Well, there's nothing I can say about this week's "Grey's Anatomy" without it being a spoiler, is there? So let's briefly recap what's happened so far: First, Meredith tried to drown herself in the bathtub. Then there was a ferry crash and Mere went tumbling into the water. Derek pulled Meredith out, but she flatlined at the hospital. And the big question going into Thursday's episode was whether Meredith was actually dead.

Well, now we know, so if you want to talk about it, read more
Meredith's alive. Meredith's alive, and I am angry.
It's not that I really wanted her to die; I never sat around and said, "Wow, this show sure would be better if that stupid Grey girl weren't in it."
It's that Shonda Rhimes, Ms. "I-Don't-Play-By-The-Rules" ... played by the rules. Yes, it would have been tough for the biggest drama on TV to kill off its main character. But it would have been gutsy, and no matter what happened, I would have respected the risk. Instead, Meredith's alive, her mom's dead, they had a freakin' conversation in limbo, and everything's going to be fine. And because most of us suspected Meredith would come back, it was hard to care about her "death," which sucked most of the tension out of what should have been a strong episode.

Now, I do believe "Grey's" can still redeem itself. It is intriguing to find out that Mere, who I always thought was just whiny, was actually vaguely suicidal; she didn't want to kill herself, exactly, but she also didn't see the point of living. Shonda has said on her blog and in her podcasts that this is an important journey for Meredith, and so maybe Mere will change as a result. But if the show just moves on from here, assuming Mere has now learned her lesson, I will be even angrier than I am right now, and trust me, nobody wants to see that.
Before I go much further, I should point out a couple of things I actually liked about "Some Kind of Miracle":
- Denny and Dylan bickering in Meredith's afterlife. Their banter was funny, not to mention smokin' hot.
- Cristina. Burke was right; the most important thing in this episode was the relationship between Cristina and the woman she calls "her person." And learning that her dad died in front of her when she was 9 helps to explain why she's so tough.
- George and Callie finally telling off Izzie. I've been a defender of Izzie's, but I'm honestly glad someone finally told her to shut it.
We spend most of the episode flipping between Afterlife Meredith and actual Meredith, who's dying on the table as the episode begins. Dylan and Denny are there to greet Afterlife Meredith, but they're not the only ones: Doc the dog shows up, too, along with Liz Fallon, her mom's former scrub nurse, and Bonnie, the girl who died after being impaled in the train wreck. I think the idea was to bring back patients who had meant a lot to Meredith, but I thought Liz was more of a learning experience for Cristina, and I had to look up who Bonnie was.

Anyway, they tell Afterlife Meredith that she's a little too happy to be dead and ask her to explain what happened in the water. She keeps insisting she fought, and finally Denny asks her about the bathtub. (Mere: "You see me in the bathtub?" Heh.) Dylan reminds Meredith that he died saving her, and Denny tells Meredith she has to decide to live: George needs her, and Izzie needs her. Once you're dead, Denny says, there are no more moments with the people you love.
Back on earth, the chief is trying to save Meredith like she's his own daughter, which I suppose she almost was. Cristina can't handle the possibility of Meredith's death and instead goes shopping at the dollar store, ending up drunk at Joe's bar with a stash of hand lotion and tiny plastic chairs until Burke finally convinces her to be there for her "person." Izzie gets snotty with Callie, and Callie tells her that she has a choice: accept that George wants Callie around, or become "that person George used to know." And Derek yells at Ellis, saying everything good about Meredith happened despite Ellis.
Afterlife Meredith decides she's ready to go back. "I had intimacy issues!" she says. "You know how stupid that seems now?" But the peanut gallery of patients tells her she might be out of time. The one who's really out of time, though, is Ellis, whose heart fails while Burke is downstairs trying to save Meredith. Ellis and Afterlife Meredith meet in the Afterlife hallway, Ellis tells Mere she's anything but ordinary, and Mere runs back toward the land of the living.
