There comes a point in every American Idol season when it begins to occur to me that America and I must not be watching the same show. And in this season, that point came Wednesday night. Anyone else feel like they were in bizarro world? To see who's safe for Neil Diamond week and who headed home, just read more.
There were weeks — like, say, last week — when I would have said it was no surprise had Carly gone home. But this week? After one of her best performances of the season, when she finally seemed to be relaxed and rocking and having fun? Carly obviously had a tough time connecting with voters; she was ending up in the bottom three when there were far, far worse singers still in the competition. But her personality was finally starting to show through, and she was looking cute and acting delightful. So why now, America?
In fact, everything that happened after the Davids were proclaimed safe made no sense to me. Syesha (whom I liked for the first time on Tuesday) and Brooke (of the False Start Heard 'Round the World) paired together — and Brooke's the one who was safe? And Carly's adorably up-tempo "Superstar" got trumped by Jason's warbling "Memory"? All of my predicted bottom three were safe, and the two performances I liked best landed in the bottom. Did this make anyone else feel a little out of sorts?
Carly seemed like such a wreck any time she'd ended up in the bottom earlier this season, but she handled her departure with class on Wednesday — and she should be proud of herself. At least she went out with a strong performance, and I honestly hope her second real crack at a music career works out better than the first.
Some other thoughts:
- Does anyone else think Syesha has been trained to know exactly where the camera is at all times?
- This week brought in 38 million votes, which I think is the highest total we've heard this season.
- Some of the harmonies on the "All I Ask of You" group sing were awesomely bad. There were some notes that I don't know if any of the six of them could hit individually — and they were being asked to hit them together. Disaster!
- Ryan called Brooke's false start the first time anyone had ever stopped and started in all of Idol history. Except that's a lie, cause Brooke did it a couple of weeks ago.
- While the show was really mostly filler (why on earth are they still an hour long?), I actually enjoyed the chat with Andrew Lloyd Webber, especially when he called Jason's decision to sing "Memory" the "most curious song choice" of his career.
- Why does Young David always get the most boring role in the Ford Pimpomercials?
- Hey, that was President Bush's second appearance on TV this week! But it didn't do much to boost ratings for Deal or No Deal.
- If that was your first time hearing or seeing Leona Lewis, did you think she lived up to the hype?
- I totally crack up every time I see a scene from season one that has Dunkleman in it.
- I think I prefer the sing-out ending to the awkward standing around that happened last night. Why diminish the last moment in the spotlight?
So, are any of the rest of you baffled by America at large? Can anyone take out the two Davids? And who's going to sing "Sweet Caroline" next week?

I was shocked Carly went home, she was great this week.
I really thought it would be Jason and Brooke in the bottom two with Brooke going home. This was the first week that i like Syesha, she did awesome this week so i couldn't believe her and Carly were the bottom two. I was completely disgusted after i watched the show.
It's about time that they make the show a half hour. There is no need for an hour long show. It is ridiculous, a lot of the time i will just tune in for the last ten minutes.
1I felt like it was a bizarro world after Michael Johns left!
2This show is deffo rigged. Brooke and Jason should have been bottom two last night.
3Why does the first comment always end up so out of place and on top on the ads?
I am in complete agreement with Buzz. Carly should NOT have gone home this week. But I didn't vote so I guess I shouldn't complain...
4I actually thought about who would sing "Sweet Caroline".. i think its too giddy for David Cook.. too fast for David A... too much range for Brooke.. and just not Syesha's style. I think Jason could turn it into his style.. strumming with the guitar. I think it could go well.
"All I Ask of You" was good until the girls came in. -> All male top 3.
Brook should've gone home, but unfortunately, I think people felt sorry for her and voted. Jason was not good, I know, but he has been good. And he doesnt really have a voice for Broadway, hah. Brooke is just falling apart.
The show isn't rigged, its basically a popularity contest now, as Simon said. Carly WAS just getting a personality (too late) and Syesha still hasn't really got one so she's been in the bottom a lot.
I think it's going to be a landslide win for David Cook overall.
5Ridiculous. Seriously thats the thing i HATE about this show. Half the time, great singing has NOTHING to do with it.
6When Ryan said it was the first time they'd had a start and stop maybe he meant a start and stop because someone forgot lyrics. Last time Brooke did it, it was because of pitch or something.
I really wish Brook would've gone home. Her and Jason both Knew they sould've been in the bottom 2. It's just ridiculous.
