Between following the antics of the rich folks on ABC's Dirty Sexy Money, the "true-life" tribulations of the Real Housewives of the O.C. — and now their New York City counterparts — on Bravo, and the MTV series that follows wealthy teenagers as they plan for their extravagant 16th birthday parties, do we really need another program about rich people?
The CW renewed Gossip Girl and is now developing another book-to-TV series about "filthy" rich teens. Are you choking on all this wealth? Or is this world of glamour (and in the case of My Super Sweet 16, tantrums) endlessly intriguing?

I find it annoying as hell, to be honest. I was hoping against hope that people would get over the fascination with these vapid people (not that all rich people are vapid), but apparently the American public can't find anything better to watch, so the ratings stay high, and we're stuck with it.
1Yeah, I could do without them.
2No way. I love them.
3I HATE THOSE SHOWS but... I want 1 MORE!!! Its a reality show where we take all of the filthy rich airheads, strip them of all of thier money, give it to about 10 families in real need and make the airheads start from scratch all by themselves. HA! Now that would be GREAT TV!!!
4I love it.
5- except for My Super Sweet Sixteen, lol.
6My first thought was to say that these shows are symptomatic of the deep issues facing our country, and the reason that our economy is tanking from the credit crunch.
Then I realized that heck, people have ALWAYS been interested in the lives of the rich...
I don't watch any of these shows though. I think they're stupid.
7I don't mind the shows that are currently on tv but we do NOT need anymore added to the shows we already have.
8gossip girl is in a league of its own
9YES except for gossip girl.
10i'm blame all of this on that reality show Rich Girls. Remember that show on MTV, with tommy hilfiger's daughter?
No. Rich people can be so petty and so glamorous. I love to watch them.
11I am for sure sick of those reality rich people shows. Sure they are entertaining to watch, but you can only have so many of them on television at one time.
12It's just escapism. Though I do think TV producers are seriously overlooking the entertainment and storytelling potential of poverty. How about a Great Depression sitcom?
I must say, "Dirty Sexy Money" is one of the most awkward titles of all time.
13super sweet sixteen is TERRIBLE!!!
14don't mind all the other shows though...
It look like there are a lot of TV show about the rich but, as long that is good, who care?
15yes I'm truly tired of all these rich folks and their lives!
16with the exception of "dirty sexy money"- fictional is fine with me and most of the time they're portrayed as puthetic and needy!
17except for the girls next door haha
but yeah... let's put a lil variety in there
18except for the girls next door haha
but yeah... let's put a lil variety in there
19Some of the teens on sweet 16 need to get a rude awakening. See the picture above. I don't want to see that on my tv. I like to see pretty people.
20I love Gossip Girl, but that's about it.
21I love Gossip Girl, and Dirty Sexy Money is ok, but reality shows about bratty rich kids I can't stand.
22I'm more sick of the reality rich people, to tell the truth. They are all annoying and play up to the camera. Not that I want reality TV to turn to a different income bracket. I'd really like reality TV to just slowly die.
23I couldn't care less about any of these shows or the narcissistic boring people they feature. However, I just love the shopping. Give me a show feature shopping and trying on shoes, I'm there.
24I think we love to watch the rich be totally screwed up, there's a special kind of crazy that only the wealthy can manage.
25Who wants to watch a show where they are all perfectly dressed and happy and nothing ever goes wrong?
We want a trainwreck with a little immorality & bad taste thrown in for good measure!
...I'll take the piping hot rich chick with a side order of judgement, pleeze
I don't mind fictional tv shows like 'dirty sexy money' where the characters are wealthy. but i can't stand the spoiled wailing infants on mtv screaming and freaking out about their 16th birthdays or the 'housewives' that are so chronically and painfully sheltered that there skin would crack if they stepped outside the gates of their neighborhood. it's not 'reality'. i don't watch those shows, but i do watch the fictional shows as long as it's interesting.
26I am absolutley sick of all the rich assholes on TV. Putting them on the tube only increases their sence of entitlement. Would Lauren Conrad be anybody without Laguna Beach? No way in hell.
I went to school with bratty spoiled rich kids & don't need to see them on TV. I don't watch any of that trash, but I think the world would be a better place without it
27i think that it's overkill at this point. there are too many shows that are practically the same and it makes you feel like you'll never achieve certain things since these kids have soo much already
28Actually American culture has always had a facination with wealthy families. Before there were celebrities to gossip about, America was obsessed with the lives of the rich families of NYC. I've heard it has somthing to do with us not having royalty to gossip about. I can't remembe where I learned this but it makes sense. Personally, I can't stand that Super Sweet Sixteen show, but I'm not in the demographic. However, if I run into a marathon of Real Housewives of Orange County, oh yeah, I get sucked in!