The doctors are about to give up on Meredith when Cristina bursts into the room and yells at the doctors to try again. And of course they do, and of course soon there's a heartbeat. Cristina pleads with Mere to say something, to prove her brain works, and when she eventually does, Cristina blurts out that she's marrying Burke.
Derek and Meredith's reunion is pretty dull by comparison, but Addison watches from the hall and says aloud that Derek never loved her that way. Mark says he did, and Addison says maybe she'll give him another shot if he can go 60 days without sex. He says Addison has to go without sex, too —
— and speak of the devil, there's Alex! He spent the episode bonding with the Jane Doe, who can't remember anything from before the crash. He's been very gentle and kind with her, and I hope they don't just leave that story in the dust.
Meanwhile, Izzie tells George she knows she's let him down, and George just walks away. Richard says his final goodbyes to Ellis. And Izzie stops still in the hallway and the camera takes a little spin around her, showing that Denny is there.

Were you satisfied with this arc? Are you baffled as to why "Grey's" thought it needed a stunt like this, or did it teach you something big about Meredith? And where does the show go from here?

I really liked it, but my best friend and I wonder if the word "devastating" was the right word to be used in the previews...
1This episode was very boring. I wanted Meredith to die but since she didn't they coulda made it a bit more dramatic than they did. It was terrible and they only showed McSteamy for a few minutes!
2Okay so here are my thoughts!
Merideth-I knew she wouldnt die but I was hoping that she would be in a coma or something. There was too much in the hospital heaven that was confusing to me....telling her yes your dead or no you should go back. She was being an idiot (as usual) and not listening. I did find it interesting how she admited to not fighting the whole time though.
Christina-I felt a little bit like we went back to when Denny died and Izzy went to the bar. Yea a little Deja Vu for me. I did love that burke went and told her to go say goodbye to "her person". Christina felt more real in this episode
Izzy/George/Callie-I wish they would stop making George be such a baby! That ignoring crap is getting old, he does it all the time. Izzy needs to start butting out of stuff and i feel like this izzy/george thing is far from over.
Derek-I love how he told the mom off, didnt like that she died at that pivital moment when merideth was dying. I didnt care much for the reunion, I was waiting for some big thing like a proposal or something. I like how at the end he was spooning her in the hospital bed.
MY FAVORITE...Denny telling Merideth when you pass, you only get brief moments when you are both in the same place at the same time but dont get to see them or hear them. At the the end of show, my eyes welled up with tears as they passed, Denny calling for Izzy and she felt it.
There is so much more...but those are what sticks out for me.
3I was bummed by the "dull" (you are so right Buzz!) reunion between Meredith and Derek. Where the heck is all their chemistry????????????????? I can't stand Izzie's hypocritcal attacks on George's relationship with Callie (though not a big Callie fan), I mean please her relationship with Denny was not exactly a good idea- so who the heck is she to judge?
4This episode was anything but dramatic. All that advertising and hyping this entire third installment up for nothing.
I forgave the show last week for ending with some lame cop-out afterlife crap scene, which we all knew was going to end with Meredith surviving and coming to. But the whole episode cut with scenes of her in a surreal afterlife? Arguing with Denny and Dylan (who she didnt know that well, hello!). It was the definition of LAME.
And when Derek started yelling at Ellis, I knew she was going to die. The passing between Mere and Ellis in the afterlife couldve been so much more poignant than it was. What a let down.
And Mere doesnt have brain damage? No temporary loss of memory? Her first word is a wry, "ouch"!? Thats stupid. It doesnt even make sense.
5controlledspin - totally agree with you on the word choice of 'devastating.' when i heard that, i thought, 'uh-oh...mer is gone.' but...not so much.
kendalheart - i cried too at the very end with denny and izzie. that was the BEST part of the whole episode. of the whole 3-part arc and it only lasted a mere 45 seconds or so.
by the end of the episode with this whole "is she or isn't she dead" business, i really wanted meredith to die. otherwise, why the heck did we just go through all of this? the only thing i learned about meredith is that she is a late 20s/30-something woman who acts like she's a 15-year-old who needs some prozac. bah! it was like, if meredith was going to come back as we all KNEW was going to happen, then don't create false suspense for us! what a cliche plot!