The "group sing" is one of the reasons God gave us TiVo.
7Well, my husband is officially boycotting the show because it is not a singing competition anymore...haha, it hasn't been that for awhile now.
I feel Brooke and Jason should have been bottom two with Brooke going home, I can't take anymore of her looks, and her humbleness, it almost comes off as fake to me. I am sure it isn't, but it still annoys me.
And, yes, why did they keep talking about the false start like it was a first when she had done that, it apparently stuck in several of our minds, so why not the judges or Ryan? Because she got further into the song this time?
I have never disliked Carly, but she never did much for me, until this week, I thought she killed it! If she had been doing that all along then maybe she would still be here.
I saw Vote for the Worst is pushing Brooke, that is just irritating also, it just kills it for people that enjoy the show.
I am a David Cook fan all the way! I have loved him from the beginning, and this week he showed he isn't just a Rocker he can sing.
8American Idol never fails to surprise. How bizarre.
9buzz, i hope they ALL sing sweet caroline...they've never made the top five sing the same song before =)
i was SO mad carly went home, syesha has needed to be gone for weeks!
my favorite comment of the night....whichever judge said this week's voting was a "popularity contest". as opposed to EVERY OTHER WEEK!!! there are not vocal coaches judging...it's america. land of 12 year old girls armed with unlimited texting...it's ALWAYS gonna be a popularity contest.
10I'm surprised Carly went home, but I knew it was coming sooner or later.
Am I the only one that thinks David A. will give David Cook a run for his money? I definitely do not think that it is a given that David Cook is going to win this. Look at the demographics. If it comes down to the two of them, all of the teenyboppers will vote for Archuleta.
11Totally shocked here, too. Brooke and Jason should have been the bottom two. I realize no one is safe at this point (which is why I actually voted this week).
12I am excited about Neil Diamond week and also was thinking about "Sweet Caroline" - I would love to see David C. do something with it, but I bet Jason or Brooke are going to sing it. I think David C. could do an awesome rock version of "Cracklin' Rose".
Mkay, so here's what needs to happen. This needs to be the first year where NO ONE actually wins AI. Instead, they all need to be dispersed among the entertainment industry as follows:
Seyesha: Move to New York and try Broadway. Either that or disappear from the face of the earth. Either would be fine for me.
Archuletta: Move to Orlando and join the Disney World entertainment staff.
Castro: Move to any college town and sing in any bar.
Cook: I don't care. He reminds me of David Hasselhoff. Blech.
Brooke: Oh, Brooke. Move to any city that has a kickin' music and arts program and teach music to underpriviledged children.
13i can't believe carly was voted off. something is terribly wrong because memories was AWFUL!! I cant even believe he said "i didnt even know a cat sang it" seriously!? he should have just been voted off for that dumb comment.
come on america!!
14Ask is definitely right, "land of 12 year old girls armed with unlimited texting..." that's what happens when you allow votes to come over via text message hahah
this show has always been a popularity contest since season 1, if it wasn't Taylor Hicks would've never won.
15Totally baffled. Come on!
16Ok well. I for one am SO happy Brooke didn't go home, and I think the bottom two made perfect sense.
For weeks we've been saying, when is Syesha going home? So even though she had a great week, should that one good week make up for all the past weeks when we've been sighing and rolling our eyes and waiting for her to leave?
I wish Carly hadn't gone, because I really like her. But obviously alot of other people don't. She keeps ending up in the bottom three, and so just 'cause she had a great week to doesn't necessairily mean she should stay. (Don't get me wrong I love Carly)
Castro has a big fan base because he is a boy and girls are taught to like boys more then their fellow girl. So of course the boys are having a much easier time.
My fourteen year old sister in law is personally responsible for squealing every time she see's widdle Archuwedda and so I have officially disowned her.
17This is only my second season of truly sitting down to watch American Idol and I'm absolutely disgusted by how much of a popularity contest it has become. Two of my three favorite performances ended up in the bottom two. Carly was the only girl left with range and a strong voice. Brooke and Jason were insufferable on Tuesday and don't deserve to be in the top five. I'd stop watching out of disgust, but I'm too in love with David Cook to miss his performances. I can say that I'm no longer looking forward to Idol during the week and just going through the motions at this point.
18I was honestly shocked when Brooke wasnt in the bottom two- and I love her!
I think she knows she needs to pull it together and make some magic or she is gone soon.
