Well, there were no charitable surprises on American Idol this year. Someone went home during Idol Gives Back week on Thursday, and the announcement literally made my jaw drop. Which of these eight folks couldn't get past the inspirational-song round? To find out and talk about it, just read more.
Michael Johns! Wow. You know, a couple of you pointed out that he was due for a bottom-three scare, and I also wasn't surprised to see him end up there — but out? Like out of the competition? And so soon? And wasn't it mean of Ryan to, just for a moment, pretend like he was going to let everyone stay in? Michael seemed truly stunned — as did his family, as did most of the audience. I didn't picture him staying all the way to the end, but past Syesha and Kristy Lee, for sure.
Speaking of Syesha, she too was in the bottom this week, along with Carly — nothing too remarkable there. It's interesting to note, though, that all of those three have had a hard time with song choice and/or with connecting with a particular fan base. Was it a personalty issue? Did Michael's hotness just stun everyone into complacency? How surprised were you?
As for the rest of the show, it was an hour filled mostly with leftovers that somehow didn't fit into Idol Gives Back. Here are some more of my thoughts:
- So, Idol Gives Back has raised more than $60 million so far, despite the lower-than-expected viewing numbers and the lack of a pay-per-vote incentive. Not bad. I'm guessing the iTunes downloads helped a lot, especially that top-selling opening number.
- How can you not love Forest Whitaker after his Africa videos? It's nice when the people in Hollywood who you thought would be good people turn out to actually be good people, you know?
- Jordin Sparks is adorable. I'm really rooting for her to succeed, and "No Air" seems to be helping her more than "Tattoo" did.
- I know we're at the point in the season that Ryan starts getting all tricky with the eliminations and the who's safe/who's out pattern and all that, but I still didn't expect the first five safe, last three in the bottom outcome.
- Uggghhhhh, John McCain really made a Michigan and Florida delegate joke?
- So, I kinda liked the "Stayin' Alive" goofy dancing montage. Of all the Idol Gives Back leftovers, that's the one I would have most liked to see on Wednesday, just to lighten the mood a wee bit.
Your thoughts on Thursday's show? Were you surprised by the elimination? And who's got some work to do?

I am sad sad sad that my aussie hottie has left. UGH, I never thought he would be the winner but I thought he was better then SYESHA!!!
1SHOCK.
i only watched passed hollywood week for him
he WILL get a record deal so he has a chance to prove himself. dolly wants to write songs for him!
2that was a shock. but so true, record deal immediately.
3i was totally shocked at the opening number... the song about praising Jesus. You would think that with 30 million (or however many) viewers, they would realize that NOT ALL OF THEM ARE CHRISTIAN. That was just too much for me... if I had a Nielsen box and my viewing mattered I would definitely stop tuning in. Luckily I don't and it doesn't... because I'm addicted
And yeah, that was really mean of Ryan. Poor Michael.
4I was and still am in shock!! I knew he wouldn't win, but I seriously thought he would be in the top 3. I seriously think votes got mixed up. I just can't believe that Syesha and Kristy beat him. There is just no freaking way. Something is just not right.
5It was a total shock! Wow. KLC and Syesha should've gone before him! Ugh. But yeah he is definitely getting a record deal.
6I'm really shocked and disappointed. He's been my favorite contestant. I was sure he would at least be in the top three. This really doesn't seem right.
7I am so upset that Michael is gone! He was never the clear cut winner (honestly, I still can't pick one I find worthy enough,) but I thought Michael would at least make it through the top three or four!
8I wasn't surprised to see Michael go. It's all part of my conspiracy theory against idol voting. There is always a surprisingly 'shock' exit (i.e. Daughtry). It tells the audience that they must not be 'texting' or 'calling' enough times. But I bet you in reality Michael didn't get the lowest amount of votes.
I think Elliot Yamin said it best when he described American Idol. He said that it's first (and foremost) a reality show, then it's a popularity contest, and lastly it's a singing competition.
Or I'm probably being too skeptical. LOL!
9"Uggghhhhh, John McCain really made a Michigan and Florida delegate joke?"
Yes, yes he did. And is it just me, or does he sound like the man in the Smuckers commercials? "With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good!"
millarci--I think you're right. Always a "shock" elimination at some point, but I will say that I thought it was a bit early for one of these. Yamin had it right with that comment.