6The episode was good but I agree with the other comments...the moment Derek and Meredith were reunited should have been bigger...and Izzie is getting on my nerves. Also, I am glad to learn the backstory on Christina. I had tears in my eyes because of the emotion she showed finally.
I enjoyed Denny & Dylan being back on the show....those characters are missed.
7Yeah the only redeeming parts were the Cristina storyline and Denny. HOTNESS! He is so sweet in his role.
Also, did anyone notice what appeared to be a huge hickey on Heigles neck as she walked away from Denny?
8Yeah, they didn't even allude to any "brain damage" that she may have.........
9However, the end with Denny and Izzie made the episode!
I really liked the episode. I loved seeing Denny again! And true, Mer is the most boring character on the show, but I'm glad she didn't die.
10I really liked the show, but it was a little disappointing. It could have been much more dramatic, and it was a little anticlimatic because everyone knew Meredith wasn't going to actually die. I thought Derek's acting kinda sucked. For someone who was about to unexpectedly lose the love of their life, he didn't seem overly upset. He barely cried, and when he did, it just didn't seem very believable. And their reunion was just kinda like 'ooh yay you aren't dead.' I would think that there would be a lot more emotion in that situation. Overall though I thought it was very interesting and I hope Meredith becomes a stronger character. Oh and I loved Cristina last night!
11i wasn't satisfied. i hated that i knew what was coming. it wasn't like "pink mist" or other episodes where I was biting my nails and yelling at the TV completely into it. Instead I was complaining that Mer was going to see her mom a few minutes before it happened... scoffing when it does.
I COMPLETELY agree that the writers PLAYED BY THE RULES and I was disappointed. Shonda never should have made that such a big deal - what a let down.
And what was with Bonnie? Seriously. I thought she was unnecessary.
Although i've ranted there was a lot that i liked too. 1. Man is Patrick Dempsey a great actor. I fall in love with him every week. He did a great job acting in these past three episodes. 2. SO happy to see Doc! 3. the izzy/denny moment was perfect. 4. Most importantly - I'm excited to see where the rest of the season will go. They took care of a lot of issues, reoccurring themes from this season and last. I think our old Christina is back and Mer should be less "dark and twisty" from here on out.
hehe. i usually like short and sweet posts. i guess i had a lot to say!
12Now that I think about it, Derek was totally lame too. he was much more emotional last episode.
13This was seriously expected. I mean.....you knew they wouldn't kill off THE main character. Derek was so disappointing. The only parts of the episode that I liked were Cristina and Denny. Cristina was amazing. I feel like we've almost never seen her hurt this badly. I enjoyed seeing Denny back. That was the sweetest/saddest part of the episode!
14It was the best part, but I hated how Izzie just ran off afterwards, leaving Denny staring after her. I guess thats what he meant when the people alive just move on...
15I'm not a huge Meridith fan but I'm glad they didn't kill her off. It would have been annoying to have them crying and dealing with her death for the rest of the season. I do hope they don't dismiss her suicide attempt and address it some more.
16I thought the whole "afterlife" scenes could have been stronger. Meredith never has anything of real intelligence or depth to say. I did love seeing Denny again and it made me wish that they didn't kill him off.
I really loved the Christina scenes especially her going shopping to a dollar store to deal with her grief. I wonder why the writers seemed to put more importance on her and Meredith's friendship more than Meredith relationship with Derek. Christina was the one that pleaded with them not to stop and she was the one that held on to her to encourage her back. Not Derek. To answer Slumming's question. It's because there is no chemistry. Which is why I feel the scenes with Christina were better. There is nothing like a true friend.
