According to Wikipedia, The Phantom of the Opera's 20-year run on Broadway has been "the most lucrative entertainment enterprise of all time." Capitalizing on the beloved musical's major success, creators of the award-winning show now say a sequel is on the way.
Andrew Lloyd Webber confirmed that he has written a new score for a follow-up musical which will pick up where the first story leaves off, starting with "how the Phantom got away in the big fire and was taken to a thriving Coney Island in old New York."
Will it be called The Phantom of Coney Island? And will fans embrace this second installment from Webber? What do you think about this development? Are you keeping an open mind?

I don't care if Andrew Lloyd Webber is behind this sequel. He of all people should realize that a sequel is totally uncalled for!
1I don't know. On one hand, it's Andrew Lloyd Webber and his music is great and I love it. And I might love the music to this too. But, on the other hand, I don't need a sequel. I'm perfectly content to leave the story as is.
2Oh, how I hate this idea. I love Andrew Lloyd Webber and The Phantom even more. No sequel, please.
3they're playing Phantom of the Opera (the 1. part) in Warsaw now
Though I live miles
miles away from there, it's a good news (I'm from Poland).
4A new Webber musical would be awesome. Making a sequel to Phantom? Just seems to much like a spoof, then a part 2
5Jenny, i totally agree, why can't alw just make a new musical, and not a phantom sequel.
UGH
6Phantom is my least favorite Webber musical, so personally I'd rather him do something different. Perhaps he is counting on the popularity of the original to boost interest because he is afraid that anything new wouldn't be able to compete with shows like Wicked. It is also possible that he has always intended to do a second part.
7I love most musicals but I am not an Andrew Lloyd Weber fan for the most part and I always HATED Phantom. So I think it's unnecessary.
8Apparently the often torturous Hollywood trend of tacking sequels onto successes is threatening to invade Broadway. Let's hope this one fails miserably so we don't have to suffer Annie as a teenager, Grease goes to college and Starlight Express on Roller Blades.
9i really enjoyed the original - i've seen it many times on broadway, in nYC and in london as well as the movie. i think that by creating a sequel to something that's a 'time honored tradition' or whatever - it's over kill and it's not going to catch on.
10Love the original, but sending the Phantom to Coney Island seems ridiculous.
11I absolutely love Phantom of the Opera but I don't know about a sequel....I hope it turns out well.
12Just thinking about it...disgusting.
13Don't think this one will work. Love ALW's music but the story came to an end in The Phantom of the Opera. The original should have been filmed with the original stars and that should have been enough.
14I think it would be rather lame. A masterpiece like that isn't MEANT to have a sequel.
15Phantom is an amazing piece of work, it would be next to impossible to continue the story in a manner worthy of the original.
16I am open to a sequal but I don't think that anything will match the original Phantom.
