Ex-Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star Rachel Dratch needs a job. Like, really needs a job. The woman probably best known for Debbie Downer sounded an awful lot like her former character chatting with New York Magazine recently. Talking about her downtime, she said:
I'm starting to go crazy. I’m ready for a job. . . . I'd work in a black-box theater company at this point. I'd work with George W.
Dratch definitely wasn't a good fit on 30 Rock, but given the right role, she can be hilarious. The trick, I think, will be finding the right balance between lovably awkward and flat-out crazy.
If I'm playing career counselor, I'd urge Dratch to stay away from movies: Frankly, if it didn't work for Molly Shannon, it probably won't work for her, either. But she could take a cue from Shannon's more recent decisions and nab a job on TV. To see some places I could picture her landing, just read more.
- The Office or its spinoff — Dratch could have some fun as a new transfer to Scranton, but I could also see her anchoring the as-yet-untitled spinoff. Maybe she's a cranky assistant who hasn't left her desk in 20 years or a gossipy, socially awkward middle manager.
- Miss Guided — If by some miracle this ABC comedy returns, I could see Dratch as a grumpy school counselor and rival to Judy Greer's perky Ms. Freely. And hey, if the show doesn't come back, give Dratch her own show where she plays a counselor.
- Chuck — Suddenly, I'm having a very easy time picturing Dratch as a wisecracking, uniformed government operative.
- Ugly Betty — Playing on Dratch's unconventional looks could be a good strategy — especially if it lands her at the Mode offices as a potential ally for Betty. Or maybe as a faux ally who turns to be evil. Hey, on that show, anything's possible.
Where else do you think Dratch could get a job?

I think she would fit right in with The Office crew! I'm so excited for that show to start back up!!
1On ER as the new intern who makes wisecracks, but eventually saves a life...
On the Ghost Whisperer as Delia's younger sister who comes to live there because she flunked out of college and you find out why very quickly. That show needs some comedy in it.
Army Wives as the new wife who doesn't fit in with the girls because she's always playing practical jokes.
A new comedy with her and Horatio Sans where they play an odd couple...one jubilant and one realistic...
2I think the thing that we all know is that Rachel isn't traditionally "pretty" like, say, Amy Poehler or Tina Fey is. So no matter how funny she might be, a lot of Hollywood types are going to turn her down because of her looks. And on the flip side, the same jerks don't want comediennes to be TOO pretty. You just can't win.
3I second The Office comment. If she acted toned down enough she would be great! I could also see her on Weeds for some reason. Or Samantha Who? I hope she doesn't get some awful competition reality hosting gig or something. She's better than that!
4I agree 100% with the office spin-off idea. I think she would fit right in.
5so true Bella. i love Rachel Dratch and i think she's pretty but not "Hollywood" pretty which really sucks.
But back to the Buzz's question - i think she would be great on The Office or if she made her own quirky show on Comedy Central like "Strangers with Candy."
6I miss 'Debbie"!
7I've always hated Rachel Dratch...
8I'm not so sure how I feel about her joining The Office, but I think My Name is Earl would be perfect for her.
9My Name is Earl is a great idea. I disagree w/the 30 Rock comment, though. I've always liked her and thought she was funny.
10I don't think she would fit in The Office. The humor is different. I agree with Brittfish. She would be perfect in My Name is Earl. Although I like SugarKat's idea (A new comedy with her and Horatio Sans). I like Horatio Sanz.
11I've never really liked her - she played everything way too over the top.
12I saw her on an episode of Monk and was underwhelmed by her acting ability. I hope that she's writing and working on developing stuff and not just telling people she needs work. There are lots actresses in LA, and a lot looking for work even after a couple of steady seasons on sitcoms - sometimes, you get that one break, and that's it. It's more than most people get.
13I love Debbie Downer! She was so fitting for those skits and I mean that in a good way.
14Maybe she'd get more jobs if she didn't portray little boys (Harry Potter anyone?) in virtually every SNL skit...
15thats very true Bella. I could see her on Ugly Betty, though. She has a great figure and is funny, so i think she could be on that show. I dunno what kind of role, though.
16I could see her on the Office or Miss Guided. Btw, Miss Guided is probably not coming back next season? Aw that sucks, I like that show.
17Rachael is funny. Firstly, in the superficial world of Hollyweird, she should get superficial (if only to get a damn job). Rachael needs to hire a fitness trainer, get in the shape of her life, get a cute feminine hair cut and do some injections to give her lips some thickness. With that, she will be A-1 adorable. This make over is essential for her in this biz. Then, she should go for TV. I agree with someone who said it earlier. She will be the cute girl next door with a twist -- quirky and funny. A role is out there, but she must fine tune her appearance. I wish this were not true, but that business is so freakin' superficial. Her former cast mates, Tina Fey and Amy Poeler, from SNL seem to know this about looks and they maximize their looks with toned bods, and hair dos, etc. They are no cuter, just clued in to this aspect of their unfortunate business.
18I would love to see Rachel Dratch on ugly betty. why did she quit SNL in the first place?
19Probably in Ugly Betty
20To jump of Bella's comment, I saw her in person at SF Sketchfest and she looks a lot less "character actor" than she does in most of her roles. She was wearing a cute LBD and dressed completely natural - I could see her having mainstream TV appeal if they didn't put her in oversized clothes and mom jeans
I think she's hilarious.
21According to IMDB, she's got a lot of work:
#1 Odd Brodsky (2008) (pre-production) .... Audrey
#2 Sweet Flame (2008) (filming) .... Carol
#3 Spring Breakdown (2008) (post-production)
#4 My Life in Ruins (2008) (post-production) .... Kim
#5 Love N' Dancing (2008) (post-production) .... Kalle
#6 Harold (2008) (completed) .... Ms. Norris
I agree that she should be on The Office, maybe start out as a temp that comes in and then stays...perfect!
22She could be Murray's love interest in Flight of the Conchords.