29Well truthfully, YES...I'm tired of the reality TV shows depicting rich people...but, in the dramas of produced and written tv shows, NO WAY!!! What would I do without the wonderfully underrated show Dirty, Sexy Money or the super entertaining Gossip Girl. At least you can imagine those as the fantasy they are
I think the reality tv shows only go on to glorify the rich and at times make the working middle class feel inadequate, that as hard as they've worked, they will never be able to buy baby girl that Benz or BMW for her Sweet 16. Or that as much as Husband loves Wife, he will never be able to put that Tiffany's diamond on the hands that he loves so much...I'm over it!!!
30I'm with a lot of other people; I think the reality shows are annoying, but I like the fictional ones.
31I dont know how in the WORLD this got called " reality " TV... Reality is a single mother working 2 jobs busting her ass to put her children through school to ensure they have better then her. Reality is War Veterans being given the boot because our government sucks. Thats reality. These stupid rich people are so ignorant and vapid they all need a GOOD dose of " reality"
32These reality show about wealthy people is quite disgusting! I agree with Naidean7 completely! The majority of our nation does not live a rich, full "glamorous" life! I've never been into "reality" TV and seeing a 16 yr old get a new benz while we have so many homeless family and displaced children in this nation makes me want to vomit!
Also, why don't we ever see "reality" shows with wealthy back people?? Are they less facinating??? Just wondering!
33I agree with Tiabia, but I think the flip side of being drip fed this "aspirational" bullsh*t is not that people think "oh, no matter how hard I work I can never but that BMW / that designer handbag / those shoes that cost the same amount as my monthly mortgage etc etc..." it's that people start to think "I must buy that thing" and stick it on their credit card or buy it on credit and get themselves into all kinds of difficulties over things that they never really needed, they simply thought they had to have.

It's fine for regular people to be interested in the lives of the rich and famous, but when they start trying to emulate that lifestyle on a regular income that's when the problems occur.
34Ok- so is it that we love watching rich people act like jerks so we can be happy hating them. . . or is it that we are supposedly admiring them?
Personally, these type of shows usually make me sick. I'm more into retardo-reality (aka Flavor of Love) and shows True Life and Made that show regular people and what their lives are like and what they dream to do. I'll pass on rich girls crying over how daddy got the wrong color Mercedes and it ruined their $500k Sweet Sixteen Party. VOMIT.
35I fully agree with the others who said that the reality tv shows about rich people are no good. I do like Gossip Girl and Dirty Sexy Money though.
36The reality shows I can take or leave to be honest, especially the one we have on MTV UK at the moment The edge or something. But just normal TV shows, don't really bother me.
37I agree Kiki Tee...about people living well ABOVE their means.
I recall one episode of My Super Sweet Sixteen (BARF-A-RAMA) with two Indian sisters. One of the girls picked up a handbag that was only $400.00 and threw it down and said "ewww". I believe that's when I officially lost my cookies with those rich brats...MTV should know better!!!
PS: And what happened to be artastic Bravo!
38I only like "My Super Sweet Sixteen" because the kids are SOOO ridiculous. I especially enjoy the ones where their parents threaten to cancel the party because they are failing classes and the kids don't see anything wrong with that. It shows me how bad parenting can get for some people.
39Never watched any of these shows! Doesnt appeal to me, altho I do see why other people would be fascinated with it.
40I've had my fill since "Dynasty!"
41no more shows on Orange County. the oc, real housewives, laguna beach, newport harbor. ENOUGH ALREADY.
i lived in oc for 6 years, and it's everything they portray it as, but it's tiresome. stop it. thanks.
42One of the reasons Dirty Sexy Money is so compelling, I think, is that it deals with the corrupting influence of wealth. What do these other shows have to contribute, besides making us want what they have or, in the case of Real Housewives, allowing the rich to flaunt their wealth in our faces? Blech. No thanks!
43I hate it and as shallow and selfish as they come across, I don't think they can see it. These people think their lives are normal! Real people don't live like that.
44I love DSM and Gossip Girl, but "real life" rich people television shows get on my nerves. I guess partially because I think reality TV is mostly a waste of time.
45If the shows are "reality" I love the Housewife's of the OC on Bravo. Seriously it is unbelievable how delusional 3 of those women are... it is so worth the time to watch. But I hated the new one in NYC. Simply cause there is nothing remotely likable about any of those wife's.
But that Sweet Sixteen show on MTV I can't take.
Now speaking of TV scripted shows like Dirty Sexy Money, Brothers and Sisters are all good shows.
46i dont' mind the scripted shows- like gossip girl- but i hate the reality shows- my super sweet 16 or whatever it is? i've never seen a bigger bunch of spoiled brats in my life. the real housewives? puh-lease. money doesn't buy class!
