When reading this casting news today, I got the eerie feeling that someone out there overheard my silent prayers for there to be a) more lead roles for talented female comedians, b) more funny film opportunities for John Krasinski, and c) more promising light-hearted movies in 2008. Now, the hilarious SNL star Maya Rudolph has been paired with Krasinski and given the lead role in a relationship-themed comedy. Amen!

Variety reports that the untitled film will be directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) and "follows an expectant couple (Krasinski, Rudolph) as they travel the country in search of a place to put down roots and raise a family." Other fun facts about this project: Cheryl Hines will co-star, and the screenplay was written by Dave Eggers and his his wife, novelist Vendela Vida.
With Baby Mama starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on the way to theaters this Spring and now this news about Rudolph, I'm overjoyed that some of my favorite female comedians are no longer relegated to goofy best-friend sidekick roles. These are the actresses that I find more interesting and relatable as leading ladies, especially compared to some of what we've seen this year. Are you guys as excited for this as I am?

Yay! That's awesome. Maya Rudolph is my favorite SNL personality.
1I'm happy as long as the following conditions are met:
1) The script is actually funny and somewhat believable (I'm looking at you, License to Wed peeps)
2) Filming of the movie doesn't interrupt John filming on The Office
3) Along with the previous point, no funky wigs for John! That thing that he was wearing last season while filming Leatherheads and The Office was like a brunette cousin of Donald Trump's hairpiece
4) Both Maya and John get equal screen time
5) Along with the previous point, that Maya and John actually have chemistry (yes, looking again at the License to Wed peeps)
If the fore mentioned conditions are met, I'm all for this movie. Especially if it had a good title.
BTW, Sam Mendes previously worked with John on Jarhead and Maya and John both did voices in Shrek 3, but most likely met before with John being a SNL follower/friend.
2Love Maya!
3I ♥ John Krasinski!
Maya gets on my nerves sometimes. Hopefully she won't be playing something ridiculous and will just be a real person in this movie.
4Well I love Eggers and Krasinski, so this can't be all that bad
5I love John! I hope this is better than License to Wed.
6Bring it on! I can't wait.
7AAAAHHH! I am soo excited! I love BOTH OF THEM so much! I will always be an SNL girl at heart and in my opinion The Office is the best tv! I cannot wait!
8Dave Eggers writing a romantic comedy? That really surprises me. I'm not familiar with his wife's work. But still, I'm really curious about this one.
I'm never one to see a movie just because someone I like has been involved with it, though. It has to look really good. So, we'll see...
9The combo of Sam Mendes and these two actors makes me excited to see this. I also agree that I'm looking forward to seeing some lighter films in 2008. Not that I didn't enjoy those that came out in 2007, but a little more variety would be nice this year.
10I love John K. and Maya and this sounds promising. However, I agree with sorano916's conditions.
11I'm torn. Love John, but not so keen about Maya.