I'll miss Michael, especially since he (IMO) brought the eye candy. Guess it's another few weeks of Kristy Lee's nasally voice (and trust that she'll show more cleavage in the next coming weeks--TRUST), Syesha's annoying mugging for the camera, Cook's egghead, and Carly's ugly tattoo. And speaking of Carly, Michael's elimination totally makes me more angry that she's still on this show. She should have gone home yesterday.
10agreed total shocker and probably the main reason i've been DVRing the show. looking forward to hearing / seeing more of him.
11I'm really not a fan of Michael Johns but SERIOUSLY, WHY is Kristy Lee still here?????
12First, I was swelling with pride last night for predicting the bottom three!
But then I kept
waiting for Ryan to say, "Michael you are safe"...or even when he called out Kristy Lee and Syesha to say, "You are the bottom two." I was totally shocked that Michael went home but like I
said in my comments on performance night- he was first and forgettable. I'm not surprised that his fans assumed he was fine and others just forgot about him altogether.
Also, his niche was definitely in the bluesy rock like Randy said which is why last week he was freaking awesome with the Dolly song. This week he tried to go rocker on us and that role's already been filled on this season by David Cook. Looks aside, those two were nearly interchangeable this week and David's got the bigger fan club.
I was definitely sad to see him go- I had my money on Syesha. I don't know how much more of her I can take.
13Even if you didn't like MIchael, there were DEFINITELY worse people still there. Seriously, the popularity contest just BOTHERS me. But what can you do? I heard someone say once that maybe the contest would be better if you voted who you DIDN'T want to win. But that too might not work because people would get ganged up on. No real way to make it perfect. I just hope MIchael goes on to do good things. And Syesha better go home next week. LEAVE DAMMIT
14I was so shocked and sad! I really liked Michael, and he definitely deserves to be there more then Syesha (who should have gone home WEEKS ago) and KLC.
I like Carly and I like her tattoos.
Ryan was extra mean and it made me really mad. I know stringing people along is part of the show but his little trick was downright cruel.
Hopefully we see more from cute aussie Michael in the future!
15ugh freaking kristy lee! can she please go already? like really, please go.
16well, i guess between top 10 and top 3 it really doesn't matter the kick off order.
sorry if i'm being cruel, i'm just upset with this season.
Uhhhh Michael was totally robbed!!! Although I agree - there is something shady going on with the voting system.
"Jordin Sparks is adorable. I'm really rooting for her to succeed, and "No Air" seems to be helping her more than "Tattoo" did."
17Thank you!! Jordin Sparks IS adorable! She has an amazing voice and awesome lyrics. I like her songs so much I downloaded a ringtone of an exclusive cut from her new song “Young and In Love (Intro)" on this website called Thumbplay ... here's the link: http://www.thumbplay.com/join/Jordin+Sparks-artist-Young+And+In+Love-rea...
My jaw dropped too...next too the Jennifer Hudson elimination way back in the day, that's the most surprised I've been by someone clearly being voted off before they deserved to go. Michael wouldn't have won it all but he definitely deserved to stay in the competition - at least into the top 5!
It was hard to watch too because everyone seemed so shocked about the outcome that the last portion of the show seemed very awkward...there was a total overshadow "we seriously didn't see that coming" vibe. Even normally unflappable Ryan seemed a little flustered...although the open mouthed shock on Paula was pretty funny to see.
Here's hoping Dolly was serious about working with him some more because I would definitely listen to anything they'd collaborate on!
18That was a cold rejection...I did NOT like the way them left him hanging with the possibility of hope there. Just be upfront and don't dangle the possibility of another week in front of the poor guy.
19And it DID really bother me that they sang a praise song? I guess I didn't realize that all of america loves Jesus...or mabye all people with giving hearts must be christians. "But...I don't even believe in Jebus!"
WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!! Sayesha should have gone!!! I was looking forward to her getting the boot. Michael did not deserve to go..*cries* I thought he'd make the top three. Life is so unfair.
20P.S I LOVE jordan...she is such a cutie! And I love "No air". I have been rooting for her since she sang her first not in her audition last yr! Btw total chemistry between her and chris brown
Anyways, I hope there are no more shockers...I don't think my heart can take it.
