If your music collection is stuffed with indie rock staples, you don't have to put them aside while planning your wedding playlist. Mainstream dance tunes just aren't every couple's style, and there are plenty of indie songs with a good beat that will get the crowd grooving.

Don't be afraid to wander off the proverbial beaten path when compiling your reception playlist. If this is the kind of music you and your fiance enjoy most, it will have more meaning. Just because Sinatra didn't croon it (or Timbaland didn't produce it) doesn't mean it's not wedding-appropriate or fun.
I put together a playlist of good reception songs from smaller artists — including some tunes that are pretty and others that are straight-up fun to dance to. Whether you're looking to go all indie or just want to sprinkle in something a little different between your oldies and your retro tunes, these songs are a good start. Are there any indie bands or songs you'd love to hear at a wedding? To check out my playlist, read more.

Awesome choices, Buzz! I know a few different couples whose first dance was to Modest Mouse's "Sleepwalkin'", so I think of that as the ultimate indie wedding song!
1Nice list, Buzz.

Float On
is a must have at our wedding. We're also making sure to play First Day of
My Life by Bright Eyes and our first dance as a couple will be Together by the Raconteurs. We want to make sure that our grandparents and parents get up and boogie too, so we're doing an
incorporation of everything...but our personal taste will definitely shine through!
3Great picks, because they are indie tunes that will get even the most un-indie people dancing. I'm sorry, but no one who likes to dance will be able to resist "daft punk" and "paper planes."
4I just don't think Paper Planes is appropriate. Everything else works though.
5I'd throw in some Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
6Lil Maw, First Day of My Life is the perfect first dance song! I love that song.
7These were a few of the songs from my wedding (note, mainly bilingual and spanish speakers attending)

I wish I didn't have issues with what music I would play if I were to ever get married. I rather just have it all be Indie and different music from the 60s and 70s that I like.
9Paper Planes is a random choice, as much as I love that song.
10I would recommend some Cut Copy, Chromeo, and Hot Chip myself

YumJimmy and I are going crazy trying to figure out the song to dance to. Apparently all of our favorite songs are downers (this is what happens when your fave bands are the dears and joy division).
We're going to go the ipod dj route and have decided to only play songs we like and would actually listen to. We are definitely going to put a bunch of timeless classics like sinatra and ella fitzgerald, just so that our relatives don't feel awkward, but no brick houses or we are families at our wedding! Although having said that, i am keeping one cheeseball song in my backpocket for the daughter/father dance.
13We're going the I-Pod route as well. Do you really think that many people will be disappointed that there's no bunny hop or chicken dance? LOL!
14me and mia is a song about eating disorders....
15Not so indie but still awesome: When My brother and sister in law walked in to their reception, Billy Idol's "white wedding" was played!
16Elbow- One day like this, Is a great song and would work well
