Last week I got to fly down to L.A. to attend the super-fabulous Geek Goes Chic party thrown by TechCrunch and, of course, PopSugar. I flew Virgin America (pictured) and noticed that there is a crazy number of options for staying entertained during the flight! From instant messaging with fellow passengers to watching TV to playing video games — they've got you covered. And when it comes to movies, you have your pick of several different titles, as opposed to having to just suffer through whatever flick they pick. The only catch to watching a movie on the seat back in front of you: the movies cost $7 a pop.
Do you — or would you — shell out the cash for a movie on a flight? Or is $7 just too much, especially given all the other options for entertainment?

If I really wanted to see a movie, maybe. If the flight was along one. Mostly the trivia games in those set ups keep me happy.
1$7 is a bit high for something that used to be free... if it was a really long flight maybe I would to pass the time, but generally I bring books & magazines to read, or just nap.
2Most likely not, unless I was dying to see it. I can play movies on my iPhone so I usually just bring that.
3$7 is a rip-off. That annoys me to the extent I wouldn't fly Virgin when other airlines give movies for free.
4No way.
5I c most people, watch DVD and Movies on their laptops or Ipod. Seems a little odd. I say just bring a book or magazine. I usually bring both on long flights.
6I bought Juno on a flight from DC... it was a long flight and I'd been wanting to see the movie so I felt the money was worth it.
7I'd rather read a book/magazine and use the $7 for a drink.
Virgin is a fantastic airline though. Best flying experience I've ever had.
8its such a rip off when other airlines give you so much more for free.
9That's amazing that Virgin America charges that much for in-flight entertainment, while Virgin Atlantic offers 40+ movies on individual screens at no extra charge. Naturally, because the movies are on individual screens, I got to watch one of my favorite movies -- Bertolucci's The Dreamers -- in its original NC-17 form on my flight from London to LAX.
10If it were a really long flight. I'm so impatient on flights that it would probably be worth it for me.
11$7 is a bit high in comparrison to the $4 headphone rental, I may do it if it was a really long flight, if not there is lots to do on those planes.
12i suppose that it's just the nature of traveling these days... but I'm already paying a few hundred dollars for a ticket... can't they let me watch some movies?
13No, it actually really pisses me off. I flew from utah-phila on delta and first the flight attendant talks about the movies over the speaker as if they're free. When they wouldn't work I asked why and she said they were only free for first class. So basically they false-advertised. That coupled with the fact that an in-flight movie used to be standard for long flights was seriously irritating. It's not that I don't have seven dollars to spare, it's the principle.
14Maybe if it was half that price, a really long flight, and I just ran out of books and magazines, and forgot to upload a movie onto my iPhone.
15I would if it were a really long flight (like transatlantic), and ONLY if there were not an option for free television. I'll flip channels and find something before I'll spend that money on a movie.
16Hellz no.
17I would if it were a newly-released movie. Otherwise, I'd just watch something on my laptop, or if I wanted more privacy: my iPhone. I would be REALLY excited to do the text messaging, though! How fun!! Were any passengers doing it?
18I've never been in an airplane.
But, no, I wouldn't.
19MandyJoBo — Actually, a bunch of us Sugar girls started our own instant messaging chat room, since we were sort of scattered throughout the plane. It was fun! Though it's harder than I thought it would be to type on their little handset things.
20But yeah, you can invite anyone to chat with you as long as you know which seat they were in. It might make in-flight flirting a little easier.
you know, i might pay for a movie if i were on a long flight but i don't know. i'm sued to flying on VA to london from NYC and they have the blockbuster arrangement where they have their own HUGE library so it's just hard to think that you'd have to pay for your movie...but i guess they need to make up the $$ some where since their fare isn't too pricey right?
21It seems silly now, since I can just watch something on my iPod, but I can understand being desperate enough to pay. I was a couple years ago. I was flying by myself, my flight - which was to be several hours long - had been delayed about 10 hours, I'd exhausted all the entertainment I brought with me, and I had another 5 hour layover ahead of me before I could get home. If there was entertainment to be had, I was definitely willing to pay for it.
22I don't know, I might do it. Then again it would also depend on how long my flight was.
Then again, I could also bring my own personal DVD player and watch what I wanted for free
23I don't fly so no. But if I did I would probably have to to keep from having a panic attack.LOL I do think that 7 or 8 dollars is high. I'm with Diva, bring ur own DVD player and watch as many as u want for free.
24The whole US airline system is totally absurd. If you have to pay for a meal on a three hour flight and get a bit of coke. In Europe even in the cheapest airlines even in the baggage class you get something to eat (I don mean peanuts:-D) There is something that airlines in the US should really think about and thats not charging ur passangers even for using the restroom:D