The fact that good people go home is not really bad, it just makes it more believable that its based on votes and not what people want. I don't vote so I cant be frustrated with the results.
19I've watched it every season and I agree, it is a personality contest (even though I loved Taylor Hicks - he's the only one who didn't suck up to Simon to win). I don't think Jason even knows he is on the show!! I love David Cook but didn't enjoy this performance. As far as the other David - all I can hope is uses the same manager as Miley Cryus because that's all I see him selling to.
20I am incredibly dismayed by last night's results show. I actually threw a child-like tantrum on the floor and threw my slippers across the room because I loved Carly. I loved her. Brooke has fallen far from my good graces and I was telling my husband all night that his beloved Mormon Carole King is going to be packing her bags. And then! WTF, America? Are you just not ready for a tattooed Idol? Or an Idol that's not an American citizen? What is it about the girl with the best voice in the whole competition that you can't seem to like?
Now I'm forced to throw all my support behind David Cook, in the hopes that he can bring down the Sleepy Puppy we know as David Archuleta.
21People are thinking of the contestants in terms of all their performances, not just the last one. I, for example, have had them all ranked in my mind for weeks now. Syesha and Carly have both done multiple bad performances before, and people are not going to forget those just because they were great last night. I think Syesha will go next, then Brooke, and it's going to be an all-male top three.
22When everyone talks about a popularity contest, I think that is part of the show. You have to have personality (be popular with viewers) to hit it off with the public as well as being able to sing. Syesha can sing but she is boring and I think that is why she has ended up in the bottom three so many times. She hasn't built a fan base cuz she doesn't stand out. This week was the first week she actually showed what she can do but still was in the bottom. But maybe now she will build a following..if it's not too late.
I think those that get upset that it is a popularity contest are missing the boat. As an musical artist, if you aren't talented and popular, no one is going to go to buy your CDs, go to your concerts or give a crap!
23ok people.. american idol, while yes it is a singing competition, its called AMERICAN IDOL. aka whoever america wants to see. it is unfortunate that people with great singing talent don't have star personalities, but the people who are always get in the top half of the votes have personality AND singing ability. you can't say that these people suck at singing either, they were picked by legitimate judges (more legitimate than the americans who vote, at least). since they can all sing, it is a popularity contest. with the exception of brooke, because i think she's done all she can do, everyone left is good. so if your favorite gets voted off, its because they aren't very likeable. sorry!
and enough with the "jason is a stupid pothead" thing. he's just goofy and has admitted to not knowing how to do interviews. and just cuz he has dreads doesn't mean he's a pothead. don't be so ignorant and lay off! sheesh. not trying to be mean, it just bothers me cuz he's my favorite - because of his style and genuine personality.
24
RCL, I'm dying laughing at your comment!
25I actually can't stand Carly's voice. Whenever she hits that one note that makes her close her eyes and open her mouth wide - it's just not very pleasant on the ear to me. None of the females this year have had a powerhouse voice like some past seasons. That's why I don't care if any of them go. Syesha actually ought to be trying for Broadway, that's where she belongs. And I mean that in a good way. She said before that she has acting experience (not sure if it was just commercials or not) but she clearly felt at home in that song and that type of performance. She'll have a career after this.
26Honestly, I thought either Carly or Sayesha would go home and then which ever one didn't will go next week. Constantly in the bottom vs. people that have never been there just doesn't bode well for them. But I was a little surprised that Brooke was safe...that was awful!
I really hope that David Cook sings "Sweet Caroline".
27No one is gonna beat David Cook. And I'm not just saying that because he's my favorite to win and because I am in love with the guy. He's good EVERY week. He's the only one left who has range. Everyone else is one note.
28Honestly American Idol is a popularity contest and that's why Carly got voted off. Syesha and Carly don't have large fanbases like the other ones, it seems. I would also like to add that I think that it has a lot to do with their body of work over the course of the show because Syesha and Carly haven't been as consistently good as the others. If someone has one bad performance, I don't think that means they should automatically go home. It was disappointing that Carly had to leave on one of her good weeks but it was too little too late in my opinion.
Did anyone else think Syesha was being a little rude after she got in the bottom two? I understand its frustrating but she kept rolling her eyes.
29Oh yeah, I forgot to add...seriously, Neil Diamond week? The only song I like of his is "Sweet Caroline."
30Okay, I give up. Who voted for Brooke White? Nobody I know, so what's up with that? Carly is an excellent singer and very talented. Brooke on the other hand forget the lyrics!!! Uggghh! I don't get it.

