Yesterday, I asked you whether you preferred to watch movies that make you think or movies that purely entertain you. Most of you said it depends on your mood, though of the other options, escapism was winning pretty handily over thinking/feeling.
So, now I'm wondering the same thing about television. Would you rather watch a tough show that makes you work for the payoff, or a show that just lets you tune out and be amused or entertained for a while? And are your preferences different for TV than for movies?

Escape, definitely.
1Comedy or drama, the shows I stick with are well-written and well-paced; they know what they are supposed to be, they respect my intelligence as a viewer and are packed with meaningful dialog and talented actors who don't try to overreach their limitations.
2whatever it is... i need it to be well - written. i love Lost and West Wing - which make me think. But i also love Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls.
3It's not enteratining if it's all bubblegum and drama. How can you be intrigued by something that is formulaic?
4it really depends on my mood i think - for why i watch tv. i think that sometimes i just like to watch fluff since my daily grind is so stressful. i don't think taht many shows are really allowing for me to escape reality - but it's something to enjoy i guess.
5Same for movies with me- it really depends on mood. I totally watch American Idol to escape, because it's the best "zone out after a stressful day at work" show. But back in Season 2 when Grey's was AMAZING, I could never have paired that show on the same night as AI. It was just way too emotional. I would cry at nearly every episode, then flip on my TiVoed Office to try to cheer me up before bed
6I feel like the two are not mutually exclusive. There are a lot of really smart "dramedies" out there these days.
7I want to be engaged or entertained. I love My Name is Earl and The Office, but I can't think of any tv dramas that appeal to me right now. I've watched Grey's twice but I find the dialogue pretty excruciating; I watched Big Shots once, and practically ran screaming from the room!
8Just like yesterday with the movies, both! I love to watch shows like Six Feet Under that make me think, but I'm also completely devoted to shows like The Office and Pushing Daisies, that aren't as brain-heavy.
9both, i suppose! i don't find i watch shows that are JUST entertaining all the time. i like to watch say corner gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie (and I love the Return of Jezebel James!) for pure fun, but then i like veronica mars, grey's anatomy and that kind of stuff where the story needs to be well-written and more mature.
10It kind of depends on my mood.
