Until some news around TLC's programming came out this week, I never gave a lot of thought to a reality TV subgenre that TLC likes to call "unusual lives." The set includes shows like LA Ink — that's star Kat Von D at left — and American Chopper, and anything else that showcases people working in non-mainstream professions. (TLC has new "unusual lives" shows on the way about a bikini maker and a class at a makeup academy.)
It's kind of a neat little genre of reality TV, more like mini-documentaries than about throwing a bunch of people in a house together and seeing who explodes. On the other hand, how relaxing is it to sit down in front of the TV after work only to watch other people work? Do you like watching these shows about unusual lives?

I just think it's cool. I'm never going to run a tattoo parlor like Kat Von D, so it's neat to watch the goings-on in her shop. Or the American Chopper guys; I like watching the "drama" and my husband likes the bikes, so we both win.
1I love watching L.A. Ink. They are all such amazing artists so it is nice to have a place where they can be showcased.
2i'm not sure how i feel about the question. i like to watch TLC and their shows and a few of the others that are on other networks..and i guess maybe it's partly to do with the 'unusual' life factor but i'm not sure if that's the reason that i tune in. i think that it's just different than the normal programming that's non-reality that's on and it keeps my interest.
3most def!! It just irritates me to see shows like The Hills about these stupid fake girls and their poor poor lives. I like to learn some interesting little factoids from those shows, like Dirty Jobs. Why would you want to see somebody go shopping or hooking up with someone all the time?? That happens in real life all the time.
4I LOVE Dirty Jobs and ghosthunters
5I watch those shows, because the "unusual people" are really just like everyone else, and i watch them to see just that.
6I agree with "i am awesomeness", I like reality television when it's about people with real lives, real jobs or something from the norm, when I feel like I'm actually learning about something new. I can't tell you how much I've learned from "Top Chef" and "No Reservations"... as for shows like "The Hills" and "Big Brother" and all that it's just drama... young pretty people complaining about what they don't have enough of... which is fine for some but irritates me.
7i love these shows, totally love them especially LA and Miami Ink
8I do like them for the documentary angle they afford. I feel the same way about Top Chef and even Dog the Bounty Hunter, before Dog revealed himself to be a jerk. Who knew it would be so interesting to learn about bail bonds?
9LA Ink YEAH!!!! and shows that are about actual people. The Hills (and other show like it) BOO because watching fake high school drama and people who have no jobs but money to BURN while I have real drama, a job, and NO money to burn just isn't right!
10I love watching people in general; I enjoy the psychology and sociology of it. My mom was a psychiatrist, so I think it's in my DNA to try to learn about and understand people. Your analogy is good, they really are like mini documentaries.
11I love all the diff shows. I watch an odd variety
I love LA Ink, John & Kate
plus 8 and a smattering of others. It's always interesting to see other perspectives!
12John & Kate Plus 8 is my favorite of the "unusual lives" reality shows. Then, I also really like Discovery Health Channel's daytime series, "Runway Moms" about pregnant models. Each episode features a different model, and I could go on and on and...
13I think la ink is a good show. without miami ink it would never be possible tho! my favourite is pixie cuz she has a cool look and her tats are pretty fab.