I was so disappointed! FALSE ADVERTISING! The second one had way more suspense. I feel like I learned much more about Christina. I was expecting Derek to run to Meredith and to have something intense happen...but no...nothing. And...in my opinion it would have been way better if Meredith had some sort of brain damage. just so disappointing. the only think i enjoyed was the "meeting" between izzie and denny. so sweet and sad. oh well, I should have watched the OC.
17I couldn't have cared less about the Meredith storyline. When the opening monologue talks about miracles happening, it doesn't really leave much suspense. But I actually thought the Izzy/George/Callie storyline was really good in this episode. Izzy has majorly been getting on my nerves with her Callie hate, but in the same way that Meredith is Cristina's "person," I think George is Izzy's "person." She's just upset that everyone is moving on without her. You can't forget that only like 9 mos. ago she lost the man she was going to marry. I guess it would be upsetting to see your "person" move on to having someone else be the most important person in their life when you just lost that. The Izzy/Denny scene at the end really made me tear up. They have more chemistry than Meredith/McDreamy ever had/will have.
18This could be the Jump the Shark episode. I agree with a lot of the posters before me - it was dull and confusing, although I find most plotlines about Meredith and McDreamy dull. Maybe if I watched the episode without commercials...I dont know. It was well conceived, but something was just off.
However, it did confirm for me that Addison is my favorite character - I hope this spin off idea works out well, or else they leave her where she is.
19Also! Sorry, but I just thought of this after I pushed the post comment button - it would have been more interesting if something was wrong with Meredith after she came back, like if she lost her speech or had some mild form of brain damage (which work well with McDreamy as the brain surgeon, blah blah blah), if she wasnt perfectly fine - like Burke after he got shot, or when Forman lost some brain function after he had that disease on House. Bah. I dont know. I am just disappointed. Cristina, the chief, and Addison made this episode for me - even Bailey was disappointing (though I loved the foreshadowing that she will be the next chief).
20Great recap!
21I loved the episode, but I watched it with my dad (who is a doctor) and I just wanted him to stop talking. On the other hand he did point out something very important. After not having any activity (heart, brain) for an hour she would most likely be brain dead. So we were kind of suprised that nothing was wrong with her brain.
I do not focus on that though.
I LOVED Christina in this episode!!! Especially when she came in and was holding Merideth's feet, and then telling Meridith that she was ok! It was so great! I love them!!
When Richard was talking to Ellis at the end it was sad, but I do not think that Ellis' death was as devistating as it was supposed to be. I mean Meridith wasn't even that upset, well at first, there is no saying what she will be like next week.
I was so proud of myself that i made it all they way through the whole episode without crying( it almost happens every episode) and then as Izzy & Denny were in the same spot at the very end and they both stopped! I totally lost it! ahhh it was the best part of the whole episode!
22Who cried during the whole thing. I did -- It was a great show. So do you think Denny went towards the light -- no long waiting for Izzy.
23"even Bailey was disappointing (though I loved the foreshadowing that she will be the next chief)"
As in chief resident -- not chief of the hospital -- anyone? Buzz
24Wow, these are harsh comments! I thought this was one of the best-written episodes yet! True, it wasn't as suspenseful because I knew Mer wasn't going to die, but I still wanted to know what was going to happen in the Afterlife and how she was going to come back. I expected her to have memory loss or something, but I"m sure more will develop in the next few episodes.
And for the people complaining about the reunion between Derek and Meredith -- it would have been too stupid and dramatic to have him make a huge scene when she came to. The show is much better than that. I thought they played out the emotional stuff brilliantly.
I also really hope they don't just drop the Jane Doe story...I want to know if/how she gets identified.
As for Addison - i feel like there was some kind of foreshadowing with her and Alex, like when she said "who would I be having sex with?" and it flashed right to alex.... I hope that is the case! I think they would make a great couple! They definitely have a lot of chemistry.
