Breach opens this Friday, Feb. 16, and it looks like Ryan Phillippe is mumbling his way through yet another movie he doesn't deserve to be in. In this true-life tale that — like the Enron saga — just begs to be made into a movie, Phillippe plays young Eric O'Neill, an FBI agent hopeful assigned to work with renowned operative Robert Hanssen, played by the excellent Chris Cooper.
It turns out, however, that Hanssen is an FBI mole who has been eluding his own bureau for years and is suspected of having committed the worst breach in the history of U.S. intelligence. O'Neill is selected to acquire enough hard evidence to bring Hanssen down. I'll let you know when I post my review on Friday if Phillippe ruins what looks like an interesting story. L.a.p.a.
Breach looks like it has real potential. Can't wait to hear your thoughts since it's at the top of my to-see movie list.
1I agree with you that Ryan Phillippe doesn't deserve to get such meaty roles. He's just not that good an actor. Although he has improved a lot in the last few years.
2I also have never understood why he mumbles so much. Boy needs speech training badly.
However, most movie actors are horrendous mumblers.... drawback of the medium i guess. As a mainly stage trained actor I can't understand why movie actors get away with mumbling so much.
3He is definitely not a very good actor. He peaked in Cruel Intentions. I just saw Flags of Our Fathers and was glad that he didn't ruin that one for me. Luckily there were many other characters to focus on.
