, I felt so bad for her when Callie and Dr Hahn (I will NOT call her Erica! She's such a bit**) snubbed her. IT'S HER FREAKIN' APARTMENT! I don't know, I just thought that was extremely rude and very high school.
32I was so happy Grey's was finally back on last night. I loved the episode. I could go on for a bit but all that i have to say is I HATE ROSE!!!!!!!
33I couldn't believe forgot everything that has happened with Grey's pre-strike so it was really jarring jumping right back in. I felt like the show didn't come back with a bang like I thought it would, I thinkt he writers just wanted to quickly write a competent episode to get Grey's back on the air soon. I don't know, not that Grey's isn't ever depressing, but that bear storyline was horrible. A guy with a brain tumor causes his brother to die and marries that poor girl spontaneously because of his condition. I felt so bad for everyone involved, even though its just a TV show. I think I've just been over Grey's since they caused Denny to die, I could care less about Derek/Meredith/Rose because we know how its going to end. But I was intrigued about the lesbian vibes concerning Cristina/Hahn/Callie. I think that everyone thinks Callie likes Hahn, but maybe Cristina likes Callie?
34Wow there really needs to be an editing button for comments. I meant to say I couldn't believe THAT I forgot everything...
35Meredith irritated me less than usual in this episode, which was nice.
And George and Lexie are SO going to be hooking up soon...
36More things to add...
How can George and Lexie not afford a decent apartment? If medical interns can do it in the Bay Area, then they could certainly do it in Seattle.
I really hope George doesn't hook up with Lexie, or anyone for that matter. He needs to be alone for awhile and it seems a little weird that George is the one who has slept with almost every woman in Seattle Grace.
Izzie used to be my favorite but she needs an interesting storyline. She grates on my nerves sometimes, but she does have some great lines.
Interested about next week with Alex and Ava/Rebecca. Alex may be her baby daddy?
37What have they turned Izzie and George into, I hate them. I want them to make us like Rose and Derek. Because right now they are boring.
38im SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited for addisons return!! shes totally my fav on this show... and i just LOVE this show.. omg im just soo happy its back on!! *too much emotion lol*
39oh and also, im a pharmacy intern and we make NOTHING yet i have a nice apt. not like super awesome but very decent, in a good neighborhood etc lol.
oh and rebeccas preggers?? gosh!
40I love it! I definitely miss Grey's! I thought that Meredith doubted the guy's love for the rebound gf (turned wife after 10 days) because she secretly wanted to doubt that Derek will end up with Rose. She wanted to prove to herself that a guy marrying the rebound girl does not mean love. She was always to prove it of course.
41Woot bromance! That might just be my very storyline. And I really thought the Lexi/George roommate living situation was so cute!
42Also, I'm pretty sure we got the tip off a couple seasons ago that Alex had an abusive alcoholic father. Anyone else remember that?
43I was never into the Alex + Rebecca/Jane Doe storyline.
I want to see more Cristina. And more Callie. More of the spirited women and less of the whiney self-pitying girls (Izzy, Lexie, Merideth).
@ californiagirlx7 ~ I like the idea that maybe Cristina is into Callie! That would be a fantastic spin. I don't think I even care about how realistic the whole thing may or may not be; I just want something new in tv.
44i have to confess girls.. i kinda wish mer would do the nasty nasty with mcsteamy hehehehhh
45tiabia - i thought that was clea duvall, she just looked different, prettier, i guess. ha.
& I heard on Entertainment Tonight that the actress who's playing Rose is leaving,
making way for the Derek/Meredith storyline...again.
I love it, but it's gotten a bit stale.
I'm just excited like the rest of you that it's back on!
46Next week is going to be great!!
I loved...most of it. Although Meredith therapist thing reminded me of ally mcbeal.
47i liked the show- did I miss something though? What happened with the tumor guy? Did he die? Did he live?
48Lauren - I think they said that the tumor was inoperable. He didn't die at the end of the episode, but it was sort of implied that he would eventually.
49I think I will give Grey's another chance. One last one to be exact. I have been finding the episodes to be quite high schoolish. Cliques and silliness. Ten percent of the show is medical drama the rest is;
Are you my best friend?
Can I hang out with you?
I dont like her because now I cant hang out with you bro.
You get a sparkle beeper. yay!
Aw so sorry I made you spend 120,oo dollars on test you didn't need *pout*
It's a tumor!!!! Yes!!!!
I found the last one offensive and quite distasteful