I hope Grey's can continue to keep making good episodes with the right amount of drama, becuase it seems like they've done so much already, like what more can they do? But I'm sure Shonda will think of something.
25Right, Dream -- Chief Resident, not Chief of Surgery. She and Sydney (and maybe Callie) are in the running for it. In an earlier episode, Sydney made it clear that she wanted it, and Bailey kind of shrugged it off like she didn't care. But last night Sydney said Bailey was going to give her a run for her money, and Bailey said "Yes, I am" — so it looks like she's ready to compete for the job now.
There was foreshadowing earlier that Richard wants Bailey to be Chief of Surgery eventually, but she's still several years too young for that.
26this was the dumbest episode i have yet to see. i mean, they have sunk to the level of ER.. all VERY unrealistic, and because of that, it blew the entire thing.. lets remember, meredith was in the water without o2 for HOW LONG?! from the episode it seemed like a REALLY long time, she was then DEAD for how many hours after that? they should have at LEAST had her in a coma, to wake up, breathe on your own and actually talk and know whats going on around her?!! i mean COME ON!!! how impossible and chessy could that get?!
and the the pole lady, seriously.. how heavy was that pole that was ON HER HEAD!! then, she is coherant, awake, and able to move it???? seriously.. that and hearing of a possible spin, oh and then having re-runs for the next 2 weeks has sunk greys in my mind.. just call it ER with better looking people.
27I think I spent most of the episode rolling my eyes and muttering "predictable" in my head. To use Meredith's favorite word...Seriously! I expected so much more. Please, Grey's, don't turn into another ER with a more pointless disaster/tragedy nonsense every week. I felt like the only real part of the show was Richard talking to Ellis after she's died.
28Thanks for correcting me, Dream and Buzz. I can't keep my Chief positions straight. I remember the Richard quote now - the point is, Bailey will finally get her due and I will be a happy girl.
29I'm happy Meredith is still alive !!!!! OK another thing that was great is George and Callie telling Izzie to shut it !!!!!
30I think the best parts of the show were Denny and Izzie. I love that guy. He is a great actor!! I feel bad for Izzie. She is driving everyone away from her.
31Also, I liked Derek's story. Breaking down and believing that she killed herself was totally believable. I hope my man has that kind of emotion about me if something happened.
I have loved Grey's since the beginning, but I don't think I have ever been more disappointed with a particular episode than with this one. Every time a commercial break came on I would just sit there thinking that it couldn't get worse and then it did. I knew Meredith wasn't going to die but by the end of the episode I was hoping she would. And then when she woke up just fine with no brain damage, it ruined all the credibility the show had. I honestly think that if the show doesn't do something quick they are going to loose a lot of fans, myself included.
32Maybe I missed something but can anyone tell me why Izzie detests Callie and is against the marriage?
33She doesnt think it will work and possibly i think she thinks George is too good for her?! (izzy)
34That's what I was thinking but not sure, thanks! It's a bit of a strange character trait to give her.
35I thought the episode was very strange. Meredith should have had some kind of problem after waking up even for a little bit. I like Cristina the best. I totally missed whatever happened between Izzie and Denny.
36i agree with most of you guys. i loved the part with denny and izzy.. made me almost cry. christina is one of my favorite characters, so i loved that she came back for her person. i loveeeee alex. ahh. he's sweet underneath it all
37oh yeah i also liked the part when denny said you only get moments with the ones you love, and meredith said she didn't want just a whiff of derek, etc.
the episode was disappointing and so expected
38Could Izzie be jealous that George loves someone else and has moved beyond needing her as a soul mate? Whatever is going on, she is really getting on my nerves. Like most everyone else who has posted, I was disappointed with last night's episode. The ending was anything but "devastating"--predictable, maybe, but certainly not devastating. Wonder if Derrick will tell Meredith that his harsh words to her mom may have been the cause of her heart failure? Oh, well, he did try his best to save her in the end. I had hoped last night's episode would have moved beyond the ordinary; guess I was expecting way too much. I just mostly wanted the hour to be over.