21shocked!!!!! Kristy Lee should be voted off. She has no star quality whatsoever.
22I said SHUT UP like 50 times. I thought Ryan was pretty cruel too. I'm a little tired of him, he's on this weird power trip these days.
I'm guessing Kristy Lee continues to pull the red state/redneck vote so we're probably stuck with her.
And Jordin was so all over Chris Brown. Oh...Chris Brown. So hot.
23i saw it coming, but i HATE kristy lee and i will pop open a bottle of champagne when she leaves freaking finally (hopefully next week).
p.s. what's with the deity related songs all of a sudden? i'm so over that noise.
24Why has Idol suddenly become Bush country? I have to lobby for separation of church and Idol. Up next week - a pro-life group number that also reminds us the surge is working.
25I loved michael! i was counting on voting for either him or David Cook in the end. I cant stand KLC and David A. is getting on my nerves too. I wish the best for Michael. I think will be seeing more of him
26I was SHOCKED. Michael was my favorite on the show. I have high hopes for him though and wish him all the best! I also thought Ryan was unusually cruel.
27ryan was an a-hole, mentioning last year they didnt send anyone home and then tell michael "but youre bouncin betch"...suuure he didnt use those words, but he might as well have. it was horrible.
28I'm in shock....1)MJ should have been in the final three 2) Jordan looked great but she looked like she was going to pounce on Chris Brown; meanwhile he was trying to keep a respectable distance so that Rihanna wouldn't get upset 3)Ryan was so annoying with his tricks...he always has to stretch his on screen time!
29I was totally shocked that Michael went home...he shouldn't have won the whole competition, but he deserved to stay in a lot longer. Syesha, Kristy Lee, or Carly should have gone home before him.
Although I am a Christian, I did think it was odd that they sang "Shout to the Lord." I thought at least one of the contestants would be uncomfortable with it. However, if it makes you so angry then why not turn off Idol for 2 minutes? I'm sure its not gonna happen every week.
30fish American idol and Fish the funny politics, Michael John let you release your album ( make sure you release it quick ), we will make it platinum.
I was not a fan of Michael when I start watching him but later on I was so impress with him being too shy, his decency and his personality, his voice is so perfect to be our future rock star favorite, I like David A but he has so much time to try and learn
for michael it was so important I guess, You Guys remember his face last night so much pain on his face but he was trying to smile and sing
I am soooo disturb on his elemination, Infect I was having my beer glass in my hand and when ryan start saying ...... I screamed " no Ryan stop it " and threw my glass ( lol I can see stain on my wall)
when I use to watch him singing I use to say to my friends that how much we need a singer like him, a singer with his heavy voice and to remind us some great singer like B adams, Michael Bolton, Chris Rea, Foreigner, queen and many more
someone who could sing near to these Legends was only Michael John ( though he was never my most favorite) but he has something like when you see him walking on street, you will say " hey he must be a singer or Artist
any way I am so disappointed by this results and I really hope we all hear from Michael soon, WE LOVE YOU MICHAEL AND YOU ARE A STAR NOW so please go on on and don't look back,
and warning for Ryan If I see him on the road I will give him run.........for removing Michael ...... lol
take care everyone !!!!!!!

I almost spit up my ice cream with your comment...
33My guess is that Michael and D. Cook share much of the same demographic. Cook's following is likely a bit stronger and his weaker than usual performance probably convinced die-hards and split fans to vote for him to ensure he stayed far away from the bottom 3.
Really not the outcome I was hoping for. Syesha has not lived up to her potential as a vocalist and her confidence so often comes across as arrogance. Ready to say good-bye to her. Carly needs to work it out and right quick if she wants to stay any longer...
34I'm so sad. My only thought would be that maybe since he's older than the rest, he doesn't appeal to the younger (majority of) voters? I don't know, but I think he'll be fine and do well on his own. But it is kind of a slap in the face to him that he was eliminated before Kristy Lee Cook. She's lucky she has that hot bod or else she would've been gone a LONG time ago.
35
treb!
36I don't follow American Idol but I'm Australian and it was all over our news/newspapers that he got voted out - that was the first I heard of it, haha.
