Seems like there is plenty of odd musical news going around right now, and one of the strangest ideas I've heard is A Very Brady Musical, which will take to the stage in L.A. on June 6.
At first glance this is really unappealing. Upon closer inspection though, it seems like the producers have come up with a clever twist, calling this the Brady Bunch for grown-ups:
Through a misunderstanding, the Brady kids overhear a loud argument between their usually perfectly-in-love parents. The kids think their parents might be heading for a divorce and dig in to raise money to obtain marriage counseling for their woe-stricken parents. Greg operates a car service; Marcia dates for money; Peter and Jan put on magic shows; and Bobby and Cindy look for money in couches. Did you ever imagine what the Bradys might look like in a holding cell at the local police station? Somehow even Alice gets in some legal trouble for fraud.
So, that sounds hilarious, and maybe this will be like Avenue Q for the Bradys. What do you think? Is a Very Brady Musical something you'd pay to see?

This idea has been around for ages. More than ten years ago, I went to see "The Real Live Brady Bunch" in Boston, a live show where adults act out episodes word for word. But just through inflection, innuendo, and body language, it is VERY adult and VERY dirty and VERY hilarious.
Example: in one scene, they all heard a weird noise in the middle of the night and snuck out to see what it was. Alice brought a baseball bat and Mr. Brady took it from her. After they found out the noise was just Peter, Alice asked for "her roommate" (the bat) back. Just through body language, they implied that Alice was using the bat for, um, something very personal. Childish, yes, but hilarious.
And it was a musical episode (the one where they perform songs but Peter's voice keeps breaking) so there was plenty of singing and dancing.
Anyway, yes, I saw it once and I'd go again. If you're into kitsch and retro stuff, it's worth it.
1no - i think i'd have to pass on a musical. the movie was enough for me - i do'nt need to see singing/dancing bradys.
2Actually, it does seem as though it has some potential. I probably would go see it.
3I bet it will be tongue in cheek and a little off kilter which might make it funny. I'm sure there will be little sexual innuendos and a lot of poking fun at the wholesomeness of the original series much like the movie. Might be cute.
4Oh sorry, Whiplash, didn't read your original post before writing. I guess you confirmed my thoughts on the matter.
5H to the No.
