This week, Law & Order: SVU announced something of a casting coup, saying it had gotten Robin Williams to guest-star on the show's 200th episode on April 29. It was already a big week for news about cameo appearances, anyway, as we're now counting down the days till Britney's big appearance on How I Met Your Mother.
Show producers seem to especially love getting big-name guest stars for milestones and key ratings periods, like the February and May sweeps — and I expect we'll be seeing more guest stars this spring as shows try to drum up some attention in the aftermath of the writers' strike. I'm wondering: Do you like it when big-name actors or personalities show up on your favorite TV shows? Or do you just find it distracting?

The best example of shoehorning in a "celebrity" - Paris Hilton on Veronica Mars. Not a good idea but the network wanted it.
1I hate it, it's so desperate and and rarely honors the integrity of the show. It's pathetic.
2susanec, yeap, you're right, that one was out of place.
i kinda like other ones, but Robin Williams on Friends was stupid. Britney on Will And Grace (which I saw for the first time 5min ago so this pole is kinda psychic
) was strange as well, but for me it is fun to see celebrities on shows -
it's quick and different from movies or music videos they usually do.
I loved seeing Brad Pitt on Friends, and saw Assasination of Jesse James... yesterday and it's wonderful to see how they can act.
3It depends on how they utilize them. I think Scrubs brings out the best in their guest stars, Nip/Tuck makes everyone look as psychotic as humanly (and unhumanly) possible.
Back when Will & Grace was on, it seemed like they celebrated stunt casting. It was just plain annoying. With the exception of that hilarious Matt Damon-in-a-gay-men's-chorus episode.
4Robin Williams is bound to ham it up on Law and Order! Sure to be some wacko... Did anyone see Cynthia Nixon play a full-on crazy? Classic.
5I liked when Brad was on Friends and there were some good Will and Grace's.
6I think Robin Williams will do good on SVU. Watching Insomnia the other day makes me think this.
7it depends- demi/madonna no, ha, can't think of any other famous people who was hyped enough to make me watch and then left me disappointed.
8Usually all the high profile guest stars on Law and Order (all of them) end up being stand out episodes - Whoopi on Criminal Intent as the Foster Mom of the murdering group of boys - or Cynthia Nixon on SVU as the pretend schizo - Also, Medium is another show that has great guest stars. But as far as comedies go - Nah, I will pass.... well Brad Pitt on Friends was good - yummy Brad
9i think that it's great for celebs to make special appearances. it's good to see that they are willing to join an ensemble for a day and do something different. i do'nt think that it takes away from a show at all - and at times it even enhances it.
10its disappointing. i so know how it happened. richard belzer's personal assistant's personal assistant just got married to robin williams' son. ick.
11laneylaney says that Williams is bound to ham it up on L&A. I don't think do. All trtuly gifted comics (of which Williams is one) are usually also gifted dramatic actors. Remember "Good Will Hunting"?
12Who cares about L&O or Robin Williams. It/He is so old.
When is Brit's appearance going to be again?
13i think its cool, i love SVU with Robin Williams he's such an amazing actor! I didn't watch Britney Spears on How I Met Your Mother but my sister said she was good. It can't hurt, more people watch when big-named people come on the show.
14Also Ludacris and Cynthia Nixon on SVU were CLASSICS!! They usually are the best episodes!