39BORING!!!! Although Christinas shopping trip was hilarious
40ARGGG. The worst episode I've ever seen...the lamest, most predictable one ever. When she flatlined I got so excited, I have really grown to hate Merediths character. It was so obvious her mom was gonna die.
I expected Marley's ghost to walk down the corridor of the hospital to tell Meridith about how Seattle Grace would have been without her.
Christina's little side story was good. That was it. I'm giving it a few more episodes and then I'm over it.
41That was an interesting episode. It's sad her mother died. I love the scene when Meredith was in limbo between life and death. And the bantering between Denny and the bomb squad dude was pretty amusing. When Christina went to the bar and showed the bartender the things she bought at the 99 cent store was hilarious.
42I agree with the general thoughts here but would also about George being such a wuss. I'm glad he told Izzy to shut it.
I can't stand Izzy like this. Why is she being such a biatch? It's not even like she just hates Callie. She disses her to her face and the her friend/the man dating her. WTF? If my best friend ever treated my boyfriend/husband like that, she'd be in trouble.
I really only like the first episode of this trilogy. I knew they wouldn't kill the title character. And I think the brought back Dylan, Denny (who Crispet was right about, she didn't even know him) and the Pole Girl because they were favorite guest characters. Pole girl was stupid though. What's with the constant "I'm upset now so I'm going to start bleeding."
I wish this show was more about Addison, McSteamy, Bailey and Callie than the annoying interns(except Christina and Alex).
What's funny though is how long they tried helping her. Any other patient, they would've given up hours before.
haha, that was like five posts in one.
43I wonder if this whole limbo-filled-with-people-who-died-at-the-hospital will reappear in another episode....?
44I am just so sick of George! I've never been a fan, but this is just getting to be too much! He needs to stop being a little baby and move on.
45PhatE - SOOOOOOOOO TRUE!!!! Love your comment. Couldn't agree more.
46Luxifer, I thought the same thing about the doctors giving up on any other patient !
All and all, a very predictable episode... And I found it really hard to believe that the dead persons that were the most significant for her were these persons. Hello, grandfather, grandmother, uncle ? anything ? I also don't understand why they make such a big deal of Dylan... We only saw him for 2 episodes. Sure he was an interesting character, but c'mon !
That being said, I loved McSteamy/Addison's "deal", George and Callie telling Izzie off (she's really getting on my nerves) and Christina, who's probably my favorite character.
47seems like almost everyone feels the same way but i'm just gonna say it again: disappointing and lame! Sure there were some highlights (which already have been mentioned by all the other comments!) but yeah, i sincerely hope there is no more of the whole limbo-dead patients thing. To me, that was not necessary at all!
48I know the show's called Grey's Anatomy but her story lines are a bit disappointing. I hope they focus more on the Addison, McSteamy, Karev storyline and it was sweet to see Karev with his Jane Doe.
49Isn't Addison going to be leaving since she's signed for her own spinoff?
When I was watching, I was wondering why Izzie was being such a b!tch but reading all the previous comments explain why... Since it is true that the people close to her are all paired up, married or engaged to be married and that she did lose her fiance. I wish they'd make that a little more apparent on the show rather than making her seem like a b!tch for no reason.
yeah the whole izzy vs callie thing came up out of nowhere...it's kind of weird watching it, like it doesn't make sense.
and does anybody else feel like meredith has no real personality? other than being kind of 'me, me, me' all the time. the show is so great cuz they have great side characters, and focusing the whole time on meredith and how she was so necessary to other people's lives didn't make a good episode.
shondra rhimes keeps saying she doesn't play by the rules, but she TOTALLY does! (it's strange to hear the writer bragging about how great the show is...that is what PR people are for.) oh well. hopefully the writers come to their senses and go back to the usual kind of grey's episodes after this.