I thought he meant it was the first time someone had ever stopped the entire band and asked them to start again. Last time it was just her playing guitar, no?
Of course it's a popularity contest. If it was a straight singing contest, the judges could pick out the best singers on their own. There would be no need to involve the public.
And, I'm ok with that. For example, even though I recognize David Cook has some musical talent, I just want him to goooooo. I can't stand him!!!
32i was disappointed to see carly go last night, especially since i thought her performance this week was one of her best. honestly brooke bothers me so much. she is totally holier than thou but then tries to get by with the sweet and innocent look. she's a diva underneath!! i'm over jason, he's just not a mainstream singer--sorry kids. go take another hit on your bong, jason and get off my tv! haha.
33Man, the Jason = Pothead comments are so played. Enough already. He's a nice, laid back, well mannered, goofy kid. And he was sick and on enough meds to knock out a pony. He and Brooke should have been bottom two with Brooke going home, but that didn't happen, so I guess it's time to get over it and move on. I like Jason, I hope he outlasts Archuleta (even though THAT will never happen), then I hope he puts out a kickass album on an indie label that I will scoop up in a heartbeat. Hell, I might ask my husband to try to get him as an opening act on the tiny venue tours his band does.
34thank you, padraigin! im glad someone else agrees. he better put out an album asap, cuz i will also get it as soon as its released.
also, people who think david cook is the only one with range? crazy. check out http://www.idolranges.com/ and click contestants. syesha has the same range as david cook (14). and jason, carly and david a. have ranges of 12 1/2. hardly one note ranges.
35i personally meant david cook had ranged in the aspect of him being able to adapt to all themes. syesha didnt get praise from many people until alw week because she was in her element, archuleta has yet to do ANYTHING that isn't a ballad and predictable [as in boring]
36Jason Castro is seriously THE weirdest Idol contestant. I can't even listen to him talk anymore...or David Archuleta...or Brooke.
Please tell me someone else has YouTube'd David A.'s Star Search performance of "Fallin'". Who lets their little boy sings Fallin' and go all Diva on Star Search? His dad creeeeps me out, big time.
37As you can tell, I'm bitter with this week's results
38I'm quite baffled as to why Jason is still there at all - sure, he's on pitch most of the time, but that whole "huh? (shrug)" early Keanu-Reeves thing (okay, we get it, you're not naturally good at interviews - WORK on it), coupled with the fact that every one of his performances comes from the exact same angle (and yes, I think each singer should have their own style, but that doesn't mean monotony), just makes him dull to me.
David A. - same deal. He can sing, but it's the same performance, different song, every time - Coupled with that irritating "aw, shucks" thing that I think is pretty much played out - FOCUS, Archie, FOCUS, when Seacrest asks you a simple question! Your lost-puppy persona is getting old! (Plus - given the style of songs that he likes - what are they going to do with him? Have him tour Disney parks?)
David Cook I think is definitely the best, vocally and stylistically, of the guys - his alt-rock thing is cool and different for Idol, he's a confident performer, and I like that he's showing more of his "real" side. As long as he doesn't fall into the repetitive trap, I think he's the front runner.
Brooke's indie folksinger thing is cool, too - and I appreciate the fact that she actually seems to be a nice person - but if she's going to be in the Top 3, she needs to believe in herself a little more and work hard on pushing that nervousness away, 'cause it's definitely showing.
Syesha's personality, on the other hand, seems super-fake and self-absorbved to me, most of her songs to date have been tepid, and one good performance does not an Idol make.
And just for the record, I'm still ticked off that Carly and especially Michael Johns are both gone - two of the best voices in this whole darned thing. Silly, silly America - would you really rather purchase a puppy-faced kid on a cheap cotton t-shirt than a good CD?
Okay, that's my two (alright, maybe 10
) cents.
39Whoa, I didn't realise that was so long until I hit "Post." Sorry, everyone.
40I still can't believe Carly was voted off! I was so angry and still am, since Brooke should have been going home.
IMHO,it is nothing more than a popularity contest and not a contest based on talent.
And, I think I must be the only one that doesn't like David A.
41I don't care who goes home, as long as it isn't Jason. I don't care at all for any of the others. I can't stand to watch David Cook. What a douche. He seems to have the largest fan base, though. He's a dime a dozen for sure. What, You're already over Chris Daughtry? The show has gotten to be a pretty ridiculous anyway...
