It's been a long wait for ScarJo's album of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head and we still have until May 20 for the full album, but today we can at least hear the title track. Apparently, the album's producer Dave Sitek was "going for a 'cough medicine/Tinkerbell' vibe" on the album, which it actually helps to know when listening to "Anywhere."
The song has a dreamy/hazy thing going on, with lots of synth. Scarlett's low voice gets somewhat lost in all the percussive stuff, and I could probably do without the drum machine. Something about this reminds me of Annie Lennox, though I wish Scarlett's vocals would take on some more of Lennox's emotion. Overall, though, I give Scarlett a lot of credit for transforming Waits' song into something totally novel.
Update: Sadly, I had to take down the music file for "Anywhere I Lay My Head."

Her voice is lost behind the music. It is almost as if her voice needs to be amplified so I can have a better hearing of her singing. It is not a bad song, I just think it needs a little work on the technical side.
1Hmm. I wanted to like Scarlett's album but if this is representative of the rest of it, I'm not sure I will. I'm not usually a gearhead who critiques production too much (I usually care about songwriting instead) but this sounds so muddy - almost like a demo version instead of a final cut.
And I'm not crazy about Scarlett's voice in this. It sounded much prettier in that version of "Summertime" that was posted a long, long time ago.
I can see why you compared it to Annie Lennox. I was never a fan of hers, though.
I wonder what Tom Waits thinks of it. Oh, and for anyone interested, the original is here.
2Oh, thanks so much for linking to the original, Whip. It is cool to listen to them both back-to-back.
3Hmm... Don't like it.
4If i heard that song on the radio i would quickly turn it off, but because its scarlet I listened to it all the way, its only sorta good because i like her, I am thinking "aw poor scarjo is really trying" but than i think "why is she trying, when she clearly is out of her element"
So in conclusion, it isnt good.
5I didn't like the idea of Scarlet doing an album... but I actually like the song. It sounds kinda cool. I could totally see it being used on a movie soundtrack, which is fitting. I've never heard the original, going to go have a listen now, thanks Whiplashgirlchild.
6My first reaction was "This is a women singing? Seriously? It IS possible to sing low without sounding masculine, ScarJo."
But as the song goes on, I can stand it. I'd never buy the album itself, but I do agree with the comment that it belongs on a soundtrack. It has great ambiance.
7I don't think her voice is that good.
8she needs to stick to her mediocre acting...
9Ouch. The production is really bad. I'll stick with the Tom Waits version.
10wow, this can not be a girl. its ok, but i cant get over how NOT like a girl it sounds. i agree with theperfectscore, she should stick to the mediocre acting.
11ew. awful. i think youre right on with the "annie lennox minus emotion" description.
12WHAT? that's scarlett? she sounds like a man. a man. a man.
13Not a big fan of this version; I wanted to like it, but it just didn't work for me.
14BAD. I'd rather to listen to Heidi Montag.
15she cant sang
16Why the hell would anyone do an entire album of covers. Im confused
And who the hell is Tom Waits?
17She just has a low voice - she doesn't sound like a man. I think Cher has an even deeper, masculine voice and look how well she did!
I can't even really tell if she's a good singer or not, because they threw on so much junk over it. Whenever a producer does that, I think it's very tell-tale of his/her lack of confidence in the singer's ability.
I'll bet that if we all had better reactions to the song, they wouldn't have asked you to take it down, Buzz.
18I didn't get to listen. It was down already, but I don't care for her acting already or her supposed sexpot status, so I am going to assume I don't like her music. yea, pretty much.
19I listened to that song on Youtube and I Like It, I didn't know she can actually Sing, that's better then Lindsay and Paris.
20I'm not very impressed. I went to the album site & under the music link you can listen to samples of all eleven songs.

It's strange to say, but if I didn't know any better, I would have thought I was listening to a different sample of the same song each time. Not to into that deep low voice thing she has going on, no matter who she is supposed to sound like.
21Oops! I meant to post my remark under the 04/24/08 write up!
22I saw Scarlet Johansson's music video and it was pretty boring...

24Yikes! Who the hell is Tom Waits? He is a HUGE musically influence for tons of people. He has been around for years. He concerts sell out in a matter of minutes. He is not everyone's cup of tea but instead of asking who he is maybe you should go look into yourself. That's what I do when I don't know something. We learn something new everyday, right?
25Yeh, what a strange depth. She should try to sing some soul, jazz or whatever in a higher female pitch. Tom Waits is hardly the right stuff for her to sing, even if he's one of her dads (hm?), god bless him & all her dads, so on. Altogether she's really a splendid specimen of a young woman who's got an almost wise sounding voice, for example when I listen to her singin' "Summertime". But fundamentally her album's somehow spicy & at least a seemly competent diversion. It's alright. God bless America - oh,
26& Scarlett Johansson!
I'm sad for her. Great actress - good ... try??? ... at something new??? It's kind of like Nancy Sinatra meets Enya... and not in a happy place... (and my hubby thinks that's a polite review)

28Good grief, it is so mechanically enhanced she sounds like a robot. Ugh, pick a medium starlets.
29And I am so glad she picked tom instead of Dylan's songs to butcher.
